MY 2 year old had a barium enema done 3 days ago and hasn't had a bm since.
I don't know if this is normal or not. She has had and issue with constipation almost her whole life.
I thought we had it under control until the other day when she had extreme lower stomach pain
so I took her to the hospital where they did an ex ray on her and found she had a mass in her colon
so they sent us to a childrens hospital to do more test they gave her MiraLax and suppositories to help her "go"
She passed some but then they did a barium enema and found she was just constipated.
So they sent us home now it's been almost three days and she hasn't had a BM!!!! Is this something i should be worried about
It's the weekend so i couldn't get a hold of her doctor and i don't want to take her to the ER again
the GI doctor put her on The MiraLax and chocolate laxatives we started them the day after we got home (i kno but we were completely broke) she still hasn't has a BM and the MiraLax seems to make her stomach upset and she threw up twice after giving her some I don't know what else to do??

What can I do next?

That barium needs to be passed out of her system. If she was constipated before she's most likely really plugged up now. If you are giving her MiraLax and the laxatives and she's not pooping up a storm there is a problem. Contact the doctor, call their after hours number, they have got to have one, doctors can't just leave people hanging because it's Saturday.

Good Luck,

M.

I cannot answer your question. I'm so sorrry about your daughter's problem. However, I want to tell you what my mother did years ago for my sister that I truly believe saved her life.

My sister has a problem like your daughter's. It is so bad that she was in the hospital for it several times, once so bad that they thought the blockage would necessitate colon surgery. My mom is a really practical minded woman. She had no guidance from the doctors, but tried this on her own and it worked.

No processed foods. Very little meat. Lots of vegetables and fruits, beans and other protein substitutes. No refined sugar. No white bread products. Prunes every morning.

If my sister strays from this diet, she becomes constipated. Constipation for her will end up in a hospital visit. There is too much at stake for her to stray from this diet.

I urge you to consider doing this. I know it's more expensive to eat this way. You actually have to figure out, kind of like vegetarians, how to get a balanced diet without much meat. You have to be more creative in the kitchen too. But I promise you that if this works (and I truly believe that it will), that your daughter will feel SO much better that she will want to work with you to eat like this. Please try it.

I would take her back to Children's or at least Urgent Care. And if you do not know the after hours number to call to reach someone, find out immediately. If that means you call this other Urgent Care office because your pediatrician has no one on call, that's fine, but you should be able to reach someone for advice. Did Children's discharge you with papers? They should have, and on those papers should have been a number to call if you needed help. This not a question for laypeople like ourselves. You need urgent medical advice.

This definitely sounds like a medical question for a medical professional, I don't believe there are any on this site.

I am sure that your pediatrician has a Dr. On call. If you call their office e you should get an answering service who can then have the Dr. On call call you back. If your pediatrician's office does not have a Dr. On call find a new pediatrician.

She was completely totally emptied out correct? It takes a few days for our body to digest our food and then as it passes through the lower parts even more is used up until the feces is all that is left. So she may not have eaten enough to make more pooh yet.

Try really hard to find a way to get her meds for her okay? Our girl and boy both have IBS with chronic constipation. I have it too but with chronic Diarrhea. If they miss even one day of the Mirilax it can cause them to start another chunk then they have to start the massive stuff all over. We've had to start keeping Koolaid made up just to put the med in since they're both taking it up to 4 times per day for 4 days then going back to once per day when they're cleaned out. Those large poohs that pass after these blocks can be painful even with all the meds and stuff.

I hate they have to go through all this.

Call doc now! She can get into big trouble because the barium turns to cement.

My daughter at one point was completely blocked: her colon was filled with hardened stool and every time she ate something she would be nauseous since the food could only barely pass into her intestines since the other end (colon) was blocked. Her BM's consisted of pellets that would break off the end because the log was too large. She was put on a clean out routine that was similar to a colonoscopy clean out: She drank a bottle of the magnesium citrate saline laxative (looks like a soda bottle) in the AM and again several hours later (or she could have taken 3 full doses of Miralax several hours apart). It took a few hours to take hold and then she spent the next few hours going to the bathroom almost every hour. Since she was so fully blocked the doctor recommended she do the same routine a second day until her BM's consisted of liquid. After that she was able to eat normally but needed to be on the full dose (capful) of Miralax daily for about 6 months. The doctor advised that the length of time to stay on the full dose is twice as long as it took to get constipated (my daughter's happened over the summer when she simply was not drinking enough and she was old enough that I was not longer monitoring her BM's). Once normal stools (soft hot dog shapes, not pellets or chunks and not diarrhea either) are achieved regularly she recommended we wean off the Miralax by reducing the dose every 3 months by half, unless the stools hardened again.
So the vomiting is concerning since that might indicates she is still blocked. The lack of BM by itself for a day or 2 after being completely cleaned out is not an issue on its own, since the food remains in the colon where your body absorbs most of its liquid from food and compacts the mush that your intestines create into stool.
I would not wait and call the doctor about the vomiting and explain the blockage issue. Good luck.
