Hello. I am about 8 weeks pregnant and I was just wondering if anyone had any suggestions for feeling better and getting rid of morning sickness?? I was really sick with my first son, but I had no one else to take care of so it wasn't that bad. Now that I have my son to take care of, it is harder to be sick! Any suggestions???

What can I do next?

oh hun, I know how you feel- I was so sick for the first 4-5 months of pregnancy they had to put me on an IV to get some fluids back in me. I couldn't even eat saltines! Some things that sort of helped me get throught the day were:
Wintergreen LifeSavers- they're nice and strong and take away the nauseous taste
Candied Ginger- the ginger helps with sickness, and the sugar coating takes away some of the bitterness- small bites though!
Preggie Pops- didn't help much, but tasted pretty good
Ice chips- get some fluid in you and takes away the sick taste
Whole Fruit Pops- same as ice chips, but taste good and have some health benefits
I also got a couple anti-nausea presciptions from my OB-GYN, but I tried to take them only as absolutely needed.

I hope this helps- I really feel for you. I think the only thing I kept down those first few months was a single hot dog once. It sucks. Good Luck!

As someone else suggested sea bands are awesome they will be tight after a while but they work. I even use w/my 2 year old, everytime we are driving he throws up, after the sea bands it's heaven!! Ha!!
But for me, my main problem is when i'm brushing my teeth in the morning..i'm not joking the only way i don't vomit is by smelling at the same time rubbing alcohol! It works for me! Just a quick smell! And when i'm driving i drink lots of water and eat a tic-tac (orange) and it helps me...good luck!

First stop is to your local maternity store ~ Many of them now carry Preggie Pops which are full of vitamin C and I have had many, many friends RAVE about how much it helped reduce their morning sickness.

I had morning sickness with both my boys, the entire pregnancy! I found out part of what was making me sick was my prenatal vitamin. I started cutting it in half and taking the first half 30 min. after I ate in the morning and the other half 30 min. after I ate lunch or dinner. That helped a lot!! Also, I made sure I always had a little food in my stomache, not too much, not too little. I hope it gets better!

Hi M.,
Someone mentioned this previously, but I want to confirm that SEA Bands are your best bet. I tried all the "oral" things (ginger, Preggi-pops, crackers, etc.) and nothing worked to eliminate my nausea. But then I heard about SEA bands and went out and bought them right away. They are inexpensive and you can get them at almost any drug, discount or grocery store in the section where they sell the Dramamine. They are wristbands with a litte ball inside that puts pressure on a certian nerve in between the tendons on your wrist. The pressure on the nerve sends a signal to your brain to eliminate the nausea. I was skeptical at first, but felt so awful I was willing to try anything, and they REALLY worked!

Hi M.,

There are several things that can help. Ginger is incredibly good. They sell ginger capsules at the health food store. Also the Sea bands mentioned before are great. Make sure you follow the instructions exactly because if they are off one little bit they don't work.

Also confirm that your prenatal vitamin is absorbing. The reason ladies get nauseous is because the baby is taking ALL the nutrition and the nausea is similar to when you get nauseous because you haven't eaten. Just because a vitamin is "high quality" doesn't mean your body is absorbing it. If you're not sure, let me know.

God bless and Congratulations!

The best way to prevent "morning" sickness (which can go on all day), is to never let your stomach become completely empty. You may have to eat smaller meals more frequently or eat a nighttime snack to accomplish this. It is also wise to eat whatever will "stay down"; For some people, this may be something starchy but for others it may be something fried, etc.. Drinks are very important to consume, especially if you are not able to eat. Herbal teas like mint, ginger or chamomile work really well. In some cases, carbonated sodas (especially ginger ale) work wonders. What actually works is what actually works for you. Sometimes nothing helps but the coming of the second trimester of your pregnancy. Hang in there!

I feel your pain M.. I am now 30 weeks pregnant and I too have a 3 yr old. My Hyperemesis Gravidium was so bad I was in and out of the ER several times and lost 10 lbs in the first 3 months. I would have lost more if not for drinking hi calorie drinks whenever I was not sick.

The only suggestions I have is to laydown as much as you can. At 3 1/2 our kids are able to take care of themselves much more and I would lay on the couch as much as possible only getting up to make food, get things for him, go to the bathroom, etc... If you have to work that makes it very hard. When he naps, YOU MUST NAP or you will not make it. I would also try to wake before he did because it would take me a good hour before I could move without vomiting violently. I would lay in bed doing my breathing excercises and calming my stomach, then would get something in my stomach. For me milk worked very well, but most people it is crackers and soda water or something like that. The cinnamon drops you get a cracker barrell were my life saver. I sucked on those 24 hours a day, they really helped me when I had to be out and about, I mean it is nearly impossible to stay home all the time. Lastly if you are having severe nausea please talk to your OB, my immediately prescribed me Zofran, just like with my first son, and it helps tremendously.

I did fine with Cherios & lots of rest. However, I've had friends who had to resort to Zofran (an Rx drug) but it worked. Please talk to your OB/Gyn.....

Sea Bands are absolutely FABULOUS. They got me through 3 pregnancies. They are bands that go on both your wrists and use pressure points to soothe nausea. Not fashionable, but they eased the nausea enough that I could function. Hope it helps you.

Congratulations on your pregnancy!

Wish you well,
S.

Hi M., now this is only my opinion and everyone has one of those, but...... I read a couple of good ideas, but you have to use whats going to work for you. I was sick though out my entire pregnancy with my second son it got so bad that I also was vomiting up the lining of my stomach, and I didn't know about all of the remedies that I read on your page, but what worked for me was eating a saltine cracker b-4 I ate anything else. That helped me to keep down everything including the water that I would vomit up. I hope that one of these ideas work for you and congrats on the pregnancy. I really hope it's smoothe sailing from here.

Vitamin B6. Take it daily, regularly. Wait to take your pre-natal vitamin until after you eat your dinner in the evening. That big pill on a fairly empty stomach will make anyone queasy.
I heard ginger products (real ginger and not the stuff sold as ginger ale), but it made me even more nauseas.
Peppermint helped me a little. Sip on the tea. Suck on a mint. Light a peppermint candle, etc. And citrus smell helped.
I hope you find something that works for you. The B6 seriously helped me immensely. I wasn't able to do anything but lay on the couch or run to the bathroom before I started taking it. Good luck!

Hi. Been there. While I mostly threw up stomach acid first thing every morning- but rarely any actual food or at any other times of day (this went on for the entire 40 weeks), the nausea lasted 24/7 for the entire 40 weeks. I ended up taking the Zofran I saw someone else mention - and it helped me be able to function. I also would suck on plain old lemon drops. It helped get rid of that nagging "taste" that was in my mouth all the time. Avoiding caffeine was a must for me (I could even taste it I was so sensitive to it). But don't be afraid to try odd things. Different things work for different people. I drank choc. milk, then sipped on pink grapefruit juice... and that helped me for the first few hours of the day. I resorted to LOTS of orange drinks (some are not caffeinated) and the strong flavor helped with that "taste" too. Also, eating apples sometimes helped. I tried the sea-bands, but I couldn't tell much difference, and they were very uncomfortable to me. After a few weeks with not enough difference to make it worth the discomfort, I quit with them.
I hope yours only lasts a few weeks... Hope you're feeling better soon!

M.,

I had very bad morning sickness with everything I ate. I had it real bad in the morning as soon as I would wake up I had to run to the bathroom. The thing that really helped me was my doctor told me to make sure I was drinking plenty of liquids. So when I would wake up in the middle of the night for the nightly bathroom run I would get a class of juice. That helped alot. Sometimes I would still have my morning sickness but even those little times was alot easier then before. Congratulations!

Hello M.,

I also had real bad morning sickness with my pregnancies. I found that nothing made it feel absolutely better, however, a doctor for my first pregnancy gave me a concoction that did the most good. He gave me some nausea pills and told me 30 min prior to getting out of bed to take the pill, eat some crackers & drink a soda. I always still threw up as soon as my feet hit the ground, but I always felt better longer after the concoction.

Just remember the more you drink, the easier it is on your body to throw up. It's cooler for your throat & less strenuous than dry heaves. So hydrate hydrate hydrate!!!!!

M.,

I was terribly sick with all four of my kids. The only thing that ever helped was Zophran, Dr. Prescribed. Its one of the best ones that they give to chemo patients to help with nausea and sickness. It melts on your tongue and works fast. I tried crackers, and every other food item known to man, but when it came down to it, nothing else (even other prescriptions) really helped like the Zophran did. Hope this helps!

You've already gotten great advice! Ginger and eating constantly is what worked for both my pregnancies. I found that ginger ale, which I normally NEVER drink, worked really well. I should say that I HATE soda, but for some reason it works for nausea to have fizzy drinks. If you don't want sugar, GuS, which stands for "Grown Up Soda" is a great choice. If you don't mind sugar, Jones Soda is all-natural and used to make a ginger ale. Just stay away from the sugar-free Ginger Ales because sugar alternatives are not good for pregnant mommies!

I never had morning sickness with my first so this time it was a shock to feel green day and night! Couple of odd things that really helped me was lemonheads (the sour really helped calm the nausea and gagging) and I bought Tazo chai tea mix from the grocery store. I mixed 2 oz with 2 oz of warm milk and sipped on it. And such a small amount had almost no caffiene. It was very soothing to my tummy. Also the normal sprite, ginger ale, crackers.

hi there---Preggie Pops helped me (Miracles Maternity Boutique in Gainesville) and eating sour things tended to help--I lived on the frozen Italian Ice Cups I found at Publix. Also eating something-anything-every 1 1/2-2 hours helps keep your tummy from that horrible "empty pit" feeling...and my Dr. gave me a great tip==eat something before you drink something--drinking liquid on an empty, nauseous stomach makes it worse....hope these help!

Hi M....congrats on the new little one! Everyone's pregnancies and remedies are different...I never actually got 'sick', but I was nauseated all day, every day until week 12! I have two words...'Comfort Food'...(mashed potatoes, pasta, mac & cheese, rice, chicken & dumplings, etc.). Ginger Ale did not really help as it has very little natural ginger...but Ginger Snaps seemed to take the edge off...dried aprictos (great). Also, keeping a little something in your tummy all the time (no empty stomachs).
Anyhow...that is my two cents...keep trying different things, you'll find your magic combo. Just remember, it's only for a few more weeks!
Let me know how you're doing!

I had horrible morning sickness with my first too...and I tried everything! Nothing totally works but a couple of things that helped were--1. keeping crackers by the bed and eating just a couple before i got out of bed in the morning.
2. Ginger--ginger tea especially (I couldn't stomach the crystallized ginger). Again nothing took it away except hitting weeks 14-15, but these helped some. Oh and my Dr. told me to stop takinng the prenatals until the morning sickness went away since the iron in them can really upset your stomach.
I also tried all the B vitamins, the motion sickness wrist bands, just about anything I could and none of those worked.
My son is now 2 1/2 and I'm wondering too how I will handle getting pg and taking care of him,but I figure, I just will--you know?

Hi M.,

We M.'s need to stick together. Two things worked for me with morning sickness. The thing that absolutely worked the best was getting a Mcdonalds icecream cone. Strange I know but that was the only sure fire way to stop the sickness. The other way that worked most of the time was to keep crackers by my bed and eat a couple of crackers before I even got out of bed in the morning.

Good Luck! Hope you feel better soon.
