I need to know what to do. My son is 2 years old and has been having fevers off and on for months. I have taken him to his doctor and all they ever say is it is viral. I give him everything i can for fevers they go down a little bit but keep going back up. I have gave him allergy meds and cold and flu. Nothing is working and I want to know whats wrong. I have found out that black mold is in my apt and trying to get the landlord to fix it. I have told his doctor and all he said was it is viral. I asked for him to do blood work to see if its the mold but they wont. What do I do he just does not get better?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

So I took him to another doctor. But they could not see him cause i have med. and his doctor would not give the other doctor permition. So i brought him back to the old doc. They took a boold count and said it is the ear infection again. lol i am sick of hearing it and they want to see him tomorrow at 230. I know there is something wrong i know my child as we all do. I am calling more places up and fixing this problem asap. I am so stressed and sick of a doc not doing there job. Then the nurses had balls to say there is no way he has a tep that high she must not be giving him anything. So they tryed and say i was a bad mom. I mean really what mom would not give there child med. to bring the fever down. I was hot i flipped on them and walked out. I will be driving out of my town for a better doc. I t is worth the drive to make sure he is ok. I just still dont see a ear infection bringing him that high and he still get the fevers when the ear infection is gone. I will update you all tomorrow again. Thank you for helping and praying .

Dr. Greene has a very good article on fevers at http://www.drgreene.com/qa/fevers The second page is where he talks about what to do, but the first page has great information about how high a fever has to be to cause any damage.

You need to have him tested for strep. My twin girls did this several years ago where they would have high fever every couple of weeks, Finally a Dr did a strep test and it was positive. Not sure if the mold could be causing it but I would insist to my Dr to find the cause and if he refuses then go to another one or even a walk-in place.

Your doctor should never refuse a request like that. If you feel he needs testing done, then it should be done. I would find a new doctor.

I would caution on the medication though, as it doesn't seem to take it out anyway... I'd really watch out because at 2 yrs. his little body can only process so much.

I treat fevers with a low dose of tylenol and a hot bath, fewer clothes after the bath and lots of fluids. Its hard to watch them run a fever and feel uncomfortable, but remember that fevers are the body's way of killing foreign contaminants. I'd let him run a fever up to 103, then dose it down to 100 and leave it alone.

But find another doctor! Get some testing done, and find one who is as concerned as you are. Any doctor that writes you off like that is not a good doctor.

Best of luck to you and your little guy!

I would take him to a new doctor right away. Be sure to tell them how high his fever has been and for how long. I have been told that a high fever itself does not cause brain damage but that some infections that cause high fevers can also cause damage if left untreated. My son had multiple ear infections but the fever was never over 103 with them. If that doctor told you it was viral after he has been sick for that long without even doing a finger prick blood test to determine whether it is really viral or bacterial, he has been very negligent! Most viruses are gone within 10 days. You need a competent doctor.

HI N.,

If your home has black mold get out of it. I'd sleep in a refrigerator box before I would stay there. It is terribly, terribly dangerous. Your child may have an ear infection but you can only get an infection of any kind if the immune system isn't working right. Black mold tears an immune system up and dealing with a compromised immune system can open up a whole lot of other things.

God bless!

You need to find a different doctor. I would even suggest maybe taking him to a naturopath who can also do blood work if you can't find a doctor who will listen to your concerns.

What other symptoms does he have besides fever? And how high does it go? And how often? 98.6* is only an 'average' temperature. Some people normally have a higher or lower temp (my husband's is lower. If his reaches 'normal', he actually has a fever).

Keep fighting the landlord about the mold, and maybe get (or have the landlord provide) a de-humidifier to take out moisture or an air cleaner or ozonizer to purify the air. Call the Health Department (or whoever) to see what your rights are in this issue. (If the Health Dept. doesn't handle this, they can probably tell you who does).

P.S. I just read your 'so what happened' post. Where you take the temp makes a difference in how high it is. Rectal temps are higher while under the arm are lower. Orally is the avg (in between) -- as long as they haven't eaten or drunk anything hot or cold recently.

I would be looking for another doctor. When my son was 4 months old my son had fever as well and he didn't want to eat. He was doing a lot of coughing and I couldn't find a doctor that would help me. All the doctors would tell me I'm an overprotected Mom. I thought if I heard that one more time I would go postal. I knew there was something wrong; I don't have a PH.D at the end of my name but I knew my child and I'm not stupid. I finally found a doctor that did an X-Ray and found that he had a upper respiratory infection. He was put in the hospital under a tent for 3 days and was released on Christmas Day. It took me two months to find a doctor that would help. He cleared up and got much better after that. So it pays to be persistant. Good luck!!!

Another thing you can do for your child when the fevers get that high is to put cool wet wash clothes under his arms, in between his legs, around his neck and across his forehead. This helps bring the fever down if you cool him down at all the sweat gland areas. I know some people put their child in the a cool bath but being smail it's easier to use wash clothes and therefore you don't have to move them.

Sounds like you think the fevers are related to the mold. Could be. I don't know. However, we had issues with our youngest child running very high fevers with no other symptoms from the time she was about the time she 1 until right after she turned 2. We took her to the doctor and they said it was viral, her ears, throat, etc., were fine. A few times, I think the doctor gave us antibiotics just to appease us.

One day she had been running a fever of 103 and said, "it hurts to pee." She ended up having a UTI and in the long run, Grade II Urninary Reflux. All of this was the reason for the unexplained fevers in the past. Her bouts with the fevers were most likely always UTI.

Since your doctor doesn't seem to want to check the blood, you might want to seek a second opinion. Also, in all of that, maybe request a urine test as well. If your apartment has black mold, please find somewhere else to stay. Good luck, hope you find the answer soon and that your baby feels better.

some docs believe that a temp of about 101.2 and 97.8 are normal. You didnt specify the temps sometimes even higher. I went to the ER on base here and they said a fever wasnt serious until it was 107!! I am not sure about that but that can be the problem when dealing with different docs os that they ALL have different opinions. I hope you get it all figured out soon enough.

I found this website and I just want to make sure that your landlord wont pour bleach on it and call it good. Even when the mold is dead it can still cause problems. Make sure that everything gets replaced. Good luck and I hope that you guys can figure out whats wrong with your little man!
