My 3 year old daughter can not talk yet. When she was younger she needed tubes in her ears and we did that last year and then all of a sudden she had a really bad ear infection in her left ear. I mean it was real bad that it was bleeding and the outside of her ear was infected also. Well her tube came out and now its like she can't hear very good I have gotten her tested and everything seems to be okay. I mean she can say aom words but not alot. I have also put in article in her about her potty training and i'm wondering since she has this problem if that why i can't get her potty trained.I would like to know if there is any other mothers out there that have the same problem.

What can I do next?

My son had tubes in his ears also. But we caught his in time I think. He's two & he repeats just about everything I say. However, my aunt wasn't so lucky w/her son. He has had so many ear infections & tubes in his ears. It has caused major problems in his speech & hearing. My suggestion would be to get her tested again, maybe at another facility. It never hurts to get a second opinion. When it comes to something this important I'd rather be safe then sorry. She may have to get help w/her speech. I'm no doctor so that is all I can offer. Hope this helps & try to keep your head up!

I also have a 3 y/o with the same type of ear problems..WE are on tube set #3..SHe is just starting to talk some..not many sentances but with private speech and speech through the school system it is showing improvments..I never thought about the potty training issue and speach but I am definately in the same boat..She is seeing a physical therapist that thinks she has low muscle tone which contributes to speach issue and potty control..She will be great some times and totally mess up others..Best of luck to us both

WOW poor girl!!! My son had bad ear infections also he never needed tubes but alot of the ear infections went on without my knowledge I dont know if i was just young and stupid or if he was just that tough that he dealt with them but I never really noticed him having alot of problems with his ears but he was a VERY VERY late talker... he would jibber jabber words but you could only make out a couple of words til he was around 3 yrs of age... they wanted to put him in speech therapy thru an early childhood program I refused it but he eventually got better I think you really have to work with them when they have not been able to hear for so long because they have heard things SO different than what they are. My son is now 7 yrs old and you would NEVER know he ever had any problems talking he runs his mouth constantly and hes in gifted and talented classes he does have a very slight speech impentament but its not terrible and the drs have said in time it will probabaly go away... if you are really really concerned about it ask your pediatrician they can surely give you some advice on where to seek help for her... and Good luck!!!

My son just turned 4 in September and he is still a little slow on his talking. Like you I have had him tested and he saw a speech therapist for almost a year. I would sugest calling the Brighton School. They help single moms like ourselves. Just let them know what's going on with you daughter and they can recommend an outlet for you. Or it could be she's a late bloomer.

my son was and still is like that. he had real bad ear infections, and we did tubes at age 3. he tubes fell out about 2 yrs later. but he has always had a speech delay, i would suggest getting her in to some speech therapy. my son is now in kindergarden for the second time, and he has to go to resource class. if your ins. won't pay for speech therapy, go to your local school. they have resources to help get therapy. also i do believe it will delay in potty training, atleast it did for him. it took us almost a yr to get it really good. he was almost 4 before he really was good. i think its b/c they can't understand whats being said to them, and they don't know how to tell us what they are feeling. hope this helps you.

my five year old son still doesn't talk alot. he know his abc, how to count to 100 by 5 and tens, he know his colors, shapes, ect and is beginning to read but he has an older brother(7) who answers all his questions and talks for him. i have to make an effort to MAKE him talk and ask questions. but since starting kinder he has begun to blossom. try making her say and explain everything herself. always ask why or for details. and tell the older sib to please be quiet and listen. read books togther and ask for details.just talk about what interest her and ask questions. as for potty training find something important to her. my son didn't want to take off his batman costume (and yes i let him wear it everyday)and cried when it had to be washed. so i used that. example-"oh you better go potty or batman might get dirty" it worked for him in two days

I worked in a child learning center for a while. We had some children that were like your daughter. They were 2-3 and some even 4 y/o that they barely spoke & what they did sometimes you couldn't understand them, We had alot of trouble potty training some of them etc. But all in all they were smart children they just had some developmental delays.
We learned of some programs Easter Seals that help the children (For FREE) and when we recommended the program to the parents they were happy. The Speech therapist came to the center (or whereever) to make it easier for the parents & worked with the children. The progress isn't instant but I saw how it worked with the children

The website (if you want to check it out is....

I hope this helps...

in my language and cognitive development class we were just discussing how the little problem with a young childs ears can set them back so far in their language development! so between the bad ear infections and the tubes im sure she lost some valuable time but it doesnt mean it will last!!! every single chance talk to her as her questions conversations and read!! also talk to her ent and find a speech therapists which can help her progess more rapidly! good luck!!! and by the way my son is almsot three he talks but he still has pronoucation problems and after talking to a speech teacher at my school i to field work at and her observing him she said that he tries to talk at the speed we are talking causing him to blur his words together! as for potty training just kept the potty chair vigilant and talk to her about its use dont force her let her go at her own pace and if she is behind in her language development due to her ear problems her physical and cognitive development can be slowed because in young children the language and cognitive development progress together if one is out of sync the other will start to slow, not bad just let her take her time!!!

When myson was little he had the same problems that your are saying about your little girl. My son had a set of tubes and they ended collapsing in his ear and then they had to put in another set and since all that he has a little hearing loss but not enough to worry about. He did start to walk late and talk late and potty train late. I don't know exactly why he did it but I think it was cause his ears were always infected and hurting and something about the equalibrium or something like that. Anyways, I got him into speech therapy and they came to my house he improved on talking a whole lot. I would talk to her doctor about her talking and tell him that you would like a referral for a speech therapist appointment. But don't worry she will be just fine. My son still has a little bit of problems with some words but we are still working on it and he is in the first grade with all normal kids and he is keeping up so I wouldn't worry.

My story is very same to the last mom. My son started with a speech delay. We started him with the ECI program and boy did it help. Then they helped me get him into a program through the schools and he went half day for 2 years and that helped alot too. He too is in his 2nd year in kindergarten but only because of behavoir. He now has no speech problems at all. However I don't know if his whining today is as a result of his speech delay because when he couldn't comunicate he whined and so now he has to learn that he has words now and to use them appropriatly. He now talks and talks and talks. Best of luck and keep me informed. If you need any more info let me know.

I would take the child to her ENT and bring the issue up. I myself was a child with tubes and sometimes I can not hear what so ever! What you may end up doing is once the hearing issue is addressed take her to a speech specialist. That worked very well with me. My parents also got me into groups with other hearing impaired kids wqhere I could socialize with other people who knew i had to be looking at them for them to speak.
The key is to get her to a doctor ASAP and address this issue. A child who gets tubes before the age of 5 has serious problems that need to be corrected and if they arent her language skills will suffer.
I hope everything gets better for you guys!

have you talked to the doctor about her not talking yet? what did he say? if you haven't, talk to him and see what he says. my opinion. it's like your daughter is just being born as far as her hearing goes. she just started hearing everything the way it should be so she could just need time. her ears are like the ears of a brand new baby. just teach her like you're teaching her everything for the first time. and potty training... what have you tried?

My son had the same problem. He was 2 and a half and the only words he said were Momma and Daddy. We put him in private speech therapy and switched his daycare to one that promised to work with him individually. His first speech meeting was on a Monday afternoon after daycare...and by that Friday, we were seeing MAJOR improvement. In under a month, people were asking me if it was the same child!

I see you live in Lubbock so I have no idea who to refer you to there. ECI is a program you can get the number for through your local school district and maybe the local WIC office or Dept of Human Resources. They are specifically set up to intervene in early childhood delays. Your daughter may also qualify for Head STart if there is one in your community. You should also talk to your pedi and get a referral to a pediatric speech therapist for an eval and possible therapy. Even if your kids are on Medicaid they will cover it if she has a demonstrated need. You also need to get a second opinion on her hearing eval. If they are telling you all is well she should be talking more by now unless you are enabling her to NOT communicate by meeting her needs when she motions for something or mumbles something. If you have an older child this could be very possible. Second and later children usually develop speech later due to this. The older sibling sees the baby look at the bottle so the good big brother gives baby the milk before the baby cries. They are only trying to be helpful but it does delay baby's development.
Let me know if I can help with anything else.
