Must Have Breast Lumpectomy (Atypical Cells Biopsy) Any Advice?

Had my first mammography, then they did a biopsy because I have a fibro adenoma. It was benign, but they found atypical cells. Now they want to do a lumpectomy. It is very small and off to the side, at least. Has anyone had experience with this? Is there anything I should know? Should I ask for a certain kind of surgery, or anything?

What can I do next?

Hello W.. My name is T. and I had a lumpectomy several months ago after having my daughter. It's a very easy out patient surgury and I had no problems. I could do everything like a usually did within hours, but they tell you not to do much heavy lifting. It's been 6 months and I am doing fine. Good luck! If you have any questions I can try and answer them.

Sorry to hear of you problem W.. "lumpy boosums" (my gma calls it) rum in our family. My mom has has 3 lumpectomys done. Her oldest sister has had a dbl mastectomy, because they opted to biopsy one lump and it burst and spread rapidly. From my experience, always go with a full lumpectomy over any biop. 4 out 6 daughters (my mom included) have removed lumps - now my cousins & I are gettiing mammograms done ourselves - twice as young as our mothers - and 2 of my cousins younger than me have had lumps taken out as well. Good luck to you, You will be in our paryers.

Hi W. - this is a really tough thing to deal with, I am sorry you have to go through it! I worked for years at KMC in the Pathology department (they are the doctors who do the reading of the slides to determine whether they are normal, atypical, malignant, etc.) My primary advice to you would be to get a surgeon who is agressive toward the atypia but gentle to the body - you don't want to have your nose cut off for a freckle, you know what I mean? You also want to make sure that the Pathologists reading your slides are good. If you would like names/numbers of great docs, I would be happy to give them to you - I don't want to be pushy, though!

my mom was diagonosed with breast cancer in August! She had to have a double masactomy and is currently going through chemo treatments!! She is doing well! But I've thought a lot about it and I feel that I would have to look deeper into the lumpectomy if I were you! It's always a worry of "did they get all the cells?" I would definitely get a second opinion in your case and weigh all the options!! Dr. Runk off Red bank Road is amazing!! She has really helped our family out a lot!! Good Luck!!

Good luck with all this! I know nothing about medicine...Just wanted to send good thoughts! My kids are teenagers too. I think most of the people on here have "rug-rat" aged kids...not many teenagers. We are somewhere between the car thing and starting to college search. A 1st Date moment could happen any time. Are you there yet? P.
