These are some ways I burp him:

My oldest didn't burp either. He was always comfortable though. Because of this I havn't worried about the newest (now 8 month old) baby burping. He burps all by himself about 50% of the time and the rest of the time he doesn't burp either. Also, he is comfortable, and thats the main thing.

My little (exclusively breastfed) guy was never really a "burper". He would pretty much burp on his own if he needed to, but would very rarely do it when we tried to burp him. I wouldn't worry about it, as long as he doesn't seem to be in distress. Good luck! :)

I agree with Leilani, I found that a simple back massage in an upward motion would ALWAYS bring a burp or TWO!! Just hold you baby to your chest and start at the bottom of his back and gently rub upward, it should work, and even if not it's more gentle and soothing than smackin him on the back. Good luck!

My daughter never burped. I would dutifully try every time, and nothing ever came out. I quickly stopped worrying. she was a champion nurser and didn't seem to be bothered by not burping. So i'd do my due diligence but not concern myself if no burps came up. C'est la vie.

Hi K.,
My son didn't burp much either. Some kids just don't need it. I would feed him and still give him a couple of pats just in case, but I wouldn't continue to pat him until he burped. I read somewhere that trying to burp them for a long time can actually cause gas and reflux issues. Can't remember where I read it. But I figured that since he didn't spit up he didn't really need it.

Unless he seems to be in distress, don't worry about it.

Try gripe water.... it worked for my daughter. She would never burp either and it seemed to help alot. It is a homeopathic liquid, european in origin and Wallgreens carries it. It may be a life saver for you. Good luck

If he's not uncomfortable then don't worry about it. Try for a little bit after each feeding, but don't try to force it. Breastfed babies swallow much less air and the traditional, feed-then-burp pattern of a bottle fed baby isn't always necessary. My little boy burps more now than he did early on (he's 3.5 months) - but he mostly a big farter ;)

Some babies don't need it. Another way to get your son to burp is lay him on his back, face up, after feeding. If after a minute or two he starts to move around trying to get comfortable, there's a good chance he's ready to burp. This worked for me.

If you are feeding him with your breast, he won't need to burp. It's only when they are fed with bottles and assorted artifical means and use pacifiers, that infants need to burp since they swallow air as they're trying to eat and comfort. Don't know if this applies to you or not, but no one ever told me this with my first!

My daughter wasn't a big burper either (is now, and thinks it's funny!). I also used gripe water and mylicon drops whenever she seemed rather fussy from gas, otherwise it's not a big issue. Burping them is to help relieve gas. If it isn't there, then there is no need to relieve it ;-D

My grandaughter was a hard burper too and we found if we held her on our lap and laid her back, and sat her up and laid her back and sat her up, it would help the bubbles to come up easier. Just try it a few times and see if it works.I guess it helped get the air bubbles all stirred up and helped move them to the top of her tummy to let them out. Merry Christmas to you and your family. Hi there,

Congratulations on your baby!

My baby wasn't a burper. Maybe yours isn't either? If you give it a try and he doesn't burp, then I wouldn't worry about it.

Take care,

H.

Try leaning him forward pointing away from you with his legs in your lap. Have him on his belly with the palm of your hand just at the bottom of his rib cage with your hand and fingers supporting his chest and head, while you gently pat or rub his back, rubbing in circles. Flex your wrist so your palm is slightly pressing into his belly. It worked for mine. Goodluck to you and Merry Christmas.

Hi K.-
My nephew gets alot of gas and has a hard time burping (but eventually does). When I burp him, i pat the under side of his bottom while he is propped over my shoulder instead of his back. If I pat his back, I pat the lower back. It seems to soothe him and rustles the gas to one end or the other, sometimes both. =) If you are using bottles that eliminate gas, he may not have much- or if you are breastfeeding and his tummy is compatible with your diet, he may just not have much. Does he spit up at all? That may be where the gas is if he has any. I have noticed that the older they get, the less they burp- one good one and then they are wanting more.
Hope this helps!

It could be that he's a quiet burper. Sometimes I'll burp but it's just a bit of unexpected air coming up with no sound or physical urpyness.

We have never burped our babies, we have rubbed our babies backs, we would rub with our thumb and first finger UP the spine. Your fingers should should hug the spine. Rub slowly with some pressure up the spine a few times and THAT has ALWAYS got our kids to burp. In adition if you pat a lot that causes MORE GAS before you know it you are causing the bubles to doulbe or pop causing more.
If our babies had digestion isues we would rub their bellies in a clockwise motion with our first three fingers around their belly buttons. We would usually get a burp or two along with a poop.
These are gentle ways we have treated gas for our babies.
Hope it helps
