We are a military family and will be moving to the Newport News area this summer. I'm looking for any feedback on several things. Anyone know a great ballet studio, martial arts studio, pediatrician who accepts Tricare, great dentist for the family, orthodontist. Anyone have children in Our Lady of Mt. Carmel School or Peninsula Catholic High School. How about great Goodwills or Thrift Stores? I love digging around in those stores for great finds. How about nice neighborhoods. Kid friendly etc. Any feedback on anything would be great! Thanks So Much, M.

What can I do next?

Hi Michelle. We moved to Newport News last summer and really like it. We live in Hilton Village, which is in midtown Newport News between Warwick Boulevard (rte 60) and the James River. It is a great place to live with kids. People are friendly, the river and playground at Hilton Elementary are close by, and there are several preschools and churches within walking distance. It is also not too far from Mount Carmel, which is a very friendly church. I don't know a lot about the school. Hilton Elementary is supposed to be very good (my youngest starts next year) and Warwick High School has an International Baccalaureate program. I've heard mixed reviews of the middle schools. St. Andrew's Episcopal has a prek-5 school, and my daughters go to Hilton Presbyterian Preschool, which we love. We also also close to Huntington Park and a YMCA there.

The city of Newport News offers ballet and gymnastics classes at Riverside Gymnastics Center; they may offer martial arts as well. The YMCA may also have classes. I have also seen ballet and martial arts classes in buildings along Warwick Boulevard. We go to the pediatricians at the Children's Clinic, which is 321 Main Street. We like Dr. Broderick. We have gone to Dr. Trolenberg on Jefferson Avenue for a family dentist.

The Children's Hospital of the King's Daughters (CHKD) has several thrift stores in the area.

Hope your move to Newport News goes well and that you like it as much as we do!

Hi M.,

I would highly recommend the mom's group - Peninsula Mommies at I recently moved here (Yorktown)and found this group of mommies to be so resourceful. It is how I found a pediatrician, OB/GYN, places to shop, eat, etc. And believe it or not membership to this group is FREE! These moms are the best! Good Luck! Maybe we'll meet up when you get here!

Pediatrician: Check out Liberty Pediatrics - ###-###-#### They take Tricare. Dr. Obrokta and Dr. Davis are GREAT! Kids love their clinic - they have a dinosaur room, safari room, Spongebob room, etc.

Hi Michelle - I moved to York County (King's Villa in Tabb) in Dec...upon my retirement from the Air Force. I had been stationed at Langley in the mid-90s (lived in Newport News -- Kiln Creek) and just loved this area. I specifically looked at homes in York County + Poquoson because of the high standards and reputation of the public schools.

Based upon my experiences hunting/finding an orthodontist (up to a 2.5mo wait for a couple, outrageous $$ from another, etc.), I can happily recommend Dr. David Forest, 729 Thimble Shoals Blvd # 7a
Newport News, VA ###-###-####. He was recommended to me by a AF family + his treatment plan for my 12yo was totally in sync with her orthodontist in AL.

Even though my girls are 12, 5 + almost 3, all of us see Dr Charlotte Moore who is a contract doctor at Bethel Clinic...not a pediatrician... (I still have TRI-CARE Prime as a retiree) + military spouse.

Sorry I can't help with any of your other requests.
