Morning Sickness - Old Forge, PA

This is my 3rd pregnancy and even though its the my kids are only 33 and 13 months, I can't remember if I had morning sickness like this before. I feel so absolutely nauseous in the mornings and I can't tell if eating helps or not. I feel as if my kids are missing out because mom doesn't feel like doing anything but laying around on the couch. I've brought a couple of toys from the toy room to the living room and have tried to read the kids books, but what about activities to help them burn off some energy? Does anyone have ideas on how to squelch the nausea or keep my kids active and interested until it goes away? Thanks.

I had terrible morning sickness with my kids. To get out of bed in the morning I would prepare the night before. I put a glass of ice water on my nightstand as well as a pack of crackers, a dish of ice water and a wash cloth. When I woke in the morning, I would dampen the washcloth and place in on my neck and/or forehead as I sipped the cold water and nibbled on crackers. Once I was up I would put on sea bands. They are wrist bands that have a button on them. You put them on with the button pressing on the inside of your wrist at a point that "controls" nausea. You can buy them at drugstores for around $10. They helped me function througout the day. I also ate foods that made me feel good - peanut butter sandwiches, potatoes, ice cream, popsicles. Snacking all day rather than eating meals also helped.

As far as activities to keep your kids active what about an indoor basketball hoop (little tykes, second step or use a hamper), sit n spin, chasing balls around, simon says, elefun (catch fabric butterflies in a net), playhut/tunnel (to crawl through), hullaballoo (immitate motions, learn colors, shapes).

Congratulations on your pregnancy!

I, too, have heard that citrus helps the nausea. Also, get out of bed SLOWLY in the morning. maybe try a cracker or two before you get out of bed, as an empty stomach definitely makes it worse. Good luck...hope, for your sake, that this passes soon.

Also, Hullabaloo is a great game that will entertain the kids for you for a while!

I have so much empathy for you. I had morning sickness for 4 months with my first pregnancy, but with my second I was sick for the entire 8-1/2 months. (Thank goodness he was born 2 weeks early!) I was just so useless, always sick, always run down. I'm sure the morning sickness started the first day that I was pregnant. My older son was 2 at the time, and saw me hovering over the toilet so often, that he would imitate me and pretend that he was vomiting into the toilet! Talk about confusing toilet training! LOL

I made every effort to keep hydrated, but I even liquids came back up if I drank more than a few sips at a time, so I always kept a water bottle and straw at the bedside. For some reason, Life cereal was a help to me in the morning. Each morning, hubby would bring me a small bowl of Life cereal. I'd have that and let it settle for about 15 minutes, and then I'd be able to get up and try to get through the day. It was rough! I had such a hard time keeping food down that I was almost admitted to the hospital several times. I laugh to remember the one window of time in which I felt good. It lasted about 3 hours in month 6. I ate 4 meatball sandwiches and they stayed down! But the nausea returned after that, and I was right back where I started. I gained only 11 pounds during that pregnancy (gained 40 after, tho!), and my son was 8 lbs, 2 ounces and 2 weeks early. Somehow he got the nutrition he needed. It was horrible, however, and I feel for you. Try nibbling and sipping, and just take it easy.

I found citrus especially lemons really helped with my morning sickness. I usually nauseous during meal time so I would suck on lemon wedges before, during, and after most meals most of my first trimester. Hope that helps.

Hi K.,
Morning sickness is the pits. I've had 8 children and I had morning sickness with them all. My one and only son was the worst. What worked for me was Gatorade. I can't stand Gatorade normally, but sipping it first thing in the morning before I got out of bed really helped. Then I'd nibble something salty like pretzels and keep sipping the Gatorade throughout the day. Don't guzzle anything, do small meals, do not let your stomach become empty if you can help it during the day. So nibble on pretzels, saltines, wheat crackers, etc. and sip either Gatorade or Powerade. Stick with flavors like lemonade or citrus unless there is a flavor you already prefer. With the summer heat, try to stay cool. If you think you are dehydrating at all get to your OB. I dehydrated with my one daughter over night. I had pain like I'd never had before! So be careful! Good luck, God Bless,
L.

I so feel for you. I was sick for the first trimester with my first son amd the whole time with my second. So amazing isn't it that some women don't get sick at all but others are sick the whole time. Sad to say but I probably would have had more kids if the pregnancies were a better experience. Some things that "kind of" helped:
1. Someone else mentioned Unisom and B6. These are the ingredients for a popluar morning sickness pill use in other countries but not approved by FDA here. The unisom (not gelcap but the other)works overnight to relax your stomach. It will also help you get a better sleep. I think I took this every night while pregnant and my boys are extremely healthy.
2. The seabands helped me some.
3. Take Flinstones instead of Prenatal.

As for entertaining the kids..do you have maybe a 10 year old girl in your neighborhood that you could hire as a "mothers helper" for a few hours a day? Girls that age love little kids and would be a lot cheaper than an older teen. Also, don't be afraid to let your 3 year old watch TV or videos while the other is napping. This will give you a chance to nap as well.

Good luck!

Hi K.,

Congratulations on your 3rd pregnancy!! I'm sorry to hear that you aren't feeling well. My suggestion would be to eat lots of small meals (don't ever let you stomach get empty) and try to spend as much time outside with the kids as possible. The fresh air will be good for you and for them. Perhaps there is a park you can go to where they can play and you can rest on a bench with some saltines!

Blueberry Hill Park on Nicholson Rd is nice because it is all fenced in so you don't have to watch the kids quite as carefully as they can't escape.

Hope you are feeling better soon!

If you're open to medication, please ask your doctor for Zofran. It's an anti-nausea drug that is safe to use during pregnancy (normally used for chemo patients). It's expensive, but hopefully your insurnace will cover it (I had to fight for it, but won). I lost 7 pounds in the first trimester and ended up in the hospital twice...so don't mess around with this especially in the summer when you could dehydrate more quickly. Good Luck!

Red Swedish Fish...I was nauseous alot with my first and the fish seemed to do the trick. I wasn't hungry but needed something in my mouth and alittle in the belly. The other thing that worked with both of my pregnancies was never letting myself get hungry...I snacked alot, if I got too hungry then the nausea took over and I didn't have an appetite and it got worse...hope this helps!

Altoids have a chocolate covered ginger flavor. They helped me A LOT during my pregnancy. Or while you are still laying in bed or on the sofa, have toast/plain bread next to you to eat before you get up. Stock up on ginger ale! I'm telling you, the stomach settling affects of ginger are fabulous!! If nothing works, try to remember...it's only a few months of feeling that way.

I was sick with all 3 of mine (the youngest is almost 3) and for #2 & 3 it was really hard because I had to be a mom while heaving in the toilet. Saltines, herbal tea, and flat pop helped me a little, but I was also the mom who laid on the couch and prayed that the TV would occupy the kids while my stomach churned. If you have a dress up trunk of play outfits that may occupy them enough for a while. You could help them get dressed, and then watch them parade around the living room. Just remember that the sickness is only temporary.

There is a product from Shaklee that helped my friend out when nothing else worked. It has peppermint & ginger in it and a couple other herbs. She tried them by themselves from the health food store and they didn't work but together they helped her out. It actually gives you a cooling feeling in your stomach like Nice tablets for your throat does. If you want to check it out go to: http://www.shaklee.net/dudinyak/product/20601. Good luck to you.

When I lived in Utah the nurse told me if it was really bad to buy some Unisom, (not the gelcaps but the regular kind) and B6 pills. I would consult a doctor first though before taking any pills. I have used B6 pills and they seemed to help allieviate some of it. I also split my prenatal in half and took half in the morning and half at night. The iron in it made me nausous so this helped. I also learned I couldnt have high iron breakfast cereal and juice (which increases the absorbtion of iron) as it made me sick. Eggs also from some reason would be horrible for my nauseua and crackers did little to releive my symptoms.
Remember your stomach is empty in the morning and that makes you feel worse. Getting a good breakfast can really help start the day right and eating as often as you can will ward off sickness.
If my stomach gets empty during the dy I immediately feel worse. I've also found that the first three months are not healthy eating for me bcuase I feel so sick! I just buy whatever food I feel like and eat it even if its horrible for you. I know once the nausea has passed I can go back to a healthy diet. It seems when I'm sick the foods I feel like dont make me as ill and help keep my stomach full. This in the past has meant MacDonalds fries, ice cream, burritos, spring rolls etc!
I've also wondered too if ginger would have made any difference too as its supposed to settle the stomach. Ginger ale only worked for me for a couple of weeks but I was wondering perhaps if someone could make you some gingerbread cookies or some gingerbread. Maybe nibbling that could help.
I feel your pain, I hope you find a good solution!

I know EXACTLY how you feel. I am 9.5 weeks with #3 and have been feeling miserable. I would just lay on the couch and let them play on the floor in front of me. My doctor prescribed a prenatal vitamin that is designed to help with the naussea and after about a week of taking it, it helped! I didn't really want to take a drug, so I like this alternative. It is much smaller than a regular prenatal, it does not have everything, but it's a whole lot better than being useless or throwing up. I've been on it a little over a week and I still feel mildly nausseous at times, but have not thrown up at all and even can eat small meals. It's worth checking out. Let me know if you need the name of it.

Hi K.!
I was fine with my daughter, and this time it's a boy...and I was so sick for the first like 5 months! I'm now due in 8 weeks, and am feeling good! Anyways, the one thing that the doctors told em to do was to stop taking your prenatal vitamins, as that can cause it to worsen. I stoped taking those, and started eating toast with little butter or even pnut butter with my daughter in the morning. That seemed to help a little bit too! As for activities for the 2 you already have, to burn energy, turn on some music and let them dance or a show that they can be interactive with! That's what we do when we're not feeling well. The music thing seems to work for us!
Good Luck, and just remember that it will eventually pass!!!

I feel your pain!! I had a VERY active 4 yr old when I was pregnant with my second, in the summer also. The suggestions about indoor activities are really good. I used these my self. One thing that saved me was family members!! I don't know your situation, but if someone could take your kids to the park or even out in your yard for an hour or two. Trust me, they would be happy to help!! Think of it this way.. it's not forever. You just have to get over this part! The most important thing is that you take care of yourself!!! Your kids need a healthy and happy mom. Good Luck and take care!!

Aloe Juice is great for Nausea. Drink 2oz every am or when you feel sick. Saltines are good too before you get out of bed. For the kids, give them a doctor's kit and tell them when Mommy is feeling sick, they can take care of her...cover her with a blanket, take her temperature...etc...also give them dolls to dr. too.
Hope the queeziness passes soon.
go to www.healthmadesimple.net and click on Ultimate Aloe. I drink pomegranate flavor...
Aloe juice is also good for colic, eczema, heart burn...you name it.

Watermelon, anything citrus to the point of sour (I kept Sour Patch Kids at my desk at work), and bread (carbs). Unfortunately I gained 46 lbs. with my first, but never threw up and made it through 9 months of running a dept before becoming a SAHM.

I also second the Mother's Helped - I have one now just to kept my 16 month old busy while I do jobs I can't get done with her alone (clean things requiring ladders, organize paperwork in the office, etc.). We do $5 for 2 hours and her "buddy" is 12. We told the "buddy" we'd upgrade her to babysitting at $5 an hour when she's a little bit older:)

I'm nervous when we try again, but good luck to you!

Seabands....they are very helpful.
I am in the first trimester of my second preg, I have a one year old at home. This time it is much worse than last time. Since I got the seabands I have been feeling MUCH better. this morning i managed to vacuum the first floor & play with my son. (Last week - before seabands- the thought of getting off the couch made me nauseous).
Also, I keep a bag of trail mix (our recipe: honey nut cheerios, mixed nuts, craisins, peanut butter m&m's) next to my bed. Just before I lay down to go to sleep I eat as much as I can manage. Then if I wake up to go to the bathroom during the night, I eat as much as I can again. In the morning before getting out of bed I again eat as much as possible. This seems to be helping a lot. I don't run as empty in the mornings as I used to. Eating is very important. Its best to eat every 2-3hours, before you feel hungry (but don't eat a lot). If you start feeling hungry at any time during the day, drop what you are doing & EAT immediately. Otherwise you will get nauseous very quickly. Also, eat SLOWLY & stay as calm & relaxed as possible. You feel good on the couch b/c you can relax there. Stress makes naseou worse. Consider simple stretching or breathing exercises during the day to relieve stress. Since I started doing all these things myself, I've felt much better.
One more thing...my son seems happier when I lay on the floor as opposed to the couch. He has a great time crawling around & over me. I don't know if your 33 mo old would be entertained by this, but he may be.
Good luck. I hope some of this helps.

ugh I feel for you. I was like this on my last pregnancy. NOTHING worked. I tried everything from saltines to suppositories. I was hospitalized once and had to get an IV. I threw up all day for 5 months. I lost 10 pounds before the 5th month and the nausea started to subside. Then I gained 20 lol I'm pregnant again and this time around I'm eating toast in the AM and sipping water. I'm still nausous but I'm hoping it doesn't get as bad. So far, so good. *knock on wood*. Hopefully these things mentioned by others can work for you. My doctor gave me real organic ginger and it was SO nasty the taste made it worse. This time around the dr. gave me a prenatal with extra B6 to fight the nausea and samples of some lollipops. That didn't help last time either lol but maybe it will work for you!
What I DID notice last time, is I stopped taking my prenatal vitamin and switched to flinstones vitamins and thats when the nausea went away. Not sure if it was just timing or the vitamin, but the dr said she had to do that as well. This time the vitamin made me more nausous, so the next day I took the flinstones and wasn't as bad.... so maybe try that, but talk to your Dr. first!! Good luck!

You poor thing. I had morning sickness with both of my pregnancies and the advice I did not want to hear was what worked best: Get up. Do not lay down and give in because it only makes it worse. I must admit it was hard at first, but really helped after a few days. I also stopped getting awful headaches when I moved around. I found that I drank more and even tolerated a little bit of food (mostly savoury crackers) because my body needed it. I went to bed feeling worn out, but rested better, which also helps. Hope this helps. Good luck.

Aside from frequently snacking so your stomach acid doesn't go nuts and make you feel sick, I use peppermints frequently. I just got over my morning sickness with #2 a couple of weeks ago (I'm 16 weeks along) and I had peppermints stashed everywhere. Try to take your prenatal vitamin right before you go to bed with a snack, because sometimes the iron makes you nauseated.

As for the activities, I'm not sure what to suggest because my 3-year old seems content playing with things on his own or watching PBS kids. Good luck!
