I am on the hunt for movies that both of my boys would like to watch together, and separate. We have a few barney, some sesame street, etc for the two year old. The 8 year old enjoys Diary of a Whimpy Kid, Harry Potter, etc. Those are not for the two year old!
But together, they love movies like FInding Nemo, Happy Feet, Mr. Poppers Penguins. I need some other ideas for movies. They both read a ton and look forward to our movie nights! Suggestions (again, looking for movies we can watch as a fam and also suggestions for age-appropriate movies!)
Sarah - exactly, we have that luxury with the baby because he doesn't know what is going on!
My boys - ages 3 & 6 - love the Beethoven movies! You can pick up a "Pooch Pack" at Target or Wal-Mart for about $15. It includes the first 5 Beethoven movies. I can't tell you how many times we've watched all of them. They also love pretty much any Disney movie (minus the princesses). Tonight we'll be watching Wreck-It Ralph for the first time, and I'm super-excited about that!
My kids are 5.5 years apart (ages 8 and 3). Together they love watching Pingu, pink panther, peep and the big wide world (yes, my 8 year old thinks it is funny!), the Madagascar movies, Inspector Gadget, Monsters vs Aliens, Despicable Me. My 8 year old love slapstick comedy. They both loved Babys Day Out and Home Alone. They both loved Babies (the documentary). They both love America's Funniest Home Videos (which they watch on youtube).

Look at what your local library's DVD selection. People often donate their older movies so its a good place to find the old classics. Best part is it's free!

I have a just-turned 2 year old and a 5.5 year old. Both are boys. I will say--most of the movies listed below we have done and they were a success. My 2 year olds absolute fave though? The Lorax! And there are a lot of elements to that movie that are definitely geared towards older kids. Both of my boys adore that movie.
Another really successful movie at my house is Hop and that is definitely a great one to watch right now since it's about the Easter Bunny. :)

my kids are 8 and 6 and they have been watching the sandlot for ever they love that movie. Brave is good, how to train your dragon. honestly my kids were probably watching more inappropriate movies when they were younger than I let my oldest one watch now because at 2 they dont comprehend the smoochy smoochy (granted nothing was too bad)
Treasure Planet, really any of the disney classic movies (Bambi, Dumbo, Beauty and the Beast, etc..)
Mary Poppins and Jungle Book. Maybe 101 Dalmatians.
Also try My Friend Totoro (really good for the 2yo) and maybe Ponyo.
Most "kid" movies have scary parts. Whether or not the 2yo can handle it all depends on your kiddo. I know a lot of 5 and 6 year olds who can't handle a lot of the movie suggestions made below.
I would think that the following would be good for both. I could be wrong. I have one 4.5 yr old boy. The movies below are some of his favorites. I try to stay away from "scary" movies - scary scenes or bad guys that are really mean

Be aware that almost all movies have a 'bad guy' and while you don't think the mean guy in Toy Story 2 is scary, your 2 yr old may have empathy for the toys/characters and get scared for them - scared because they may get hurt or get lost or never make it home to Andy. Just keep that kind of thing in mind. I didn't let my son watch Shrek, Monsters Inc, nor Alladin (scary sorcerer scenes) until he was 4 yrs old.
Anything Pixar - Finding Nemo, Up, Wall-E, Cars, Dispicable Me, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, (I don't think that one's Pixar...) Give your older child a quest - Every Pixar movie has something in it that is from a prior Pixar movie - In Finding Nemo there was a Buzz Lightyear toy on the floor of the Dentist office waiting room. Bribe him with a dollar or a treat if he finds it. My kids are too old (13 & 16) to want to go see Pixar flicks these days but they will still watch them on a DVD and roar with laughter...

My boys really like the Transformer movies, the Spiderman movies and Scooby Doo movies when they were little. They may not have understood the full story lines when they were two, but there was enough action to keep them interested.
