I have always heard to rub Vicks vaporub on their feet before bed and put socks on - on their chest also, but for some reason putting this on their feet seems to work?!

we got night lights in the pharmacy section that double as waterless vaporizers- releasing the scents of eucalyptus, chamomile and lavender into the air. it definitely helped. i almost can't wait to get a cough after reading all your answers about the vapor rub on the feet thing- i totally want to try it!! my neighbor just told me about that last time my babies got a cough, but i just figured someone made it up!

Believe it or not, rub a very small amount of vicks vapor rub on their feet and put some socks on them. This should help with the cough in about 5 minutes. The oils absorb into the foot and help ease the cough. It works on adults as well. Good luck.

Have you taken him to the DR yet to know that it is just a cough due to a cold?

You can use a humidifier or a vaporiser (my choice) or try vicks greaseless rub. Just a small dab on his chest because it is very strong!!!

Hi M.,

Vick's Vapor Rub does work on the feet for a cough if it is a cough because he's sick. (Make sure he can't get it on his hands because it would be dangerous if he got it in his eyes.)In your request, you didn't say if he was a little under the weather or if this was a chronic cough.

If it is chronic then there is a stimuli that needs to be removed from the house. Have you detoxed to see if it has gotten better? Chemicals in the home are not just a leading cause of death because of ingestion but the MOST common cause for asthma, ADD, ADHD and other neurological disorders.

If it's just lingering I'd be glad to talk to you. Detoxing the home is a very simple, inexpensive thing to do if you have the right information. I'd be glad to help!

Regards,

M.

You can put essential oils in the room - like peppermint, eucalyptus, etc. - they can be burned in a special unit to itself, in a ceramic ring around the top of a light bulb or you can mix with some hot water on the stove and then bring the pot into the room. Of course any of these methods you would do while you are in the room and then remove the dangerous items when you leave. Running a vaporizer or cool mist humidifier helps. You can pour essential oils into certain vaporizers that have a place for it, or you can also use liquid vicks there.

If it gets really bad - take the baby into the bathroom with you and run the water as hot as you can (you sit on the toilet and hold the baby with shower curtain or door pulled back slightly) so baby can breath in the moisture. On cold nights like right now, you can bundle baby up and take outside to breathe the cold air for about 10 minutes at a time.

I used vicks, but cautiously - on the feet or lightly on chest is good under those sleepers but at this age not with socks - might pull off the socks and you definitely do not want the baby to get any of that in eyes, nose, or mouth.

I am a mother of 4 and I have always used adult vicks vapor rub on the bottom of their feet and covered them with socks during the night. It works well but make sure it is only a cough and not something more serious. My pediatrician is fine with me doing this b/c infants can no longer use cough suppressants. Good luck!

It sounded weird to me, but my coworker swears that it works for coughing (adults and children). Put Vick's Vapor Rub on the childs feet and put socks on over it. My daughter has not had a cough, so I've not tried this yet. If you do try, provide some feedback...I'd love to know if it really works.

I am scared of all of those over the counter meds now and my pediatrician says you shouldn't suppress it too much. But we like to use vick's vapor rub and you can get the Vick's vapor humidifier now too. I really think it works better than any medicine i have tried in the past for my 2 year old. The last cold he got I only used Vick's and it worked very well. Try putting Vick's on your baby's feet at night along with a pair of socks. Hope this helps!

I have tried the Vicks Baby Rub on my 2yr old son and 4yr old daughter and it works! I rub the bottom of there feet with the vicks and cover with socks at night, then the next morning I remove the socks and wipe the vicks off. I'm glad I tried it!

My son was born in Mexico and I learnt to rely on some rather odd healing practices. Try slicing a raw onion and placing the slices in an open tuperware/bowl underneath the bed or at the head of the bed. It isn't nearly as stinky as it may seem. My son is now 7 and asks for me to put an onion under his bed when he is congested or has a cough. Good Luck!

Well...
you could take child to the doctor. Try putting a humidifier in the room
But, if you are sure it's just a cough and not a cold you can give over the counter cough syrup (traiminic is usually the recommended). Since child is under 2, look at dosage for 2 year old and give between 1/4-1/2 of that dosage. When I say between .25 and .5 of dosage I mean look on syringe or cup that comes with med and fill it until it's between the .25 and .5 lines.
