My 10 1/2 month old son used to sleep through the night no problem, but this week he has been waking up crying and won't go back to sleep for almost an hour of rocking. He is a very strong willed child and will cry untill he throws up if I let him cry it out. I think he is getting another tooth but I don't know if that is the problem or if he is just going through a phase but I am so tired. I would appreciate any kind of advise. I have tried oragel and tylenol.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I really think that it was his teeth. The last few nights he has been sleeping fine. Now that I say that he will probably get up tonight. It also may have been that he was getting up because he really got the hang of walking last week and the milestone of that. I really appreciate everyones imput. You guys Rock!!

He might have an ear infection. I know my daughter did the same thing when she was little and I also thought it was from her teeth but come to find out she had a double ear infection.
Hope this helps.

M.,

This has happened to me and my grandmother told me what to do. This is one of the things that has been handed down for centries in my family. My grandmother is straight from Poland. And it did work for me and my family.

According to what you wrote above it sounds like your son might be having nightmares that will wake him in the middle of the night. Seeing as he is so young, the nightmare is probably of you not being there. His sourse of protection and comfort. What you need to do it put one of your shirts or something that smells like you in his bed or crib. Once he starts to have these nightmares of you not being there, he will smell you and know that you are always there. My son just stopped having them. I think its because he knew I was there and just didnt have the nightmare.
PS use some commonsense with this also, do not put a scarf in the bed or crib, so that he will coke. Some people that I have told put their perfume on a teddy bear that was in the crib. Be creative but safe.

I hope this helps, I have had many people do this and it always works.

Hi M. - My husband and I went through the same thing with our son who is now 2. If he is not calming down from rocking, it very well could be nightmares or the insecurity of realizing that you are not there when he wakes up in the dark. We would have to lay him back down (even though he was still crying) and tell him it was okay. We would start off standing next to the crib, and each night take a step closer to the door. Reassure him that you are still there if he starts crying again and if he sits up or stands up, lay him back down and give him a few pats on the back. Yes, it does sound a lot like sleep training, but it did work when he started waking up randomly in the middle of the night crying hysterically.

Another thought is that it could be gas pains. My son had a very hard time and still occasionally does at age 2 with gas pains. You may want to try some Mylicon or another similar remedy. Have you introduced any new foods to him recently? Sometimes there stomachs get so used to what you're feeding, that when something new is introduced, it can cause havoc in their little tummies.

I would say that if this continues despite everything you try, you may want to consult your pediatrician if you haven't already. Good Luck!

Hi M.! my name is D. and I am a mother of a 3 and 1/2 year boy. From about 18 months my son starting doing the same thing. I was told it could be from getting new teeth to having bad dreams or even what events happened in that day. He is still going throught it now every once in awhile. Just keep doing what you are doing!!

Teething is definitely a possibility.

Is he learning any new skills? Both of mine would go through periods of waking at night when they were close to mastering a new skill...sitting, crawling, walking, language bursts, etc. It would last a week or two as they were so focused on the new skill. Then they'd suddenly they'd go back to their regular sleeping pattern as suddenly as they had started the waking up once they figured out how to do the new skill.

Good Luck

My daughter did the same thing. She would also throw up if we let her cry. I finally got sick of trying to get her back to sleep so I would let her cry. If she threw up I would go in change her and the sheets and put her right back in the crib. It only took about 3 days for her to realize that wasnt gonna get her up anymore and she stopped waking up.

He most likely is teething. I would try giving him some orajel and tylenol before he goes to bed.

My daughter started doing the exact same thing at that age after having slept through since she was 8 weeks. With her we think it is nightmares b/c it is an hysterical crying different from when a tooth has bothered her during the day. It happened for several nights in a row and then went away. Now only about once every other week and she is 11.5 months...

We just hold her and talk to her until she was calm, or divert her with a toy (in the dark though) to get her over it.

My son that is almost 2 does that every couple of months also, and it always means that he has an ear infection. Some babys don't show any other symtoms. Keep a good eye on weather or not he is sticking his finger in his ear or pulling on it.

Thanks,
M.
