Just wondering what other moms think of this. There is a cartoon movie called Tangled (comedic Rupuzel) in 3D. What do you think if you brought your 2 yr old to it. I thought since it's in 3D that they are more likely to sit through it. Just your thoughts on this. Thanks

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you for all your replies. I was a bit hesitant myself that's why I asked to see what you guys did. For the most part she can sit down ok, but I think in reality she will not do well. I didn't really think about the glasses being too big. She will never keep them on the whole movie. I think I will wait until she gets a little older. Thanks again

I think a 2 year old is too young for a movie theatre, no matter what is playing. They just don't have the attention span to sit still for that long.

I jsut wanted to say that I took my (then) 3 and 4 year old to a 3-D movie and it didn't work very well. They couldn't keep the glasses on since they only come in one size and are too big for their little faces. Every since then I only take my kids to the regular 2-D movies.

There's no way my 22 month old would sit through a whole movie. We barely make it through Sesame Street or a video. I would like to see it, but we'll probably wait until video release. I avoid the theatre at this age too because of the sound, it's far too loud for little ears. We plan on waiting until age 4 or 5 for first movie....

I would recommend seeing it in 2D... most theaters offer a few "regular" showings each day. The kids don't like to keep the 3D glasses on (I actually get annoyed with them myself) and the picture looks all blurry and horrible without them. I think 3D is a colossal waste of money for most movies. Another good idea is that many theaters have a showing set aside each week for moms/dads to bring babies and little ones. Then the other theater goers understand that your child may get up and dance around or talk and it is acceptable.

My own personal thoughts are that if your there in the theater with a 2 year old I want to sit on the other side of the theater lol. 2 is just to young to sit thru a long movie. we went to see shrek a couple years ago. in the seats behind us was a young mom who had a little one about 2 or maybe even 2 and half along with another one who is older. the older one sat and watched mostly but the younger one couldn't sit still. walked back and forth behind the seats, knocking into our seats, kicking his legs, dropped his candy spilled his pop, had to pee wanted to "GO SEEEEEEE" whatever loudly throughout the show. mom kept saying to other one come on we will go and come back which created a howling I WANT TO STAYYYYY NOWWWWWW. I was pissed spent like 40 bucks to get in as I had son, and grandkids with me and missed half the show. So my vote is 2 is too young for the movies.

Most of the other responses are right on the money on this one. The big question I have for you is: why do you want to take him? Do you want him to see Tangled? Do you want him to experience a move theater? Do you want him to see a 3D movie? Do YOU want to see it and don't want to leave him with a sitter? What is your motivation for taking him?

Because no matter what your motivation is, you have to be prepared to grab him and leave if he won't be quiet/still. It is extremely rude to other patrons who have paid $ to enjoy the movie also, to have an antsy toddler (or one who won't shhhh, or one whose mom is opening a noisy plastic container of snacks every 5 minutes) a few rows down/over who is distracting from their movie enjoyment. Your 2 yr old is not likely to remember the experience by the time he is 7 or 8 yrs old anyway.
I would not take him. I would wait. If you want him to see the movie... rent it or get it on Netflix.

I didn't see anyone mention that this movie is PG. My kids only watch G movies. My 5 year old has tried a few PG rated ones and he gets too scared... so I have not even tried with my 2 year old. I know she would never sit through a movie in the theater unless it was one of her favorites that she has seen 100 times.

When we'd bring my youngest to the movies there were usually about 6 other children & we'd go to the least crowded showing. We'd sit where she'd have room to roam & not go upset if she watched or just tried out every seat at the theater! Enjoy!

I think she/he would sit better through it if it wasn't 3D. Although I've never personally experienced a 2 year old sitting through a 3D movie, I've heard that even at 3, 4 or 5 its hard to keep the glasses on the children at that age.

Otherwise, I took my daughter to Bolt for her first movie at a theater when she was 2 and she LOVED it, its still to this day one of her favorite movies.

DONT DO IT.
3D can seriously damage your child's vision. remember 3D video games they talked about in the 90s? what happened to them? research found out that they are damaging to our eyes, so they told the game producers they can NOT market 3D to children; especially those under 7.
what it does i guess is force you to use a "lazy eye" to view the 3D.
anyway, it can permenantly damage your child's eye. if you are ok with eye issues and possible surgery, go for it. otherwise, a 2 year old isnt going to care about a full length feature film, in a loud and ear damaging theater even if its 3D. besides, a 2 year old doesnt know real from fake either, and you dont know the content of the movie, who knows, it might scare the kid anyway.

so if you are asking my opinion, i just wouldnt do it. save your kid the trouble of having eye issues.

My DD went to her first movie in the theater a few months after she turned 2. I was working and my DH just decided to take her and then tell me about it afterwords. I was like, WHAT? But he said she did great, and sat the whole time. She's been to a few others since, including Toy Story 3 last June, which she did sit through, but we did not bother with the 3D version. It was more money and I doubt she would keep the 3D glasses on the whole time - I am happy that she just is able to stay put and not be disruptive in any way. I don't think the extra cost of the 3D movie is worth it.

I would agree that it just depends on your child. Mine did fine. My cousin took her son to the movies for the first time when he was 4 and he got freaked out because it was too dark and too loud. When we took my stepsons to Disney when they were 6 and 7 and every time there was a 3D experience, the 6 yo would keep the glasses on until there was an actual 3D effect, then he would whip them off - it was too much for him.

We just took my son to his first movie earlier this year and he was about 3 almost 4 years old. As for the 3D movie part - I'm still a little skeptical about taking my son to one because of the motion sickness you can get after awhile and 3D can be bothersome to people's eyes. I personally think it would be to overwhelming for a 2 yr old - but you know your own kiddo better than any of us moms on here.

My son's first 3d movie was at age 7 (avatar, saw it 3 times in the theatres... he *loved* that movie)... so I can't speak to early 3d. However, he started seeing movies in the theatre at age 2 and always had a blast.

We needed to keep it to the same types of movies he watched at home, though. Disney cartoons scared the bejeesus out of him (too black and white with the whole good v evil thing), so we didn't take him to Disney cartoons. But Pixar (Nemo, Cars, Monsters Inc., etc.) he loved, Harry Potter, Star Wars... all of those kind of PG - PG13 movies he just adored. Pirates of the Carribean we *didn't* take him to, but at age 3 I came home from work to find him just LAUGHING and laughing and laughing... he was watching it with dad and found the skeletons to be the funniest thing on the planet (Insides on their outsides!) so the next 2 we took him to. ((Yeah Pirates of the Carribean - hilarious. 101 Dalmations - nightmares for 3 months. Go figure.))

My toddler would hyperfocus on a movie and just be RAPT through the entire thing (at home or a theatre for up to 3.5 hours), ditto ballets, plays, operettas, any kind of preforming art. Other toddlers can't take more than 15-20 minutes. It's really a child by child kind of thing.

To know: There are TWO kinds of 3d movies. IMAX and Real3D/Disney3d. We absolutely *cannot* do IMAX 3d on a regular screen (instead of a dome screen... imax 3d on a dome screen is fine, but we've only got one giant golf ball style theatre in the city and it's a pain to get to so we don't go that often). On a regular screen the image fades out around the edges and gives our son headaches and just annoys me no end... my eyes keep trying to "focus" the blurry bits around the edges.

As others have said, not only is a theatre too loud for little ears (sometimes it even hurts my ears!), but 3D without glasses is blurry and a headache in the making for a 2 year old. My two oldest were not truely ready for a theatre movie until closer to 3.

That said, if your child will keep the glasses on, let you put cotton in his ears to muffle some of the loud noises and you take him to a matinee so that running around if bored isn't really an issue, I say go and see what happens.

I took my son to see Kung Fu Panda when he was two. It was his first movie and my hubby and I both went(mainly cuz I was a little nervous to go on my own) We went to the first showing in the middle of the week just in case he acted up.
He sat in a booster seat and we had to pin the seat down because he wasnt heavy enough to keep it down himself. He went through periods on being interested and not so interested but all in all we had a really good time.
I would try it.

I, too, think it depends on the child. 3D may or may not make them more interested. (The glasses may just annoy them.) If you think she is up for it, give it a try. Just be prepared to take her out if you find she can't handle it or needs a break for her sake, your sake, and the sake of the other movie patrons. Good luck!

I would suggest going to see the 2D version. At 2 they're probably not going to keep the glasses on, plus (at least around here) 3D is extra. We've taken both our girls to movies since they were little and they always sit through with little to no problem. My suggestion is to go to an early showing on a weekday. Get some snacks to keep their hands occupied. It all depends on the temperment of your child though. If your child is the kind that goes 100 miles an hour all day, then the movie theater isn't the place for them. If your child can sit calmly at home, then it might be worth a shot. Just remember movies are LOUD and the screen is HUGE. It can be really overwhelming at first. Also, be prepared to leave. Call around and see if there are any theaters that will give you a refund if you have to leave. Some will as long as it's not too far into the movie. Others will give you a gift certificate to use on future tickets. Make sure your toddler understands what's going to happen and what's expected of them.

My daughter had no interest in wearing the 3D glasses when we took her to see the Toy Story 3D double feature. We got through one of the two movies but she was 3 at the time. Our theater had booster seats for the little ones so they could see the screen. It all depends on how active your child is. My oldest was petrified of 3D when we went to Disney and til this day will not use the glasses lol!

I have a 3 year old and I know she would not sit through an entire movie. She just doesn't have the attention span yet. My niece is now 5 and she didn't sit through a movie until she was 4. Actually, I don't know any children who would happily sit through a movie at age 2 but I am sure they exist somewhere out there....I guess all you can do is try but be prepared to leave halfway through (so if you are taking older children as well you might end up with cranky little ones).

I would be careful with really young kids and 3D. Some of them love it, but a lot of them do not! My 4 year old doesn't like it at all. The movie theater we usually go to FINALLY got child-sized 3D glasses, but after two tries w/ 3D movies and the extra charge, we decided they weren't worth it for him (now for us -YES!). I've noticed many really young kids in the same films who are frightened and who don't like the glasses (and it's not like old 3D -if you remove the glasses for these -the picture is very blurry). We took my now 4 year old to his first movie when he was 2. It was Madagascar, and he loved it. I think you just have to know your kid and how likely he or she is to sit still for 60 -90 minutes. You have to be prepared to walk out and sometimes leave as well. If this is your child's first movie experience, you may want to try a non-3D movie for kids first. The theater experience can be very overwhelming for them -VERY loud (far louder than home and tv), in public but dark, HUGE picture, etc.

Well it just depends on your kid. At about 2 1/2 I took my daughter to a 3D movie and she loved it! did great. But she also would watch movies at home. Does your child like watching movies or most of a movie at home? I think the 3D helped plus we got her popcorn which she loved. And I don't know about your movie theater but when we took her to the movies she was still considered a baby so she was free. I thought if we have to leave early at least I didn't have to pay for her.

I can only give you my situation.
My son is 5. Last year his brother, my younger son, and I all went to a 3D movie (under the sea at our science center). My older son (7 at the time) LOVED it, was really intrigued by it. My younger son, 4 at the time, absolutely hated it. He didn't want to wear the glasses, he said that it gave him a headache, and he kept them off most of the movie. He fidgeted a lot, and the movie was only 45 minutes, and then when we left he had a headache.
So, in my opinion the 3D actually made it worse for us!

My dd is almost 2 and there is NO way I would take her to a movie in a theater. She LOVED 8 Below, but cannot sit still for over an hour in a strange new place. She would HAVE to explore. I don't mind her curiosity but there is a place and time for it. I don't believe my dd is ready for that experience just yet. I am looking forward to her being able to go or to even watch movies at home. She loved the 8 Below movie I think due to the fact that she saw a real live husky the previous day at her Great Grandpa's house. :-) She was only an infant and watched 3/4 of it before passing out. I was amazed.
Your toddler might be ready for it though. I would just sit on an aisle near the exit so that if the kid isn't ready that you can make a quick, easy, and hopefully quiet exit. Good luck and let us know how it goes. :-)
