Hi Mamas
I am 10 weeks preggers with my second.
I have really bad morning sickness. It started at 6 weeks and is getting progressively worse.
It is now all day sickness.
I am so drained as I still have to continue with life,going to work etc.
Any suggestions to help ease it beside ginger as the thought of it makes me gag as I think I have overdosed on it LOL

Well this is what worked for me in the past, 1/2 a unisom and a B6 vitamin. also I started cutting my prenatals in half and would take half at lunch and half at bed. Breaking it up like that really really helped with my all day sickness. Like once I started doing that all my sickness was gone!

Milk and Shakes, Ritz Crackers and having a hard piece of Candy to suck on. Before you even get out of bed or sit up eat 3 ritz crackers and lay there for about 5 mins. Then start! I constantly ate ritz crackers every 30 mins so I wouldn't get an empty stomach (even when I got up a million times to pee in the middle of the night I'd eat 3 and lay back down).

I too was "all day sick" with my pregnancies. I would have Gingerale on the side of my bed or chilling in the fridge-that helped some. Also, pepermint tea, and for breakfast an orange that had been in the fridge. Cold things were soothing for me. Good luck to you, I hope that this passes quickly for you

The only thing that ever worked for me was salty potato chips. Definitely not the best, but it was all I tolerated going down and it definitely curbed my gag reflex. I also found that chewing minty gum sometimes helped, but not as good as my potato chips. I tried to switch between the two as to not go overboard on my chips LOL!!

I kept saltine crackers and water beside my bed, nibbling a bit before I actually got up and walked around helped. Also for when I was out and about I went No where without hard peppermint candies, like star light mints? For whatever reason sucking on peppermint held the nauseating feelings at bay, and if it didn't...well then at least I had a mint to suck on afterwards. I know the maternity shops sell preggy-pops that are to aid in not being nauseated, but I do not know if they really work or not. If it is Motion sickness from your equillibrium being thrown off...you can buy a special bracelet at Walgreens that helps with motion sickness.

You could try those "sea-sickness" bracelets... some people swear by them.

What helped the most for me was eating or drinking something RIGHT after I woke up in the morning, like a quick glass of milk or some crackers. The other thing that helped was switching my prenatal vitamins. I ordered prenatal gummy vitamins online after I discovered that the only vitamins I could keep down, day OR night were my daughters Gummy vitamins. (And I was well into my 2nd trimester already). I ordered them and haven't been morning sick since... and they don't make my mouth taste like rotten fish (yay!). I told my doctor at one of my visits and she was thrilled, because I guess vitamins really send a LOT of people to the toilet!

Of course there is a good chance that your morning sickness will miraculously disappear soon! In the meantime... drink plenty of wter and eat bland foods.

Acupuncture.

I had BAD morning sickness AND migraines, with both my pregnancies.
Per the suggestion of my OB/GYN, I got acupuncture.
It is the ONLY thing that helped me.
Got rid of it. Right then.
It just took 1/2 hour and it was very relaxing.
I walked out after and it was all gone.

I had it bad too. Try the Preggie pops. They are the only thing that helped me... Saltines help a lot of people too.

Avoid apples, and rice chex. They are the WORST things in the world to bring back up.

OH! I don't know why, but greasy fast food helped. Especially onion rings from Burger King. :)

Try the Unisom - it was the only thing that worked for me, made me sleepy, sure but at least I wasn't feeling nauseas all the time. I took one at bedtime and half a Unisom when I got up in the morning. It totally worked! And, it's safe, was recommended to me by a nurse midwife. The one day I didn't take a half a unisom in the morning I was puking by noon so I knew I had to keep it up, took it almost my entire pregnancy.

Seabands wrist bracelets really helped me. Granted, they didn't "cure" it, but they made it possible to go from lying on the sofa moaning for most of the day to being able to function somewhat! I basically felt carsick the entirety of both pregnancies, but the Seabands did help in the first trimester. Find them at any drugstore with the other motion sickness stuff like Dramamine. They're not pretty -but who cares?

I was told to keep a snack by the bed like saltines and stuff eat them before you get up. East them very slowly and stay in bed for about 20 minutes or so and it should help a bit. Don't let your stomach get empty, it contributes to the nausea in a big way. Good luck. This shall pass.

I have found that McDonald's fries and a little bit of Coke work really well for me. It's not healthy, but whatever works. Oddly enough, that's the same thing I use as a hangover cure. :) Feel better!

i feel you. i had it bad the first three mnths. i mean i had my blanket and pillow in the bathroom. thats where i basically lived. i lost 20lbs and lived off of ensure shakes which half the time came up anyway. until, my obgyn told me to take unisom. the sleeping pill. i would take half of a pill and feel great. a little tired, but it was better then puking up EVERYTHING i ate.
ask your dr about it. it helped for me.

I am at 14 weeks with my first and it is getting better. Here is what I have found- eating every 2-3 hours (small portions). If you're sick of saltines try animal crackers. My dr. told me Unisom with a B6 or just a benadryl. The benadryl is working for me right now because my allergies are acting up too, so I take one at bedtime. (both of these will probably make you drowsy). Peppermint gum or strong mints help between meals/ snacks. Pink lemonade or water with lemon- but not a lot when I eat. I can't stand any sweet drinks. I have a root beer every once in a while (it makes me burp- which makes me feel better, but isn't always pleasant for those around me). Hope these help!

lay's salt and vinegar chips!! yummy! when i was pregnant woth my son(5 years ago), lay's came out with these Li`mon chips and they helped sooooo much, but all of a sudden they disappeared so i switched to the salt and vinegar chips. it worked wonders! it think it was the salt? anyway congrats!

I drank peppermint tea with honey, ate watermelon, and sucked on peppermints. (Not the candy, REAL peppermint. Try altoids.) Those things helped a tiny bit. I eventually had to take Zofran (sp?), because I literally didn't stop puking.

The whole ginger thing made me gag too. That and saltines. Everyone shoved them practically down my throat and they were so dry it just made it worse.
What helped (but didn't cure) my morning sickness was vanilla or peppermint. Vanilla milkshakes, or peppermint hard candies. I tried the preggo pops, the lollipops and hard candy that is meant for morning sickness and they were ok, but peppermint worked better.
Later on in pregnancy (because I had it the whole time) smoothies helped too.

I've suffered from hyperemesis gravidarum with both of my pregnancies. With my first pregnancy, I lost 20 lbs in 2 months, and with my second (and current pregnancy) I lost close to 25 lbs in 2 months. I have a 2-year-old, and had to spend many weeks on bed rest due to my condition so I definitely can relate! Nothing worked for me, and I was literally only consuming jello and Pedialyte pops for weeks. I had to be hooked up to an IV a few times. Phenergan was initially prescribed to me by my OB, but it didn't help. The only thing that gave me any sort of relief was Zofran. I would definitely talk to your doctor about getting a prescription for your morning sickness if it is bad enough. Also, I'm not a big soda drinker, but I found that I was able to keep Coke down, which helped when I was severely dehydrated. I'm sorry you're going through this. All the food answers are great but I am sure make you gag just reading!

My doctor recomended (kind of a hippy doctor...even though I am very much not) these herbal pills called "Morning Sickness Magic" made by Mommy's Bliss. They have ginger in them, along with B6, rasberry and Folic acid...which are all good things. They take a couple days to start working but I swear they are like a MAGIC pill. Try them and let us know if they worked for you as well. I buy them at the health food stores, somewhere I dont shop except for these magic pills!

Congrats and just remember this will all be a far off memory in 9 short months! : - )

I had morning sickness all through my pregnancy even on the morning while I was in labor! The nurse freaked out. I asked "is it 7:15?"

My husband told the nurse "Oh do not worry, she does this every morning at this time."

I learned early on, that NOTHING helped me. So I finally realized to just brush my teeth, vomit, brush my teeth and go forward with the day I felt sooo much better.

I second the nibbling on something (crackers) BEFORE you get up (sit up in bed). Once you've nibbled a few crackers, then get up.

As the day goes on, make sure you never get hungry as that was a trigger for nausea - I would walk around with raw almonds in my pockets and nibble a few every hour.

Congratulations. This too shall pass!

Acupuncture and those motion sick bands you can get at walgreens helped me a ton!! Also, eat small meals every two hours--keeping your blood sugar up helps a lot. I kept dry cereal (typically cheerios) next to the bed to munch on in the middle of the night. Fruit leathers are good for that, too.

I agree with the Vitamin idea. I skipped prenatals and just took 2 Flintstone vitamins with a folic acid supplement. My dr said that was fine and my daughter is healthy.

Try bananas, they helped me a little.

Not sure if anyone mentioned this one or not, but Altoids often helped ease the nausea (not eliminate it) and kept be from running to a bathroom. I had the same experience with my 2nd...all day sickness...I ended up having to take Zofran occasionally.

Tell your doctor. I had the same problem with my first and my doctor gave me a tiny little pill to take and it worked wonders!!!!! It was totally safe for me and baby because my OB gave it to me. :)

I know you got a lot of responses, but no one said what i found out! morning sickness is technically low blood sugar so you need to eat something EVERY 2 to 3 hours. Find what your body will tolerate - what I found good was oranges and orange juice, fruity mentos, milk and cereal bars (cereal brands granola bar looking thing with a strip of white icing in the middle/conamon taost crunch, honey nut cheerios), a lot of my girlfriends said pasta but it wasn't for me, sucking on hard candy, popsicles.
ALSO take your prenatal vitamins at 3:00 pm everyday, BIG difference! And there is a perscription prenatal that is better with morning sickness, it's a big blue one, sorry can't remember the name!

I was in the same boat with my second, I even posted the same question. The best thing that helped me was drinking ICE water throughout the day, eating small meals all day and taking B6. Hope this helps, it does get better. I improved around 16 weeks. Good Luck.

Eat anything you are hungry for-if it's nachos-eat nachos-if it's oranges-eat them. Potatoes helped me a lot-and I was sick all day-everyday until about 12 or 13 wks-I couldn't even stand up straight. Feel better-you're probably almost there!

Try the soda cracker, even its not your plain one, even a veggie cracker. Even try GingerAle but be sure to take the bubbles out. Stir it with a spoon until it just settles or even have a can in your fridge (opened) and it will settle. Keep this by your bedside as well as having it at work. Buy the Ginger Ale that the cap screws on. In the evening take the top off, recap and take it to work with you. If you so called "morning sickness" however its all day sometimes the Dr. can give you a pill that you can take. I know I had to do this. I was sick 6mos out of 9mos. You might even try something that you crave, eat it whenever. Good luck my dear, been there done that. Hopefully it will reside soon!!

I think the trick is to try and eat something before you stand up , gross I know but I kept a couple of ginger snaps on my bedside table for the morning , it worked for a little while but from 12 weeks my sickness got a lot worse and there was nothing I could do about , I eventually worked out that eating/drinking too much dairy made it worse so I ended up cutting that out of my diet and it did help.

Hi B.,

My doctor told me and it helped to eat a cracker or two BEFORE I even got out of bed. So I kept some on my nightstand with a glass of water. It worked like a charm. He said it's because you have gone so long without anything and your hormones are raging, etc.

Both my pregnancies I had all day sickness from 6 weeks through about 18 weeks. For me, it was simply my body not liking the changing of the hcg hormones. Didn't matter if they were going up or down. Finally at 18 weeks is when they level out. I just kept trying to eat a little even though I wasn't hungry. Slept a lot. And did seem to respond to grapefruit juice, as another poster mentioned. I also would nibble on toast with chedder cheese on it. And the sea sick bands seemed to help some. Good luck! It should get some better after 12 weeks (at least the exhaustion did for mer).

I'm 10 weeks as well and in the same boat. I've been doing acupuncture and it's helped a lot. I wear magnets (from my acupunturist) similar to sea-bands on my wrists, she also gave me homeopathic pellets that I take that really help. She gave me ginger candy that I can't stomach anymore. I did find the preggie pop drops from motherhood maternity help. Other things that help are really cold things, so popsicles (orange and lime), lemon sorbet, cold fresh fruit (grapes, watermelon, cantelope), hot ginger tea (although getting hard to stomach again). I also can't do saltines anymore, had them at my bedside and I'd eat at bedtime and in the am, I have switched to animal crackers. I've also found a lot of small meals, so I eat about every hour to hour and a half. good luck and this too shall pass....or at least I keep telling myself that.

Poor you!

I also had insomnia, so would eat a cream cheese sandwich every night in the middle o the night. Somehow it helped. But I go really fat, hah! (now I'm really skinny with breastfeeding, so don't worry). With my first I snacked on raw almonds and sometimes raisins all day.

You could try smelling the peel of a whole lemon (scratch it a little first)? That helps with non-pregnancy nausea. I think it's a Greek cure.

It seems like an eternity, but it will pass. Hang in there!

I tried literally everything and still puke almost all nine months (of all three pregnancies). But, a prescription for Zofran helped a ton and I almost stopped throwing up completely when I was on it. The Unisom/B6 combo also worked really well, just made me sleepy and grouchy. Nothing else even touched it. Hope you feel better soon!

I know these will sound unconventional and probably not in the least appetizing but with my second I was sooo sick that I was willing to try anything.

Citric acid--it neutralizes the acid in your stomach. Grapefruit juice, lemon juice--the more acidic the better. Course then you will get heartburn and for that nibble on a piece of cheddar cheese.

And the really far out one--eat the peel and outside of cucumber slices, but not the part where the seeds are.

I agree with other moms: eat constantly. it helped me. or even just have something to suck on (peppermints? cough drops helped me, weird, I know) I found having something in my mouth helped to distract from the nausea. nothing seems to make it magically go away, so it's just a matter of getting through it. just find that something that makes it a "little" better and stick with it. also, just carbonated water helped me, I'd but a little lemon in it as well. good luck and hang in there! as we all know, it's worth it and it will get better!

Ginger tea helps a lot, but if you are suffering from Hypermesis than the normal stuff like eating crackers before you get out of bed, small meals, sucking on ginger chews, and the rest of the home made remedies. Are not going to help. I was prescribe the generic for zofran and even that didn't work. Finally, the doctor put me on promethazine which helped but kept me drowsy all day. If your provider tells you that he's worried about the amount of vomiting your doing because you have ketones in your urine then that may be a sign you need to be on meds and im sure the doc will prescribe. But, if its just the normal crappy morning sickness. I would go with the ginger tea route its a bit better than ginger ale cause it doesn't have all the sugar. 7up if you need to settle your tummy and burp.

Ginger! Seriously... it's been clinically proven to reduce morning sickness symptoms. Go to a natural food store and buy ginger candy, ginger syrup, ginger anything. You can probably find some stuff in a regular grocery store, but you need real ginger (not ginger flavor like in fake gingersnap cookies or Ginger-ale).

I got meds from the doc, but nothing helped. I had all day morning sickness my entire pregnancy! Don't eat if you're not hungry. If I wasn't hungry and ate something I would get sick immediately. Bnatal, i think that's the name, pops are sold at babies r us. They taste great and have the B vitamin that helps with morning sickness. Preggie pops made me sick. I hope you feel better soon!
