Multiple Allergies, Behavioral Problems like Hitting with 6Yo Son

Does anyone else have a child who is like Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde? I can't figure out what is the issue with him...what we do know is that he can't tolerate a lot of sugar, and he has multiple allergies (cats, dogs, tree nuts, wheat, pollen, grass, ragweed, dust mites, etc.) and we are starting to work on that (with pediatric specialist)...the main behavioral problem is hitting (me, his 4yo sister, and sometimes his father). We are now speaking to his teacher about getting him social services through the school to see if they can come up with a diagnosis. So far, he has had only one rough day at school in which he refused to do his work. Otherwise, he is cooperative. Please any feedback with possible solutions or ideas would be appreciated. He is very sensitive emotionally, and can be a very loving child at times.

So What Happened?

thank you everyone...I will be trying many or all of the suggestions listed....one thing I have been looking into is taking him off Singulair (which he's been off for 5 days now--I've been reading some alarming reports from parents with children on this medication) for his asthsma--I think the withdrawal effects created an extreme 3 days of behavioral aggression and tantrums/crying....plus now I'm going to eliminate all sugar, corn syrup, food dyes and perservatives, etc. and try the Feingold diet, etc. I decided 3 months ago that I was going to work on getting myself as healthy as possible first and then I would know more about helping our son, so I've been eating a raw vegan diet mostly and I am doing the Master Cleanse. I will be contacting some of you individually for more feedback. thank you so much for all of your input. It really means a lot to me. Sincerely, P.

Hi P.,
A lot of times behavioral issues go hand in hand with food sensitivities or allergies because there is an underlying health issue causing them both. We found that my daughter had a ton of food sensitivities due to candida and leaky gut syndrome. Once we eliminated the offending foods, she starting to heal and get better. 3 days off of an "offender," and she's a complete angel, but accidentally give her something again and boom, Hyde is back. Its amazing how much it can screw with her system. I can give you tons of info. if you would like it on what we have tries and what has and has not worked - let me know if you'd like that.

Thanks,
K.

Just my 2 cents -- just heard from a friend about her daughter having behavioral changes while taking Pulmicort for asthma. I know you didn't mention asthma but other drugs do have worrying side effects as well.

Sounds like a lot if the mamas on here have experience and good advice for you.

Best of luck in resolving the situation.

I don't know if you have thought about diet. Is it possible that he has food allergies as well. I know of some really good children's vitimans that help with the allergies. We as a family have had alot of results with these vitimans. Let me know if you want to talk more. I can be reached at ____@____.com.

Thank You and good luck.

Hi P.,

I can only tell you of my results in dealing with my son who had similar aggression issues that began escalating around age 4. We removed high fructose corn syrup from his diet and saw remarkable results. It took us awhile to find it hidden in so many foods. We would see his behavior change and go back to his diet and find he had eaten something with high fructose corn syrup. We also have removed red dye 40 as we have seen similar issues. Lord knows neither item is necessary in our diets. Just was a change in shopping and totally eliminating it from the house so that we didn't accidentally let him have something. My son has no allergies that we are aware of at this time. He is 6 and doing well. Still has some behavior issues but typically at home and nothing like we had seen previously. It sounds like you are on the right path. Best of luck! It is hard to see our kids not acting like themselves.

I don't have any advice for you except for you to join a couple of yahoo groups that I've found EXTREMELY helpful in dealing with my daughter's allergies. ____@____.com and ____@____.com are absolutely wonderful. I can really relate to the allergy thing though. My 2 3/4 yr old daughter is allergic to grass, ragweed, pollen, chamomile, wool, lanolin, strawberry, seafood, shellfish, and all dairy. She's ana to the last 3 and possibly chamomile. Do you know not to give chamomile tea to a person w/ragweed allergies? Message me if you'd like links. - J.

I'd definately bring him to my homeopath, she does mostly children. It's important to get this under control before he gets older & homeopathy has helped my son so much. You don't want your son put on psych meds at at young age which I'm afraid may happen if he is "diagnosed" with something. If you want her number, just email me. good luck.

Been there done that! You could have been writing my story years ago. Anyway... Allergies are a sign of a weak immune system. I found that there was never one solution, but a combination. Yes, he was extremely allergic to sugar. That was the first change. I got him on really good supplement that was made from whole food, not chemicals. I got rid of all the chemical houshold cleaners because as I discovered, this was problably the initial cause of everything. That meant the laundry stuff, dishwashing stuff and ALL other cleaners. I actually had to get them out of the house. I had a new boy in 3-4 weeks and his allergies were really subsided in about 6 months. Let me know if you want to know more.

My baby sister was "hyperactive" when she was little. My parents refused to put her on drugs so they tried the Feingold diet with amazing results. The biggest thing for her was artificial colors, artificial flavors and preservatives. When she had these her personality would change, and she would sometime become mean. Try removing these from his diet and see if that helps. Also, you can check out more information and other recomendations at feingold.org.
Good luck!

Try looking into PANDAS. Here is a really awesome forum:

http://www.latitudes.org/forums/index.php?showforum=17

PANDAS stands for Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders associated with Strep.

To see a list of diagnostic symptoms:
www.webpediatrics.com
(This is the site of a local pediatrician who treats PANDAS)

This sounds A LOT like how my daughter started out, and a lot of these children seem to really start presenting with aggression around age 6-7.

Feel free to message me if you would like more info or just to chat.

There were good suggetions here but I wanted to add just one- have you tried sunlight? Does wonders for my 7 year old and 2 year old's moods. I know it's so simple but the importance of Vitamin D in the body is super important and many kids who have been diagnosed with allergies end up missing it. Here is a great article to check out: http://www.naturalnews.com/022889_Vitamin_D_calcium_cance...

This is often common with kids who have multiple allergies, he probably has some food sensitivities as well. Typically the kids most favorite foods are the biggest culprits, the body craves more to keep the system weakened aka immune system.

A book called Is This My CHild? By Dr. Dorris Rapp www.drrapp.com discusses this very issue in her book, she even calls it the Dr. Jeckyll/Mr.Hyde syndrome. She has some stuff on YouTube if you type in Dr. Dorris Rapp, she was on Oprah way back in the 80's/90's.
