The pest love my son; he's 20 months. I hate using OFF every day, and they still bite his face or ears. Know of anything that works and doesn't have a caution warning on it?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I bought BERT'S BEES a herbal insect repellent. 70% Soybean oil, 25% Eucalyptus oil, and 5% lemongrass oil. It cost 7.99 at a health food store. It works great. I even cut the oil by adding it to a small bottle of baby lotion. It still works great. My son fusses for about 5 seconds about the smell of the eucalpytus, which settles down very quickly. It leaves a lite lemon scent. Best of all there is no safty warning, and its never been tested on animals.

Avon carries a great product - Skin So Soft with Picaridin (an alternative to DEET). They also have Insect Repellent plus sunscreen that is convenient. Right now they are having a sale, 2 for $12 (I just bought some :-) Here is a link:

Hope this helps,

Hi D.-
I have a three year old nephew that is highly allergic to most any bug repellent. We tried Avon's Skin So Soft Bug Guard Plus Insect repellent Lotion and has a SPF 30 as well & it works great! Even repells ants. Mabe it would be worth a try for you.

I've been told by several parents that you can use a lotion called Skin So Soft by Avon and that it works great as an insect repellent. It's certainly worth a try. I think you can probaly go to Avon.com and order some. Let me know how it works out for you.

huh you funny...need a maid
ok, my daughter 25 months old. when she gets bitten by mosquitoes the bumps are red and swalloen for weeks. i don't use any kind of repellent. i discussed it with her ped. and he said no repellent, but just watch out if there are mosquitos when you take her outside. so now for example if there isn't any wind i know the bugs are partying in the yard so i don't take her out unless i have to. if i do, then i put very thin long pants and long sleeves shirt. at least that way her hands and legs are protected. but again, she gets bitten all the time and except for putting calamine lotion afterwards i don't use anything. i forgot to say the ped. said she hasn't developed her immute system yet that's why she reacts badly to bites. so in time this will get corrected. good luck

Have you tried Skin so soft (Avon)?
You may want to dilute with water; it's got a very strong fragrance, but it does work fairly well...

Hi, there,

There are a few great natural pest repellents out there that are much safer for your baby than DEET.

You can start with the OFF Botanicals series. They are derived from lemon-eucalyptus oil and while they're not great for "deep woods" hiking, they do well to keep the skeeters off when playing outside.

Also, you might want to check out NeemAura, Swamp Buddy, or Mad Mike's Anti-Bug Brew. All of these have worked well for us.

And, for after the bite, Young Living's Purification blend essential oil takes the sting out.

H.

I too have used the dryer sheets to repel insects. I've found that the more expensive brands work better than store brands. So it's Downey for us and it works. My mom uses them too when she rides her horse to keep the horse flies from biting her. (I also cleared this with our pediatrician) GOOD LUCK :)

Hi D.,

There is an all natural - deet free mosquito wipe that works great on kids. The product is called Wipe-eeze and is made in S. Africa (mosquito heaven) and you can get at the Enchanted Cottage in the Historic District of Longwood. The product is Citronella Based and easy to apply. You can also find it in mail order catalogs or in health food stores. Locally, I know it is sold at the Enchanted Cottage.

Thanks,

This is going to sound strange, but a CVS Pharmacist told me to try a "dryer sheet" (not used). She swore by it and I used it on the twins and have never had any problems with them being bit. I'm a mosquito attracting momma and I've even used it and works like a charm!!! With using the dryer sheet, lightly rub your face or his with it...use it on your face after you have used it on your arms or legs...doesn't tend to feel like you have rubbed the skin off your face. I use two for the kids and usually three for me and DH.
Also, Avon's Skin So Soft works as well.
Hope that helps!
Take care,
God Bless,

I use fabric softner sheets (unused) and rub it on arms, legs and neck and then tie it on my belt loop. Works great for short periods of time and reapply every 30-45 minutes or so. Smells great too.

You want to use anything with deet in it as that is what will repel the best. Also if this is mainly in your yard, know that you can call the county mosquito control ###-###-####) and report your problem and they will come out, investigate and treat if necessary. Here is the website as well http://www.pinellascounty.org/PublicWorks/Div_Highway-Mos...

Some good rules of thumb are to check your yard for any standing water, mosquitos can lay eggs in just a capful of water, so look for any rain catchers in your yard.

I also have to spray my little one down every day, so I have called the county and I have also picked up some citronella plants (available at walmart, lowes, home depot) and started planting them around my yard.

Good luck.

Hello D. B., From my experience, AVON has several great mosquito repellents. I sold AVON for 21 years and have always trusted the safety of their products. The information that I read about OFF is there are harmful chemicals in that product, especially to children. In my opinion I would discontinue using OFF.

I have same problem with my little guy. We live on a lake so misquitos are a constant problem. We use Avon's "Skin So Soft". I keep it in the shower and we all put a little on almost every morning - espeically when we are going to be outside. I dont particularly care for the smell, but I guess thats why it works so well. I have a 17 month old daughter. I was faced w/ the same problem (there are a lot of mosquitos around where we live). I talked w/ our pediatrician and she said that I should only use DEET free repellant, and the best one to use are the Deet Free Insect Repellent Lotions from AVON. I ordered two bottles, and they work great! The mosquitos do not bite her, the lotion doesn't smell bad, and I don't have to worry about using it daily since it's DEET free. So, I would highly recommend this. Good Luck :-)
