EDITED WITH MORE INFO. & UPDATES ...

I'm sure there's someone else out there who has been through this already and can help me with advice, help, support, tips about making a BIG move ... from Mississippi to Kansas City (800 miles & 12 hrs.) with a family: Joey (my husband), Connor (our 4 yr. old son), and Christina (our 5-month old daughter but she will be about 7 months when we move). I'd be grateful for any help or support.

Here's a little bit more info ---

At the beginning of August, if not sooner, we will begin our move from Mississippi to North Kansas City, zip code 64118, area code (816).

The reason for our move is my husband will be attending MidWestern Seminary (N. Oak Trafficway). We plan to be in this area for at least 3-4 years while my husband gets his Master's Degree in Collegiate Ministry. He graduated in Dec. and received his B.S. in Religion from Liberty University (distance-learning program). My husband has been in the ministry for the past 15 yrs. He is currently a full-time pastor and an Associate BSU Director (Baptist Student Union) at a nearby college.

Last summer (’06) we vacationed in Kansas City & toured the campus where my husband will be attending. So hopefully this will make the transition a little easier.

As of now, unless something changes, we will be living in an apartment on campus. I’m glad that we are able to rent an apartment here b/c I’ve been told that apartment rentals in the KC area can get expensive and we are uncertain of our financial situation at this point. My husband has his resume out in the area and we are praying for a ministry position to become available soon. The Lord will provide; He always has. :)

Before I had my son I was a substitute school teacher for 4 yrs. and I loved it very much. Then, when our son was born my husband & I decided that I would stay home with him. So, I hope to be able to continue to stay at home with our kids b/c I feel this is important and where I’m needed most and plus if I were to get a job I’d basically be working to pay daycare for 2 kids, right? Our son won’t be able to attend school until he is 6 yrs. old b/c his b-day is in Nov., -- if we decide to send him to school – We are considering Home Schooling. (I also have a post about this too) Plus, another thing that would hinder me working is I breastfeed my daughter & she refuses to take a bottle so I can’t get away from her for long at all (she nurses 4-5 times a day now).

Our family has lived in Mississippi all our lives and we are about to make a really big move from what we've always known - our friends & family are all here within about 30 minutes driving of each other - to moving to Kansas City, the unfamiliar, the unknown - new job, new home, making new friendships, etc. Even though I have a lot of mixed emotions about moving, I am excited about experiencing something new - a fresh start in a new place. I know that I will meet new people and make new friends and perhaps I can be involved in a Mom’s Groups like MOPS or a stay-at-home mom group. (please e-mail me if you have any suggestions).

I know God has great things in store for our family in Kansas City … So, we’re gearing up and getting ready … Kansas City, here we come! :)

So What Happened?

Well, we are finally here in KANSAS CITY!! We had a pleasant trip up here from Mississippi and have gotten all moved in. A week later we're still trying to find things and are unpacking boxes -- it will take time to get everything sorted but all is well and we are enjoying living here on N. Oak. We're finding everything pretty well. We know where the important things are like Wal-Mart, Target, Price Chopper, HyVee, the bank, etc. We still have to change over our drivers license, register our vehicles, and tedious stuff like that but that's all a part of the moving process.

We're still trying to find our way around and it will still take some time. So, any help that you could offer would be great. My husband & little boy went to Independence today to Cool Crest Family Fun Center for him to play golf. We found this fun place last year while we were on vacation here in KC. Any other suggestions for fun places for kids that's not too expensive -- we need something that's easy on the budget. We also visited Bananarama? in Lee's Summit? I did a search for it on the web but I can't seem to find it again. Do you know what I'm referring to?

Thank you all so much for your encouragement, tips, & advice. Please continue to keep us in your thoughts & prayers as we make this transition. :) Please e-mail me for any further tips or helpful advice. Thanks! :)

Well welcome to KC. I've lived here most of my life and love it. There are a lot of nice playgroups in the area that would definately help you meet new people and help find your way around. I'm a member of the Young and SAHM's of Liberty. You can actually find them on this website. They are great and so friendly. Actually there's a good portion of them who have relocated to KC here recently as well.

Good luck with your move. Feel free to contact me for questions or etc. I have a 12 year old daughter, 2 year old daughter and 7 week old son.

Congratulations on your move! I have lived here for over ten years and would be happy to give you information about the area. If you need information about neighborhoods, or places to buy/rent, just let me know. I have a 6 year old son and we have lived in several neighborhoods.

Have you found a house up here in NKC? I can understand your frustration with the move. I am from KC and we used to live in Cape Girardeau, MO to go to school. THat is almost 6 hours away from our family. I think you will like KC, but I can understand your feelings being away from family with little kids. I am 28 yrs old and have a 4 year old boy, and 1 year old boy. I teach middle school for NKC. I would gladly help you with adjusting to the move.

Hi M.,
I truly feel for you. I recently moved from South Dakota where I have lived all of my life (33 years) to Kansas City to join my husband who got a job here. I am now 8 months pregnant and going to be a stay at home mom. It was horrible at first--I missed my dear friends and family but it has gotten easier. I joined all of the women's groups I could find through our church--I even found myself scrapbooking with all of the elderly ladies! I met some wonderful people and developed friendships. I also encouraged my husband to invite his work friends and their families over for dinner and that was wonderful as well. Be patient and things will get better!
Let me know how you are doing!

I have lived near KC (Smithville) all my life and still do! I love it here. For me personal I like living north of Barry Road. It is a great city and full of friendly people! Good Luck to you and your family!

Just thought I'd recommend a great church for you guys really close to where you'll be: Antioch Bible Baptist Church www.antiochbbc.org I went there for years and Pastor Bob is truly an incredible person with a passionate heart for God and his church congregation. I moved away from that particular area and attend a different church now that's closer to my home, but I loved being at Antioch and have many fond memories of the people and my experiences there. I've maintained contact through the years with a lot of people who still go there. Good luck with the move!

We used to attend Antioch Bible Baptist Church. We stopped because we moved out of town and when we came back we just found something closer to us. We really liked Pastor Bob, but not the crowdedness of the church. Even after the building was expanded it still just seemed too big and too impersonal to us. I'll bet we were never missed when we moved.

M. while i am happy you are bringing a pastor to this area and it is desperatly needed i am a little concerned of the differences you will face once you are here. May i ask what area of town you are moving to? I havew lived here my entire life. i did leave and move to Goergia for a bit and talk about culture shock the lifestyles here are much more fast paced and scary compared to the life i experienced in the southern states. Be very careful of where you move the areas of KC vary extremely from street to street. i would love to explain things to detail but i will tell you alittle story on how bad it has gotten here i have had my home for 25 years. I have left and came back alot. I decided to retire in this home because the street is a dead end quiet and peaceful never had any problems before NOW. We have new neighbors who are horrible they stand in the front yard with loud music that is vulgar and disrespectful. They stand out there and argue with such profane words i can't even let my grandchildren come to visit and play out front in the yard i worked so hard to make beautiful for fear of what the may hear or find like beer bottles and drug pharaphelenia I just offer a great warning to buying a home here check it out before the sun goes down as well as when it does on the weekends and thru the week. We havent had 3 days go by without the police being here and you would of never quessed it by the look of the outside . Good luck in your endeavor and may it be blessed with Gods help.
