I am in my seventh week of pregnancy and have just been hit with a bit of morning sickness....only it lasts all day. I can deal with it while I'm at home, but I work full time and need to be able to work at my full potential. Does anyone have any suggestions for getting rid of nausea?

What can I do next?

Thank you to all who responded. It seemed the most popular response was the sea bands. I did get them and do feel better. I'm looking forward to the rest of this pregnancy and the blessing that comes in the end.

I always kept cheerios and saltines with me when I was pregnant and nibbled on them as needed because an empty stomach can bring on nausea. Clear fruit juices and ginger ale helped too. One positive note about morning sickness that my doctor told me was that it's a sign that the baby is developing, which is good. Hang in there!

I understand how you feel!

There is a WONDERFUL medication called ZOFRAN. It is the only med. approved for sickness during pregnancy and has no side effects. It helped me tremendously and was my lifesaver!! I tried the sea bands and they didn't offer me any relief but they might help you. Ask your OBGYN about ZOFRAN. You'll thank me:))))))

I had night sickness with my first prego. My sec nothing and then with my third prego i have day sickness that would get worse as the night goes on. There are home remedies, eat small meals, Keep a log of what foods that u eat that might make the feeling feel stronger. Do some search online. Sometimes you can come across those websites that talk about something that you can get in the store. Or try peppermint. Or sometimes a cup of mint tea. With some it does pass by the end of the third mnth. HAng in there. Best of luck.

Hi C., I feel your pain! I've been pregnant three times and each time had all day morning sickness. Sea bands (get them at pharmacies/ grocery stores) helped me. They say ginger tea or dried ginger helps. I don't like ginger, so the idea of that made me more nauseous :) Also, my midwife suggested taking B12 in addition to my multi vitamin because there is an (unproven) theory out there that women who are naturally low or deficient in B12 are more likely to be morning sick and therefore B12 can help. It can't hurt! Also, taking my prenatal vitamin at night before I slept helped and being sure to eat small meals throughout the day BEFORE I got hungry, too. Good luck!

I can sympathize with you. My first pregnancy I was sick 24 hours a day till about the 6th or 7th month. I had to be at the top of my game while at work. The first month was the worst. After that you just get used to being sick all the time. I tried everything and nothing worked for me. I threw up all the time. I wish I had a miracle cure, but I don't. People say eat saltines before getting out of bed. You can try that. I hope you find something that works for you. Just remember in the end it will all be worth it. I feel for you C.. Like you I was also sick all day and I'm sorry to say well beyond my first trimester. The usual things didn't work for me (ex. saltine crackers). What worked for me was ginger root (I know it sounds weird, but it's a sweet/salty combo); just a little sliver at a time is good. Also, jolly rancher sweet and sour lollipops. I hope you find some relief soon!

Hi

I was sick to my stomach from conception to delivery every day all day. I worked full time in a high stress finance job and just had to deal with it....kept plastic bags in my car, tried to eat very small frequent meals and stayed hydrated. I had to excuse myself often from meetings. Think I scared all the single men I worked with and they had an appreciation what we go through in having kids!

If you are vomiting also ask your doctor about zofran. I was on it 2x a day since the vomiting was uncontrollable. That was in 2003/2004 so I know treatments change frequently...they give this to chemo patients to control nausea. I kept resisting taking anything but then I just could not take it anymore (think I was about 7 months when I caved).

Keep focused on your baby at the end of these trying 40 weeks and you will feel better in no time soon!

Oh, my heart goes out to you. I was sick all day, too, and it is difficult to get through work. I found that nothing worked for me, but for some reason dairy foods stayed down so I ate a lot of yogurt with fruit and granola for nutrition. Fimd what works for you and always have it on hand. Just know that it is only temporary (although it will feel like forever) and by the end of the first trimester *most* women fell much better. So, you have a few more weeks of this to go through, you can do it. It's hard to ignore it, but you sort of get used to feeling terrible all the time. Remember that it is totally worth it. And believe it or not, you WILL forget just how horrible this feels.

Hi C.. I think I started my Morning (All-Day) sickness around 7 weeks, and mine lasted until a little after 5 months. So I completely understand what you're going through. Now, nothing was able to "cure" my sickness, but there were some things that helped. First of all, make sure you take your prenatal vitamins with food...I had a horrible time with my vitamins, and actually for a couple months just could not take them because they would make me even sicker. I took Flinstones vitamins, and those were much easier to handle. Also, I always had saltines crackers with me. I had them on my nightstand because when I woke in the morning I needed something in my stomach, but I was nauseous, so just laying in bed and eating a couple of saltines helped so I could at least get up and in the shower to start my day. I'm sure you hate feeling miserable, but probably working is the best thing you can do to try to take your mind away from it. Just make sure you take it easy, and everyone will hopefully understand your situation. You will figure out what foods make you feel ok (for me, it was french fries...not sure why, but they usually made me feel better.) Good luck, and just remember that this should pass or at least it will get better. Also, I'm not sure if you have heartburn with this at all, but at the end of my nauseous stage, I started getting heartburn and I didn't know what it was (I just assumed it was still nausea.) So, if you know what heartburn feels like, you may experience that as well. I just always carried tums with me as well. Crackers and tums were helpful for me!!! Good luck, and once you have the baby you will forget about all you and your body had to go through...children are such a blessing!!!

Eating is the best cure. Keep high fiber little snacks close by, things that sponge up the stomach acid. Bag of dry cereal to eat like chips, crackers, cheese, healthy things to keep something in your stomach. I was having to eat pretty much around the clock my third month with my second. I was so nauseous! It was the only thing that helped. It was weird, because the last thing I wanted to do was eat-but it helped A LOT. My doctor told me about it. Good luck, this will really help, and it will pass!

Oh man I feel for you. I don't miss that. I had it well into my 5th month. It was the worst in the morning but I got sick all day long. I tried everything. Sea bands, sucking on candies, crackers, suppositories, ginger everything (which all tasted SO nasty that it made me more sick)... you name it. I lost 10 pounds. Finally someone told me to take Flinstones vitamins instead of my prenatal vitamins because I might have been getting too much iron... I talked to my Dr. and she said it was fine to do that and told me how to take them.... a few days later it subsided, a week later my morning sickness was gone. Talk to your Dr. before you do it of course, but mine said it was perfectly fine and a lot of women do that. Good luck!!

Buy the mini peppermint altoids and stick one under your tongue, it really does work. Also if you cut a fresh lemon in 1/2 and smell it that worked also but mostly the peppermint altoid under the tongue i think i could own the altoid company with as many as i bought.

Hi C.,
I went through the same thing, too. I found that peppermints helped a lot. I kept a bag of them in my desk and always had them wherever I would go. Also, you may want to try SeaBands. They are used for motion sickness, but are actually marketing towards expecting moms for morning sickness. You can get those at any drug store. I would wear them all day long. I found that drinking milk and then driving made me feel worse, so I cut out them milk on days I had to drive to work.
I hope this helps. Good luck with the rest of your pregnancy.

I used the motion sickness wrist bans, sucked on hard candy, ate saltines and sprite. I'm not sure you can get rid of it, but maybe just make it a little more bearable. Try to have crackers or whatever you can tolerate in your stomach, because you don't want it empty. I think that can make it worse.

I am 5 months and had the same issues between nausea and working full time. Pretzels and crackers are great, but if you are running into constipation like I did then switch over to fruit (fresh or dried). They're a great alternative, won't constipate you, and you can snack on them all day long. They are nutritious for you and have a lot of naturally occurring vitamins that you can't get in crackers or pretzels. Preggi Pop Drops (hard candies for pregnant women)also helped quite a bit. You'll find that sometimes NOTHING works, but hang in there. You'll have your good days and bad, but the first time you feel your little one moving around makes the nausea all worth while.

The worst part of pregnancy! I too hated the morning sickness and with my first also had to pull it together and go to work all day. So here are some things that worked best for me and I'd try them all because I've found that each person and each pregnancy is different, you never know what will work for you.
The saltines in the morning before getting out of bed didn't work for me, but dry toast did. Of course you need someone to bring it to you, b/c once you get up there is usually no turning back.
I stopped taking my prenatal vitamin in the morning b/c it made the nausea worse, so I took after whatever the best meal of the day was that I could get to stay down. And If I had known with my first what I knew with my second I would have changed my vitamin. If your vitamin bothers you and having trouble keeping it down then tell your doc they can give you another one or for me the over the counter prenatals were much easier on the stomach. Make sure you read the label b/c some of the over counter ones you need to take 2x a day.
Eat small snacks/meals all day instead of breakfast , lunch, dinner, it really helps to keep your stomach a little full, but not empty or too full!
There are natural ways to break nausea, eat, suck or sniff lemons or drink lemonade. Ginger candy, lollipops, gingerale. Peppermint mints were my savior, I could suck on them anywhere and all the time. and they still work to this day, they're great. You can get a huge bag of those starmints they're called at Walmart for cheap and there are even sugar free ones that taste the same. Just check the label because there are some fake sugars you shouldn't have when pregnant, I forget which ones, but that is why Diet sodas are no good. Lastly watermelon helps too for some reason and good part of the year for it.
Eating salty potato chips also worked for me and its a snack that is not so boring like dry crackers and toast. Also pretzels, jello, and popsicles. Anything mild or bland.
Also, taking an extra supplement of B6 can help, I heard that the nausea in pregnancy is actually caused by a deficiency in B6. Just check with doc on how much to take, its probably just one pill a day. But you may be able to find a B6 vitamin at the store that is for pregnancy and it will tell you how much or research it online!
Good luck and this should pass in the next couple weeks adn then the fun part of pregnancy starts. Just wait till you can feel the baby! Best thing in the whole world! Good luck with eveything, Jennifer

Hi C.,
I don't have any other great tips for dealing with this, but I just wanted to caution you that if the all day sickness continues, talk to your doctor about whether you should have your gall bladder checked (if you've never had it removed, that is). I had "all day sickness" starting about 5 weeks and it continued for MONTHS until a very smart ultrasound finally checked it when everything else she had checked turned up normal. The doctor hadn't thought of it. Gall bladder inflammation is not unusual during pregnancy, I came to learn... Good luck, and I hope everything calms down soon on its own! :-)

I learned with my second pregnancy to try to catch my morning sickness before it bloomed into full nausia, which would then last all day. Crackers & bread helped, but the acid would be too much & just delayed the nausia. What helped for me was a little can of V-8 juice. I personally cannot stand the stuff, so I would try to get most of it down in one shot. The whole little can has to be drank in order to counter the acid in the stomach. When I was pregnant, I had a can of v-8 juice & bag of crackers at the nightstand. so when the first indication of acid upset in my stomach came, I would down the v-8 juice. I also carried a can of v-8 juice in my purse, so if I was out & about ..& experience the first indication of nausia, I would drink the v-8 juice. If I could avoid any/all medications while I was pregnant, I did so.
I had severe nausia with a couple pregnancies and the doctor had to prescribe me a perscription stregnth ant-acid. That helped after the nausia was full blown especially.
If you are really having problems at work, especially with the nausia...talk it over with your doctor. The doctor could write you a prescription for ant-acid & you could try that first. I hate to say it, but sometimes if there is stress at work..it only increases the acid in the stomach causing even more nausia. Keep talking with this with your doctor, the doctor may have to give you work restrictions while you are pregnant at work. Another note of interest that I have found out is that when you are over tired, over stressed, or dehydrated, is when you where more likely to get more morning sickness. So make sure to get plenty of water & rest, hope this helps...

There are these things called "preggie pops" they sell them at the maternity stores. They are a miricle workers. They taste like sour ball candy, but they work. The flavors are good too, tamgerine, cherry, lemon. They worked wonders for me. Also I didn't get morning sickness, it was more midday after lunch, or in the middle of the night. I kept ritz crackers by my bed and in my desk at work and that seemed to help too. My second trimester this goes away. It then comes back a little toward the end of third trimester whe you are getting close to delivery. Hang in there. It gets better.

I had morning sickness, afternoon sickness & evening sickness (not all in the same day) with all three of my babies. I had a pack of salt free saltines with me at all times. They we're my saving grace at that time. Working through your sickness is tough also. I worked full time with #1 and world bring honey not cheerios in a bowl with a lid on it and some milk and eat it around 9-10 a.m. That also helped me. One thing you have to think about is what comes in the end, you're precious bundle of joy! That will help you get through it also! I will never forget when my first baby came into the world. I had the exact same thing! I used sea-bands which are wristbands that have a rounded button on the inside of the band that acts on pressure points. You just have to make sure you wear them in the correct position. You find them in the aisle with seasickness stuff. I also took ginger caplets... in the vitamin aisle. AND... I always kept crackers close by. Had some at my desk, in my car and carried packs of graham crackers in my purse. They helped alot too... especially on my way home from work and I would feel all shaky and my mouth would salvate like I was going to puke. I never once got sick, but I was nauseous 24/7 which was worse! By 12-13 weeks you'll be feeling better.

I hate to tell you this, but the same thing happened to me with my first pregnancy. It basically lasted my whole pregnancy except maybe a few weeks in the middle. I basically kept some type of crackers with me all the time, although now thinking about it, I think I gained a ton of weight that way too because I was constantly munching on stuff. A big key is to have a nice cup of ice cold water at your bedside as soon as you wake up every morning and keep cold water with you all day. Good luck. Hope things get better for you. You can also try motion sickness bracelets and I think my midwife told me to try ginger chews or something like that at the health food store.

Hi C.,

Congratulations on your pregnancy! All-day-sickness (as it should be called) is pretty typical. It lasts generally from about 5-7 weeks until 12-15 weeks. It will pass, but the best thing to do is to eat lots of little meals instead of 3 large ones and keep hydrated. I found that saltine crackers were good. Get lots of rest during your first trimester, your body is making a baby and it will need lots of food and lots of rest. I know how difficult it can be when you are working, but it will pass and you will do fine - you may just not be functioning at 100% for a while.

Congrats again on your pregnancy!

I had morning sickness practically from conception (within one week I was throwing up after every meal). I lost so much weight and was treated for dehydration twice early on that they gave me ZOFRAN (it's typically used for chemo patients to help them eat). Ask your doctor about it...I only took one tablet a day (to get me through work)...I didn't want to take too much medication while prgnant, but the safety of my baby and my health were more important and my doctor supported the mediation as a viable alternative. I also ended up with gestational diabetes...so had to be careful later in the pregnancy with what I ate.

When i was pregnant with my first i had just started a new job and was sick all day and all night. a lot of people recomended saltines and ginger ale, others tell you to snack throughout the day so your stomach is never empty. but honestly the only thing that helped was a prescription from my doctor for Zofran. i was leary about taking the medicine but was told it was perfectly safe and it DEFINITELY helped me with the nausea and vomitting and i was able to work til i delivered. i was also prescribed the Zofran with my second and had no complications with either child. i can truly relate and hope that you find something that will help you and make you comfortable.

There is a button in the cuff that you position over the inside of your wrist. It provides gentle pressure to a point on your wrist and helps reduce nausea. A good friend of mine used to laugh and tell me it was all in my head, but whether real or perceived, it worked for me. I bought them at a pharmacy in the section where they sell dramamine.

To muster the energy to get out of bed in the morning, I prepared the night before by setting out a tall glass of ice water, a bowl of cold water with a wash rag, and a pack of crackers. I set my alarm 15-30 minutes early to give myself time to slowly rise. I nibbled on crackers and sipped the cold water. I placed the cold wash rag on my forehead and sometimes on the back of my neck and on my wrists.

Congratulations on your pregnancy. Hopefully the morning sickness will subside soon.

If you are anything like me, I was against taking any medication when I was pregnant, so I was on another website for Mom's and someone told me to check on SeaBands. You can find them at WalMart in the Pharmacy department. They say they are for motion sickness, but they really help with morning sickness too. They work kind of like acupuncture, except you do not actually puncture your skin. It looks like a sweatband for your wrist except that it has a round ball like thing on the inside of it and you put that in the middle of the inside of your wrist. It seems strange that this would work but it really helped me. It didn't take the sickness away completely but it help a lot! They are machine washable and they cost under $10 a little less than three years ago.

Good luck with your pregnancy. I pray that everything will go well for you.

Sorry to hear about the morning sickness -- not one of the fun moments of pregnancy. I had "morning" (allo day) sickness worse with my first child then my second, so I had no idea what to do.

The crackers in the morning made me feel worse. I tried to eat whatever I thought I could keep down. Grilled cheese on rye was a staple in my diet : ) No citrus, no strong flavors or odors, nothing with a lot of fat (like ice cream) or things that are hard to digest. Oatmeal was also good. Sip on water, herbal iced tea or whatever liquid feels good. Making sure my stomach was not empty helped. I did notice that I felt better if I stayed in the air conditioning, or out of it. Going in an out of the air made me feel worse.

Sometimes I just needed to go through the waves and there was nothing I could do about it. Stressing over it only made my stomach tighten up which made things worse. (Not to be disgusting, but I did carry a plastic bag with me for times when I could not make it to the bathroom, like while commuting. Doing so at least took that pressure away so I didn't have one more worry)

I had a highly visible and productive position, and stress was part of the day. Like you, I just needed to work through it the best I could. Try to take your lunch break and not work through it. If you can, put your feet up on a box under your desk -- something about having your feet up is a little more relaxing. Find the little things that make you feel better, like background music if you can have it at your desk.

Good luck to you. You will get through it : )

Congrats. It is still early but if the sickness lasts you can talk to your Dr. and they might be able to prescribe something. I love and swear by fresh ginger. You can buy it at the grocery store, ginger root, and slice it up and add warm water a little honey and you are all set. The ginger ale really holds true. Good luck.

Have you tried ginger tea? My doctor recommended it, but by the time I got it the nausea was gone, so I don't know if it would have actually worked for me during this pregnancy. During my first pregnancy when I was working I brought chewable Pepto Bismol tablets to work and chewed on them whenever I felt sick. It helped me. Good luck!

I feel for you, because mine was almost unbearable. At babiesRUS you can find preggie pops, and other morning sickness products. On an unusual note, raw celery sticks helped. There is something in it that alleviates nausea. If you like celery. It worked for me. Good luck, if it gets worse tell your doctor. They can help if it gets too much for you.

Good luck,
M.

Hi C.,
The GOOD news is that, most likely, you will only have about another 5 weeks of this!
Eat a few crackers BEFORE you get out of bed and get out of bed very slowly. Through the day, graze on crackers and suck on hard candy. Lemon scent/lemons in water can help. Drink AFTER you eat. Avoid empty stomach--eat more small meals/snacks.
Hang in there! It will pass! Good luck.

I had a form of morning sickness called hyperemesis. It is a very severe form resulting in significant weightloss, dehydration(i was in the hospital weekly for an iv hydration) and in one instance i was even hospitilized for starvation for 3 days. I tell you this because I start getting sick in my 2nd month and it lasts all day. There are medications they can give you that are not harmful to the baby. None of the "tricks" worked for me, but i have heard that peppermint and ginger help and also vitamin b1. if you start to lose a great deal of weight and start showing signs of dehydration call the dr immediantly.....good luck and i hope everything goes well for you and your baby!
