Hi,
There is a possibilty we might be moving to Dallas from San Jose sometime in the next year and I have some questions about the area. I have never been there and will probably be able to make one trip before a decision is made. I have done all the research however and I know where all the good schools are (on paper) but what I am looking for specifically are friendly neighborhoods with younger families that are accepting of Californians. I am 35 and have two kids: one in first grade and the other entering kinder next year. The areas we like are Flower Mound, Highland Village, Allen and Frisco. Any advice or personal experience would be greatly appreciated!

What can I do next?

As a realtor, I would be happy to share my knowledge with you.
If you would like to call me I could probably give you people that actually live in those towns.

Thanks a lot.

I have two friends that moved to DFW from CA. Ironically both are from the same area in CA, I cannot recall the area right now and they didnt know each other before moving but both chose the same neighborhood in McKinney. I would ideally recommend this area. I dont live in this area but know that it is top ranked in the nation and if two californians both liked this area, it must have something that attracts them.

Its McKinney, TX zip code 75070 near McKinney Ranch Pkwy and Gardenia Lane. I hope you enjoy Dallas. I love it here :)

You don't say where you are going to work, but some of the more northern communities are a viable option as well (maybe) like McKinney and Little Elm.

One thing to think about when you do move is that there are LOTS of neighborhoods that have community swimming pools. You really ought to look into moving into one of those - it's super hot here in the summer (you are going to be surprised).

Good luck!

All those areas are good, friendly cities with lots going on for young families. I would check the commute - just about EVERY highway is under construction here in Dallas right now and some aren't going to be finished for 5 years or so. Therefore, you might check the "real" commute time before committing. Regarding Frisco, it is a great city but there are some subdivisions going down quick due to low budget rentals and crime. I would be a bit picky about where i lived in Frisco, but what Frisco has to offer overall as far as retail, family activities, and friends is very good.

good luck!

Hi J.! Well the good news is, all of those areas you are considering are good areas. I would also look at where you will be commuting too as some of the other girls have said. I live in Allen, and love, love, love it. I work in North Dallas, so its a straight shot down 75, and no tolls, it takes me about 20 minutes to get to work. Allen has lots of family friendly neighborhoods, great schools, and shopping galore. PM me if you have any further questions.

Will you or a spouse be commuting? If working in Dallas proper, I highly recommend moving closer. There is a gem of a neighborhood in Richardson called Canyon Creek. They have amazing schools, they are diverse, involved, and most people in the neighborhood that I've met are open and accepting. Good luck!

I have an Allen address and we are Plano schools.. We LOVE our neighborhood, very diverse and I doubt many people in our neighborhood are born Texans. It is a transient neighborhood, friendly, lots of community activities, etc.

We LOVE the Plano schools as well. Our daughter is a Senior this year. Granted, Allen does have some good schools. Their high school is HUGE. Plano has 3 Sr High schools and I think the average at each Sr high (11-12th) is around 2100 students or so.

Allen has some very nice neighborhoods as does Frisco and Plano.

I love being within an hour from 2 airports and can be on the beach on either coast within appx 3 hrs. There is a lot to do for entertainment, great dining and shopping as well. We are inside 30 minutes from downtown Dallas.

PM me if you want more info. You'll get a lot of opinions which will pro and con each other on this post. Do your research and I do think you'll love it here if you do move here.

My friend just did a similar move. From San Jose to Houston.

Frisco is very family friendly. Great shopping, library, sports activities.

I love in Providence Village. Very community oriented and safe.

All of these areas are nice, and there are even some other small communitites you might look into as well (Shady Shores, Argyle, Corinth, Little Elm). I agree with those that have asked where you and/or your husband will be working, as commute can be a bummer depending on start and end point. I live in the Lake Cities (Shady Shores) area and we love it here. Several of my neighbors are CA transplants.

I am a REALTOR(r) in the area and would be happy to assist you in looking into specific neighborhoods depending on what type of housing you are looking to find. If you are able to make a trip or two here prior to making the move, we could visit some of the areas and see which one has the best feel to you.

Let me know if I can be of assistance!

We moved to the Dallas area from the east coast (NJ) about 8 years ago and decided that McKinney was the place for us. It was just ranked the #2 best place to live in the U.S.! It is also near some of the locations you've hit upon (Frisco, Allen). Obviously schools are a huge consideration for you. McKinney ISD has some great schools, but if you're preferring Allen ISD or Frisco ISD, you can still live in certain sections of McKinney (generally the southwest corner) and go to either Allen or Frisco schools. Allen is really nice, but the size of the high school was a total turn off for me -- I do not want my kids to go to a high school that has 6,000 students (and predicted to have even more in the future)! If looking at Allen, stick to neighborhoods on the west side of 75. Fairview is also another consideration. It is a smaller town and it does not have its own school system, so depending on where you live your child may go to Allen ISD, McKinney ISD or Lovejoy ISD. But it is very nice!

We just met a family who just moved here from California (our 5 year old daughters are playing soccer together). They live in McKinney but are in Frisco ISD school system. I will have to get the name of the neighborhood they live in, they seem very pleased with it. I know there are a lot of Californians that have come to the Dallas area (as a matter of fact, you'll be surprised at how many people you meet who are originally from out of state).

Commute will be another factor; one of the other responders hit the nail on the head when she said that so many of the roads are under construction right now. So do some research on real commute time from the places you are looking at to wherever you and/or your husband will be commuting to.

If you're looking in the Highland Village area, you need to check into Lantana. Both elementary schools, in the neighborhood, are exemplay and the middle school, also within Lantana is recognized. 5 pools, golf course, great people from all over the country. We've lived multiple places in the US and people are so nice and welcoming. Right now 407 is under construction, but should be finished I think with in the year. PM if you would like more info...

We just moved here from Seattle in Feb and love it! I grew up in Southern Ca and was ready for some sun after six years in Wa. lol We actually just bought a house in Little Elm, but it's Frisco Isd. We also shopped for homes in Flower Mound Highland Village, Mckinney and Frisco. All those areas are wonderful, it just depends on what you are looking for. I'm also 35 and have two boys 2 and 4 so schools was a huge factor for us. If you want to send me a message I can tell you a whole lot more about what I found in these areas ( I could write a book here lol) I will say people are very friendly here and there is a ton of stuff to do with kids. that's funny i just realized we have the same names lol
