Mosquito Bites? - Royal Oak,MI

My daughter has sensitive skin and mosquitos seem to love her. Anytime she is bit, the bite lasts for weeks and she is miserable for days. She got bit last night (no other kids did!) about 8 times and just keeps walking around the house crying. I've tried giving her hydrocortisone cream and putting aloe on it. Any better tips??

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone! I went and got the Benedryl Spray and gave her it orally too. The spray was awesome and made it stop hurting. It can only be used a couple times a day, so I also used the baking soda paste. This afternoon they are barely visable! Crazy because the marks usually last for weeks with her! Thanks so much for the advice! Hope this helps others too. :)

Hi A., I use acne fighting astringent with 2% salicylic acid. Takes away the itch almost instantly and the swelling goes away quickly as well.

I dont know if it works but before she goes out rub her w a dryer sheet. I know ppl who say it works without the harsh smell of off. Some kids are just better tasting and get bit no matter what but Good luck.

Get a big bottle of Listerine and a good spray bottle. Spray around where your daughter plays. It's supposed to be excellent against mosquitoes.

At Better Health/Whole Foods, there are topicals you can use. One is called SssstingStop. There's also Florasone to keep the itching down. Burt's Bees ointment in a little round green tin, is also good for topical use on bites.

This may sound crazy, but-Roll on antiperspirant/deodorant! I read the tip somewhere, and my daughter gets huge welts that last a long time from mosquitos, but when she gets bit now-she puts the deodorant on asap, and the bite and welt is all but gone in minutes. This works 90% of the time-there have only been a couple that did not respond. Good luck!

We use either Afterbite or BiteMD. Just pick it up anywhere, Cvs, meijer, etc.

Vitamin B-12 is said to produce a smell from your body that the mosquito's don't like. I don't know what the dosage would be, but it might work. Worth a try.

Mosquitos don't like humans who take vitamins. Try a vitamin with alot of Vitamin B in it. They hate it!

My daughter also seems to be the one the mosquitoes love. We have found that BiteMD (we prefer the original over the kid formula) helps with the itchiness along with oral benadryl. There is hope! I think she may be outgrowing this allergy as this summer is the first that we have not had to put her on steroids for a bite! Hope the same for you.

When I got eat'n alive out camping I put Band-aid brand anti-itch gel on them and it says it will be an immediate cooling relief and it was. I put it on my boys and it seems to help but they don't cry about the pain like your does so use the other advice 1st to see if they will work better. Good luck.

I'd take her to an allergy specialist but it sounds like, when this happens, you should use benedryl. She may eventually need allergy shots. Benedryl comes in a cream or gel, and also pills but maybe there's a liquid for little ones. Not sure. Ask your doctor.

We use a product called AfterBite. It's in a pen form and it smells like ammonia, which is prob. the primary ingredient. My kids ask for it when they get bitten.

Also, check out Snopes.com for the Listerine suggestion. It's a scam.

This sounds crazy, but put a fabric softener sheet in her pocket. Make sure some of it is exposed. It works everytime....and you don't have to spray chemicals on your baby....

A.,

If the deodorant doesn't work try making a paste of baking soda and water and put the paste on your daughter's bites. She will have to sit still for about 10 minutes, but the baking soda should take some of the pain and inflammation away.

I hope she is feeling better soon.

This may sound a bit strange...but I use hemorrhoid cream and I swear by it!! Just a dab will almost instantly take away the itching and reduce the swelling. Works great for bee/wasp stings as well! Added bonus...mix a small dab w/some facial moisturizer and it becomes a great remedy for puffy eyes/under-eye bags!!

They love my little boy too! And...leave my daughter alone, bug spray or not, go figure. :) A few weeks ago I put bug spray on both of my kids from the neck down while we were all outside. Again my daughter stayed bite free but my sons face and neck were covered in 18 bites! I felt horrible! We have him Benadryl and the bites looked better overnight. It's something I will keep in mind when this happens again.

Good luck and hang in there!

Hi A.,

My daughter (2 yrs old) is going through the exact same thing. She will go outside with her three older siblings (ages 3, 6 and 10) and she will be the only one, day or evening, that gets bit. The bites are really bothersome and I believe painful (she points at them and says "Ooooowie"). Her bites seem to ooze whether she scratches them or not.

Two things have helped us tremendously.
1. Skin So Soft by Avon. Truly does repel mosquitos.
2. Benadryl Spray for bites. The label fell off of my bottle so I cannot give you the exact name. However it's a small white pump bottle. You just spray one little spray on the bite and she feels relief within 30 seconds.

Watch for her bites to become extremely swolen and hot to the touch. We took my daughter to her pediatrician for a bite that did this and he put her on antibiotics for an infected bite.

Best of luck to you and your little one!

J. Rodriguez

My daughter is allergic. Her bites swell up bigger than a quarter and are hot to the touch. We use hydrocortisone for the itching (which helps), but the thing that helps the bite disappear is deoderant. I saw this recommended on the internet. I usually scoff at "home remedies", but I was desperate, so I tried it. It really works! I use the stick kind and just put some on my finger and rub it on the bite. The sooner you get to the bite, the better it seems to work. Maybe the drying ingredient in the deoderant helps draw out the venom.
