My 6 Month Old Teething...

I was wondering if it was normal for children to get diarrhea and not eat when they are teething. My son had 7 dirty diapers yesterday, most of them were more liquid poots than a real messy diaper. I can't get him to eat his bottle either. He will just pick at it and not finish it then want another one in 2 hours. My daughter never did anything like this while she was teething, so I was wondering if this was a normal behavior because I understand every child is different in their own way. Thanks for all your help in advance!

Hi R....no, it's not normal for children to get diarrhea when they're teething. I bet your sweet little guy does have a "stomach bug".

This is what's considered to be normal during the teething stage: http://www.ada.org/public/topics/teething.asp

I hope he's feeling better very soon!

Hi R.,
My baby girl is 5 months and has been drooling like crazy for two months. She has also from time to time done the same thing you describe as far as not being able to finish feeding. I guess her gums are bothering her too much. I was told about Hylands teething tablets and they work wonderfully. She even likes them too. We tried baby Orajel and she hated it. She has not had any diarrhea although I've been told by several more experienced parents that it is very common when teething.

My son did the same thing when he was 5 1/2 months. He is now 8 months old. We had just flown to FL and as soon as we landed it started, he had diarrhea for about 5 days (the whole time we were in FL) and ran a small fever. As soon as we got back home he was fine and had cut his 1st tooth a day later. So I do think this happens to some children, my doc said to not worry about the diarrhea just give him some Pedialyte (si) and it could last a week or so. Good luck, you may see a tooth soon.

Although it is somewhat normal for looser stools during teething due to swallowing lots more saliva etc, and to not want to take a bottle as often, because it hurts to suck at times, it sounds like your little guy may have found himself a little stomach bug. I would try to lay off of the formula a abit, and give him pedialyte instead for a bit. We personally like the Gerber liqui-lyte (I think that is what its called), and they even come in small bottles, so you dont waste as much. Just let his belly settle alittle, and then start adding formula back in. That is just my advice, good luck! ~A.~

A girlfriend of mine said that her child would spend a day with non stop diarrhea and the next day literally she would see the tooth cutting through.
My child pooped more often than usual but not diarrhea and got diaper rash and would not drink hardly anything until the tooth cut through. The Dr said that she may want a bottle but then the nipple or sucking would bother her and she would quit but would still be hungry and would want to try again later only to go through the samem thing.
