Making temporary move (6 months) across country - midwest to northeast. No furniture or cars involved, but want to take some books (adults and child) and toys, laptops, maybe bedding. I am sure the list will get longer as time goes by. What is the cheapest way to do this? Is US Mail the only option?

What can I do next?

I would expect UPS, FedEx and the USPS to all be pretty affordable. I would definitely not look into using one of those PODS, as we looked into it a few years ago for shipping about 1 bedroom worth of items from IL to CA and they quoted us over a thousand bucks! Ummm, nope, items weren't even worth that much.

I helped my in-laws ship their car to CA and used a website called www.uship.com where you basically advertise for what you'd like to ship and where, and the vendors submit quotes/bids to you. I think they also do it for HHGs (Household Goods). Cost was pretty cheap compared to other places we searched.

You can ship by rail. I worked at an Antique Mall. They shipped dishes on the train. You may be able find info on the Internet or look up the train in the phone book. I've had difficulty finding info on trains because I don't know the official names that they use but I eventually find it.

You can also send it via Greyhound. Yes, you do have to take it to the depot and pick it up at it's destination. Again, call for prices.

I shipped a rug from the East coast to the West coast via a shipping company. A step van picked up the rug, which they told me how to prepare for shipping, and it was added to a van which left the area once it was full. Then a step-van delivered it to me. The cost was very reasonable and noticeably less than the cost of replacing it.

I shipped a couple of boxes with UPS. Sometimes UPS is less expensive than the USPS but sometimes it's the other way around. I do know that books/literature when shipped separately have a lower rate than other items at the post office. I'd compare prices at Fed Ex, UPS, and the other companies whose name I can't remember right now. Look in the yellow pages, probably under shipping. There are several companies that do this.

It may be less expensive to replace books, toys, bedding once you get there than to have them shipped. I learned that the hard way. I also suggest that you might want to ship the lap top separately, being sure to insure it.

Unless you have specific books to which you're attached, I suggest that you can replenish your supply for very little money at a thrift store. I purchased most of my children's books that way. I've found really good ones that showed little to no wear as well as ones that I was specifically looking for.

You are not driving there? Check with however you are going there (train, airline, etc.) and see if you can pay ewxtra to ship the things you want.

US mail can't possibly be the only option; there's UPS and Fed-Ex, but I have to think they'd be very expensive.

Greyhound will ship packages (I think someone must pick them up at the Greyhound station when they come in, I don't know how long they'll hold them for you).

Can you rent a U-Haul/small truck and drive the stuff to the new place?

Good luck, please let us knowwhat happens!

Are you a military dependent? The reason I ask is because I did exactly that same thing twice when my husband went on 6 month deployments. If so, check into the military relocation services to see if there is any kind of shipment allowance for your specific situation.

If not, I don't really know a lot about it. I would look into a PODS moving and storage unit, maybe they have containers the right size for you (there are some other companies just like them too, I just don't know their names). And I would google "household goods shipping".

The post office has a media mail rate that is very low. Other than that I can't think of a cheaper way.
