Moving to Utah, Considering LDS

Hello, I was raised Missionary Baptist. My husband and I, with our children, lived in Utah for 7 years, then our jobs required us to move away. Now, we are moving back this summer (July 2009). We fell in love with Utah and feel that it's where we're meant to be. We're considering converting to LDS, but don't know a lot about it. Can we just walk into a church? We're building a house in Farmington and there's an LDS church right across the street. Is it acceptable to go to that church without any notice or invitation?

What can I do next?

Hi T.,

My husband is military and therefore we move frequently as well, this is our second time in Utah and we have also fallen in love with the area!! I would encourage you to PLEASE try Alpine Community church which meets both in Layton and Riverdale before you join the LDS church. We are a non-denominational church. You can just walk into this church as well!! It is a great community of believers who are truly seeking to know God through the Bible. While we are growing, the great part of about Alpine is home groups which meet weekly and truly get you connected to other believers.

Here is the church website...

http://www.alpinechurch.org/

Please let me know if you would like to visit Alpine, I would love to meet you and help you get your kids settled into kids church, youth group, etc. I have a 5,3, and 1 year old! We are currently meeting at Layton Jr. High just right off 1-15, Antelope Drive Exit. The services are at 930 and 1100. My email address is ____@____.com, I would love to meet you, please let me know if you plan to visit so we could meet.

Thank you,

E. Shnowske

You are welcome to just walk into the churches. There is a web sit that will tell you what ward that you would go to, what time the meeting starts, and which building to go to. I know that it is kind of silly but you might not be going to the one that is closest to your house. That web site it
http://www.lds.org/ldsorg/v/index.jsp?vgnextoid=e419fb40e...
To find the building I would go to the A-Z Index and look under building finder. And also on this web site you can find out a lot of information on the LDS church. I hope that you enjoy it because my family and I really do!!

Hi T.!

I live in Layton so I won't be too far away from you. I love Farmington! You can absolutely walk into any LDS church and attend which ever meeting you like. If you do end up wanting to attend on a regular basis, you will probaby want to find out which Ward your house is in and start attending that after a while. But until you get to that point, feel free to go when the time is right for you.

My husband went a mission (about 12 yrs ago). If you have any questions please feel free to ask or email me. And we'd be happy to get you set up with missionaries if you would like.

Good Luck!

A.

You can for sure walk into any church. I also live in Farmington and it is a great place to be. Church time normally starts at 9am or 1pm. If you would like I can get you in touch with the missionaries in the area. They are great in helping you know what time the other people in your area go to church and they can also teach you more about the church. Let me know if you need anything when getting moved here. Would you be moving into the houses that Elite Craft homes are building? Just wondering.

Yes, of course, you may come in. All are welcome. I suggest, if you're looking for more information, to go out to these websites.
www.lds.org
www.mormon.com

I also suggest you locate the missionaries so that you can learn the basics of the LDS religion.

Consider everything carefully, pray, and know that God your Heavenly Father will answer you regarding any and all of your inquiries.

Farmington is a great place to live. I live in Farmington and have loved it. You are certainly welcome to walk in to the church any sunday morning. You also might want to check with your neighbors to find out what time they go to church. Each ward has a different time that they meet and it depends on where you live what time you meet. If you are a little shy to talk with your neighbors going to the ward time at 9 am should help you know what time to meet.

Yes. It's perfectly fine to go to the church without notice, etc. LDS meetings on Sunday are in 3-hour blocks, including Sunday School class sessions (divided by age groups), and the worship service called Sacrament Meeting. They usually go from 9 to noon or 1 to 4, but some can vary depending on how many congregations share the building. You can find out meeting times by just walking into the building, or just ask a neighbor or two. I have a brother-in-law in Farmington, and they love it there. I hope you have a happy experience there, too. For more info about the church, I would recommend going to their official website, which is lds.org. You can get most of your questions answered about church teachings, etc. Welcome back to Utah -- and I hope you will receive a warm welcome in your neighborhood and at the LDS church across the street! I'd be happy to answer any additional questions you might have.

Farmington is a wonderful area! I live in Bountiful, so I'm only a few minutes away. I hope to stay in the area for a very long time. Well, it looks like you've found your answer... it is yes! Our church is open to the public, so anyone is welcome to visit at any time. If you are moving into a developing community, it looks like there will be a lot of other new people there too, so when you go, you can tell them that you are considering the church and are interested in learning more. They can then give you more information, tell you about more things, and show you where all the classes are. Then, as everyone said, you can meet with the missionaries to ask all of your questions and learn more about the LDS church and the gospel. You have been given two awesome websites: lds.org, and mormon.org. You'll see that most of us absolutely love our religion and that is why we are excited about your interest! I'd also love to answer any more questions or help with anything you may need - info, missionaries, discussions, church buildings and meeting times, etc. The other neat thing is that the church has wonderful children's and youth programs for your kids!

Utah is a great place to live. It is very family oriented. You are always welcome at any LDS church house. There is many people who will be willing to help you. We have missionaries that will be able to answer all of your questions and will help you better understand the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, and the happiness that it can bring into you are your families lives. We believe in Christ and that we can return to live with Him as eternal families, sealed together for time and all eternity. Good luck with everything!

Hi T.! Yes, you are more than welcome to go to an LDS church without an invitation or advance notice. When you go to one, look on the front of the building; it has "Visitors Welcome" on it! I can find out what LDS church you would go to in your area. We have something called "wards." They are established according to physical boundaries. Send me a Personal Message and I will see what I can do to help. Are you interested in having the Missionaries come over and teach you? I can locate some that can. Let me know.

If you were raised missionary Baptist, it's unlikely that you'll agree with the LDS doctrine. I would highly recommend researching the doctrine and seeing if it meshes with your beliefs before you start attending the church. I think you'll be surprised at the differences. If you're just looking for a social setting, it would be a good choice, because the church is big into community. If you're more interested in sprituality, I would recommend more research.

T.,

Sure you can. All are invited, member or not. Just walk right in and speak with anyone telling them you are new and they will get you set up with some missionaries.

I just wanted to add a little so you know what to expect. Church is 3 hours; however, if that's long for just star ting out, you can just go to what's called sacrament meeting. Sacrament meeting is for everyone. It starts with the sacrament that symbolizes the Atonement. Then there will be 2 or 3 speakers. The speakers change each week & are just people from the congregation. Sacrament lasts slightly longer than an hour. It will either be the first meeting or the last meeting; you'll just have to go and see, I guess, since lds.org doesn't say whether sacrament is first or last (I thought it used to.)

You can absolutely go to church without any notice or invitation. You might check with your new neighbors to see what tine the Ward you would live in starts. There are usually three wards that meet in a building and the starting times are usualluy 9:00 A.M., 11:00 A.M., and 1:00 P.M. If you are interested in learning about the church, someone would be happy to teach you
