Multi Vitamin, Opinion Needed

Hey moms out there. I've never been a fan of taking multi-vitamins. I've always read that it can actually do more harm than good if you are already getting enough of some kinds through your diet. And since I'm never sure what specific one I may be lacking in, I haven't been taking any vitamins. However, for the last several months I've been dealing with extreme fatigue and lack of energy so I am looking again at vitamins. So I wanted some other moms to weigh in on this. Do you take a multi-vitamin and if so which kind and have you noticed a difference? Or does anyone just take certain vitamin supplements, again, if so what kind and have you been able to tell a difference in energy level? I'm 31 and have 2 kids and I have to have some energy to keep up with my daily life. I'm bone-tired every day and it's starting to get frustrating. I know my eating isn't the greatest, but it's not like I eat junk food all day! I also exercise regularly and already drink plenty of water. But still extremely tired.

What can I do next?

I second the Melaleuca mama. I have been taking their multi vitamins for about a year and I noticed a difference within a month. I have talked and referred other mamas (and papas) to these vitamins and all have liked them. I also have a friend who found out pregnant and has switched to their prenatal and really likes them.

Go to a health food store and get a whole food vitamin.
DO NOT purchase any vitamin from a drug store, Walmart, or Target...they are cheap and full of fillers...a waste of money.

Someone below mentioned Vitamin D...I couldn't agree more.
Just make sure it is D3 (not D2).
D3 is the sunshine vitamin...and may help you feel heaps better.
Check out some good reading on this subject from Dr. Mercola at his website mercola.com.

Hope this helps ya!

Blessings,
AnneMarie

I heard on NPR recently that even those who get out into the sun are probably low on vitamin D, so a supplement is good for everyone.

One thing you don't state is what you DO eat! Are vegetables a staple at every meal? This is a challenge for me, too. I could make a little sandwich out of meat, cheese, and bread and call it a "meal." We all could use more veggies. Also, be sure your breakfast cereal has fiber in it. If I reach for one that doesn't (like Special K), I mix it with one that does (like Kashi).

Here is the NPR story I heard:

It's a good idea to go to your doctor to rule out any problems. They will probably run some test to make sure you don't have any deficiencies that are causing your fatigue. Having said that, don't expect too much help from your general doctor if you are healthy. I am going through that myself...I have been doing some research on my own, and I found out about a condition that it's not recognized by traditional medicine because is not a disease per se--it's called adrenal fatigue.
If you decide to explore that concept, you can decide by yourself if it applies to you. If you have access to a Naturopathic doctor, see one. Specific vitamins, supplements, and changes in lifestyle is the solution.
Here you have some links:

I have been taking this: Enzymatic Therapy Fatigued To Fantastic! Energy Revitalization System 30 Day Supply Berry Splash -- 19 oz + 30 capsules
It has been only a week, and I have finally begun to feel better!!!
I hope it helps!!!

The best multivitamin I am aware of is Aved Multi. It is made by Anabolic Laboratories in Irvine, CA. Anabolic is the only manufacturer in the country who tests every single batch they make for purity and dosages. You can research the company info at www.anaboliclabs.com. They are only available through a healthcare professional, but if you call them, they can refer you to someone.
You are right, most multivitamins available over the counter are worthless. They are not tested for purity or dosages, and many just pass right through your system. Once I was educated on vitamins and supplements, the only kind I will put into my body or my children's is Anabolic's.

I would make an appt with your general doctor. Just to make sure nothing is wrong. Being very tired can be an indicator of a bigger issue.

That being said, I just take a general vitamin everyday.

Good luck :)

I would get a physical first and rule out thyroid issues or even lack of Iron before you waste your money on sublements that may or may not even work. Also look at your diet. Add more fresh dark green veggies and fruits and whole grains. A good diet is better any day than something out of a bottle.

Hi ZooMomma. I never took them either, assuming I ate enough fruits and vegetables to cover my needs. But like you, I began to feel fatigued, just generally run down. It occurred to me that I might actually need minerals, so bought some generic daily multi-vitamins with minerals aimed at my age group. Now maybe it was the placebo effect, or the empowerment of doing something, anything, to promote my own well-being, but within 4 days, I felt better. Within two weeks, I was myself again. They aren't expensive and worth a try. If they don't help, maybe you should consult a doctor to test for underlying condition. Hope you feel better soon.

It is highly unlikly you are getting enough vitamins from your food. We have been depleteing the nutrients in our soil for decades now. For example a tomato today has roughly 30% - 50% less nutrients than a tomato grown 20 years ago. And the vitamins that are put into products are only about 10% absobable by the body. The rest goes down the drain.

I use Vitality for Life Vitamins from Melaleuca. The are compounded to allow for 70% more absobability than any other vitamin. The explination is long and pattened so you can't find it anywhere else.

I'd be happy to talk to you more about it!

Hi
Shaklee is the number one seller of natural supplements. They literally saved my life, so I became a distributor. The other mom is wrong. Shaklee has been testing every batch for purity, correct ingredients, no pesticides or other contaminants, vic etc. for almost 55 years. And they are the only company that has proof that their vitamins work. See http://www.landmarkstudy.com/ You can find the products and read more about Shaklee at http://www.shaklee.net/healthforlife.
I am 55 with two teenage sons. I survived two major health problems, either one of which would have killed most people or put them in a nursing home. I have tons of energy. I teach exercise classes 5 days a week and do personal training. Plus, most people think I am 10-15 years younger than I am.
If you are interested, you can go to http://www.bobsfiles.net and listen to some great health audios. Nothing is sold there, it's free. The answer to the question you will be asked to enter the site is "shaklee."
Besides, good quality vitamins, exercising will give you more energy.
Good luck to you!

my experience with multivitamins is this - when i take them regularly, my nails and hair are healthier. i get sick less. i feel more "even" physically. hard to explain. but i didn't take them for awhile, and i noticed the difference. then i started up again recently. we have moved, had huge stress going on in our lives, and just a couple weeks ago my son was sick with a NASTY bug. (these are all normally huge indicators that i'm about to get sick) i even doubled up for a few days on vitamins when i felt it was trying to get me. i did get the sniffles and felt cruddy for a couple days, but i didn't get sick like he did, and usually i get exactly what he gets. i was able to get through it without missing any work (BIG deal for me, especially since i had missed when he was sick). i give the credit to the vitamins. i actually use the walmart brand that is just like centrum. same vitamins in them.

just my experience!
