My 7-Year Old's Stomach Pain

My 7 year old daughter has constant stomach pain for the past month. I've taken her to the pediatrician to whom I'm explained... She has decreased appetite, after she does eat she get bad stomach pain (she describes pressure like a balloon is gonna pop), the pain gets worse towards the end of the day even if she has not eaten. By dinner time, she does not even want to eat. She is not constipated. The pain is not in her bowls, it is in the area from her rib cage to about 3 inches down, sometimes worse on her left side. It does not matter the type of food, removing dairy does not help. The pediatrician advised us to take Pepcid AC until her blood tests come back in 2 weeks. That was 2 days ago. She's in tears by late afternoon with cramping... am I wrong in wanting to demand faster results from the doctor? Any other moms ever experience these same symptoms in their children?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I did take her to the ER shortly after I posted... It was good to hear all of your suggestions and possibilities. My pediatrician did come through for us getting most of the blood work back from the lab ASAP... but it was conclusive. We then went the fast route... ER... to get some answers quicker. Additional blood tests were performed (my pedo sent the others to ER) and all still came back without any answers. Both recommend getting her into a GI doc, which we are currently pursuing. Good to have peace of mind that it is not her gall bladder, liver, or infection.

What is your daughter eating? If the pain comes after she eats, it sounds like what she's eating may not agree with her. Does she eat processed food?(anything out of a box). Does she eat a lot of pasta and bread. She could have a gluten sensitivity. I have seen this manifest itself in many ways...i.e.- abdominal cramping, nausea, constipation, skin rashes, ringing in ears. Gluten is the protein in wheat, barley, rye and sometimes oats. She can be tested for what is called "Celiac"(see-lee-ak). I am a Certified Health Counselor and have had many clients with gluten issues, myself included, so if you need support or have any questions feel free to contact me. www.kimmohr.com

My decision would be to take her to a new pediatrician. Two weeks seems like a long time to watch a child in pain. I would recommend Health Point Peds, on Parsons Ave. Brandon. Dr. Mook Sang or Dr. Julie Dekle. I really haven't seen a doctor that I didn't like there. All my kids went there and now about 10 of my grandchildren go there. I never like to see little ones in pain. Hope you can get some quicker help. Our neighbor some years ago had a problem with her little guy. He had a hernia around his navel and it was telescoping back into his intestines.

I would immediately make an appt with a GI specialist to have tests done to determine what is causing this pain. It is certainly not exaggerated or made-up if she isn't eating, so I would get to the bottom of it ASAP. I don't remember the exact symptoms, but I know both my gall bladder and apendix caused me great abdominal pain, and I had my appendix removed at her age.

If you can't get in ASAP to a specialist, I would go straight to the ER....

Also, consider a new pediatrician that is more attentive to your daughters condition and needs.

I would take her to the ER, they will do all the work up there and have results for you plus get a specalist if needed. If you can i would take her to All Children's in saint petersburg, they are the best, which side is this hurting her, this could be anything, i would not wait. I would take her as soon as she starts to complain, make a list of all meds that she is on and what the symptoms are. Please keep us posted. My daughter went through this and she was completely backed up and they had to flush her out which she stayed a couple of days in the hospital. she is fine now.

I have a 7 year old whose stomach hurts a lot, often after eating. At least once a month he's got blood in his stool (fresh blood). It's been going on at least a year and a half, maybe more. We've had blood work done, xrays, changed his diet, tested for allergies... via pediatrician, peds GI specialist and ER. the one thing we haven't done is full (and fully sedated) colonoscopy--I worry about the anesthetic, and I'm unclear about the benefit vs the risk (seems like they're just suggesting in lieu of doing more legwork, but I could be wrong). I would love thoughts on the next steps, or similar cases.

D.,

I agree with a lot of the mom's I would take her to the ER now ,today. I would not wait any longer! It's always better to get results now instead of waiting! You know if there is something the matter with your little one.Good Luck and I hope she is OK soon.

Hi D.,

I would like to highly recommend an excellent nutrionist - Dr. Susan Player - in the Clearwater area (I believe her website is DrPlayer.com). She does muscle testing that exactly locates the source of distress and finds the appropriate solution.

I once had a great discomfort like this - turned out my stomach was shoved up under my ribcage and with an adjustment from a chiro/nutritionist it was all better. I love natural solutions that work so well, so I'm recommending her to you. :)

I would take her to the ER. I had a cousin once that had a hernia, and the child complained just like that. It wasn't from over extending themselves (as most adults get hernias). Sometimes I was told it is just biological. Either way the ER will give you immediate answers and either can start treating her or put your mind at ease.
