My Cycle and PPD

I went on an anti-depressant 6.5 weeks ago, and found that I feel like myself again. However when I had my first cycle I felt like I did prior to the meds. I hate to make an appointment with my doc to discuss this, so i was wondering if anyone who experienced PPD and PPA, had similar experiences during their PMS or cycle.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

First, thank you to everyone that left me a response! I cannot tell you how much that meant to me! As for how I'm feeling, I hit my low like I have before, however this time it did not end and it is worse than before. I'm asking my doctor to increase my dosage next week. Because I felt like I was back to myself with only a couple of days of lows, I took on more than I could handle in school. This is the reason I believe I had a drastic backslide in my recovery. I have to remember that even though I feel like myself, I'm not completely healed-and that is hard to accept!!

I had put on my profile the desire to conceive again in the spring. Again, I thought that I was back to normal, however this recent experience has made me realize that I'm not 100%. So I decided I'm NOT ready for another baby. Why make it harder for myself than it already is? My husband is a little disappointed, but he rather me take care of myself.

Thanks again to everyone for their support...it's SO good to know that I have fellow sisters lifting me up!

Like you, I am on currently on antidepressants and definitely feel as though my progress in overcoming PPD occasionally takes a backslide during PMS (in fact, more often than not). Certainly, hormonal fluctuations make a difference. Do your best to maintain some perspective during your cycles, remembering that occasional PPD regressions will occur, but will usually only last a few days; overall, you should continue to improve and eventually overcome PPD. However, you may also want to check with your doctor to discuss other anti-depressant medications. Perhaps you will see less drastic fluctuations in your mood and PPD symptoms on a different medication (or combination of medications).

This site is webmd.com you can look up all types of different medically advice with it. This would include medicines, just type in the anti-depressant your on in the spot that says "find a drug". Hopefully it will give you some idea of what side effects come along with the meds.

I'm taking two anti-depressants for PPD and have never had any problems before or during my cycle. I feel great since my doctor added the second anti-depressant! I would definitely talk to your doctor. I still wasn't feeling just right on the one anti-deppressant and I discussed with my doctor and we decided to try adding the second one and it has worked great for me. It can't hurt to talk to your doctor.

i also suffered from ppd, which turned into cronic depression. it's not an easy road to be on. i guess that doesn't help you much. i really wanted to say that my daughters are 2 and 1, though i wouldn't trade them for the world, i think you should wait to have another one for awhile. it's draining trying to raise two kids that young.

you and i are very similar. i've been on meds for 4 months now. and, i did have severe symptoms with my first couple cycles after i started. i believe this has lessened the longer i've been on the medication; although, to be honest, i still have up and down days regardless. it is true that the medication does take awhile to "regulate", so don't give up hope. have you been in touch with the ppd support group in the area? if not, it is a WONDERFUL resource. the support coordinator, birdie, makes herself completely available via the phone or email, has an immense amount of knowledge and will stay on with you until she knows she has answered your question and you are comfortable with it. her contact info is: ###-###-#### (work phone) or ____@____.com. i give you all this b/c i know what it's like to want a simple question answered by someone who knows what they're talking about and not having to go thru a phone call to a nurse, dr, make an appt, and have to wait for it to all get accomplished. good luck and let me know if you need additional help...

I had PPD after I had my son...I lost so much weight I was unhealthy, I could barely function because I felt so sleepy, and it affected me in terms of bonding with my son. I also had more painful cycles after I gave birth...apparently I now have some vericose veins in my uterus after being pregnant. SO, I started and anti-depressant and I started taking a BC pill to help me skip my period and it helped tremendously. There seems to be no health risk noted from skipping your period so far except occasional irregular bleeding. I think not having the pain from my cycles and also having my hormones regulated by the pill helped me not to feel as bad and helped ease my PPD so that I no longer take an anti-depressant. Perhaps this could be an option for you to consider until you are ready to conceive again...or it just might take a little more time for you body to re-regulate naturally. Best wishes!
