I have noticed that my son has a smaller vocabulary than kids his age. He just turned 4. I also have realized that he may not be comprehending things well. I figure that a 4 year old should be able to to understand things pretty well. Am I just expecting too much from him?
Does any one know a place that does educational assessments on children? I live in the east Detroit area. Thank you for your help.

Talk to your son's pediatrician. The doctor may be able to refer you to a specialist who can determine whether or not your son really is speech delayed. Good luck!

What county do you live in? I would suggest calling your local school district. I believe that from birth to the age of 3 the Intermediate School District for your county does the educational assessments and over the age of 3 the local school district does them. Good luck!

Wayne State University Psychology Clinic does assessments on children ###-###-####) and they also share space with the University's Speech and Language Pathology department who might be able to provide services. Typically the clinic has wait list as the they do not take insurance, instead services are provided on an ability to pay sliding scale.

Good luck

Your school district should be able to do that for free. Contact the special education office and ask for a preschool evaluation.

Hello ~ always follow your intuitions. My son (who just turned 4 last weekend) had a ton of ear infections and tubes 2 times and his speech was affected. His pediatrician recommended I contact the school district and my school district had a great/special preschool program that has helped his speech tremendously over the last year and since it is through the schools it is free and they have a speech pathologist and free testing, it has been a great experience. Have you talked with your pediatrician? I would suggest start there, but also contact your school district to see what they offer.

Good luck ~
