My 13 Month Old Has Had Diarrhea for 3 Weeks Please Help

Take him back to a doctor, maybe not the same doctor, but he can weaken and die from dehydration and malnutrition if the diarrhea isn't brought under contgrol. It's not just a bug if it lasts this long. Please get help. He may be allergic to something he ate, or he may be reacting to some medicine the doctor prescribed. He needs help, quickly. I would go to the Emergency Room, especially since there is blood in the stool, even though it may be just from his anus since he's irritated. None of this is a good sign.

Is he drinking milk? This is a symptom of milk allergy. It could also be an allergy to soy. A lot of people who are allergic to milk are also allergic to soy.

With blood in the stool, get him to Dr. again. IF they won't see him, go to the hospital. It may be a bug. But for 3 weeks!!! The normal bacterial in his gut may be messed up. You can try yogart or Culturelle, which is a probiotic, most pharmacies & Publix should have it.

Make sure he gets plenty of fluids- pedialyte or gatorade (dilute).

stool check should be done.

Yes he may need to see a pediatric gastroenterologist, depending on results of other test.

My son had diarrhea a lot around 13mos. ( up to six times a day) and it sometimes had blood in it as well. After three phone calls to the nurse (who kept saying it was a hemorrhoid that had let go which we now know never happens to toddlers) and two visits to the Ped. We had a Pediatric Gastroenterologist get involved. We treated my son for a milk allergy until he was 22 mos. and still he had blood and diarrhea, because the blood tests for allergies on kids so young can be false positive or negative. So finally we had to do a sigmoidoscopy and we found out that he had Irritable Bowel Disease/Ulcerative Colitis. All that time he had poor weight gain and really didn't eat solid foods very well. Now he's medicated and growing. Don't let this go very long without getting a blood test and OR a specialist involved. No one should have blood in their stool for weeks. Something is going on.

Since your doctor is a flake, take him to the ER where they will run the necessary blood and stool samples to diagnose exactly what he has. 3 weeks is too long - he needs to be diagnosed. He is dehydrating.

When my child was 2, she became terribly sick (kidney infection) and the doctor kept telling me it was a local bug....too lazy to even take a simple test! 4 times i took her in a week with 105 temp and kept being sent home. The infection finally caused alot of internal damage to her organs and now at 13 she has heart issues and adrneal problems that will haunt her the rest of her life. One night back then, I also thoufght about taking her to the hospital- but my husband said no- let her pedi deal with it. It was the worst mistake I ever made and I wish I could go back a nd do it over again.

The blood is probably from straining but do have it checked out.

Call your pediatrician's after hours line now and get the docs opinion. I use my advice line a lot, they can help you the best in these kind of situations. Keep calling them until you get hold of someone. Hopefully they are like mine and always pick up. If it were mine and he had blood in his stool, I'd take him in tonight if the doctor doesn't get back to you in an hour or so. Hope he feels better soon!

Get him off all milk products and allow his body time to heal. Keep well hydrated with lots of water. Next have his nervous system checked for nerve disturbance to the nerves that control digestion and healing. This is caused by subluxations. Want to learn more go to www.mbschiropractic.com

You can take him to the hospital or a walk in clinic. But for sure I would find me a differrent doctor for my child....

I think it is to long for him to have diarrhea. My little one would have this problem on and off with mucus and blood in her stool from the day she was born and finally when she turned one we found out she has allergies to milk among other things! Call Dr. if you haven't already done so tell him baby cant handle it anymore he will probably tell you to take him in first thing in the morning and get a stool sample. But keep in mind food allergies.

I hope you have taken him to the hospital....It doesnt take a 2yr old long to become de-hydrated and then need intervenous fluids....Please let us know how this turns out.

take him to the ER. If it was a bug, lab tests can confirm it. If not when did your child start eating food? Drinking cow's milk? Have you noticed any correlation between introducing new foods and the diarrhea? My daughter has chronic diarrhea and would have it for weeks and moths. It would clear up for few days then diarrhea again for weeks/months. I finally took her to a pediatric gastroenterologist/nutrionist. After months and months of testing for h. pylori, and other 'bugs'. It then tooks months and months to get the diarrhea under control. Take you child to the hospital. there will be many many stool samples. I wish you well.

If you switched him to milk, then that's most likely the problem. Eliminate ALL dairy products (yes, even goldfish crackers) from his diet. You can also have his allergies treated the NAET way so you don't have to eliminate anything from his diet because the blockages will be cleared from his body. Dairy (casein) is the cause of many developmental, gut and behavioral problems with children/teens/adults!

I would take him to ER or an urgent care. How is he acting? Is he lethargic? Is he drinking Lots? Fever Cranky? Sleeping good? He is probably dehydrated and feels very yucky. When my kids would get diarrhea they poor bottoms would be so irritated! They will probably do blood work and hopefully find the cause. Make sure and mention either to them or remind your Dr. this has been a problem for quite awhile. Better safe than sorry. Good Luck!

Did your Dr. give you a stool sample test? My daughter had diarrhea for 5 weeks when she was 4 months old. My other daughter who was 6 at the time had the same thing first, and we did the stool sample test. Everything with her came back negitive. So, when the baby got it, the Dr. figured it was a virus that had to run its course. My daughter, the 6 year old, had blood in her stool after having the diarrhea for 3 weeks. The blood was from her being irritated, not from the diarrhea itself. If you haven't already done the stool test, I would tell the dr. you want one, esp. since you are now seeing blood. That will rule out any infections the baby may or may not have.

I would go to the hospital. He shouldn't have diarrhea for that long and definitely shouldn't have blood in it.
