Hi J..

I love Monterey! What a great place to take the kids too. Have you been there before? The aquarium is an awesome adventure for the little ones. Anyway, there is the Marina Dunes Resort which is a few miles outside of Cannery Row. I think it takes 10 minutes or so to get there from the main strip. It's a great boutique hotel that is RIGHT on the sand. The kids can play and play and play on the beach and there are TONS of dolphins swimming out in the water! Most of the rooms have an ocean view and are ocean front. It's a neat place.

There is also the Monterey Plaza Hotel which is nice, but pricey.

Hope this helps!

Stephanie

I grew up in Monterey and my parents still live there (my dad is the head football coach at the high school). There are tons of great hotels/motels in Monterey, but be prepared cause if there is an event (ie:races at Laguna Seca, golf tourney, car shows, etc) or holiday going on when you are planning your trip the price goes up. The Marriott is in downtown Monterey and is reasonable and in walking distance to a lot of attractions and great resturants. Also downtown is the Portal Plaza Hotel, a bit more $ but really nice and you can walk to the wharf. The Hyatt is absolutly beautiful, not sure about price but great hotel. Hotels in Pacific Grove and Marina might be less expensive but then you are driving more. Do not stay in Seaside, most of Seaside is not that great of a neighborhood if you know what I mean. Carmel will be very expensive but definatley visit. Don't stay in Salinas either it is close to Monterey but is actually at least a 30min drive (my mom works in Salinas so know). Also where ever you do stay check to see if the hotel has discounted tickets to the aquarium, some do but not all. If you have anymore questions about Monterey feel free to email me! Enjoy! (oh by the way July tends to be overcast in Monterey)

The Pacific is a bit pricey, but I understand that there is a hotel down the street from there. I completely forgot the name, I attend annual conferences in Monterey and my colleagues rave about the place down teh street. Sorry, I just wanted to throw it out there and maybe you can do some research of the area. The Pacific is right by the pier and plenty of eateries and shops. Have fun - its a great city to visit.

Try to see if you can find a Courtyard Marriott in that area. They are the same price as a La Quinta Inn, but you cannot even begin to compare!! They are gorgeous, the beds are amazing, the linens are so soft, and you have like a gazillion pillows on the bed---2 soft, 2 regular, 2 firm! We always get a room w/a couch so we can watch TV, and the rates vary per area, so be sure and try the auto club discount/specials. Saves a ton of money, and sometimes you can get a free brunch for your entire family!

We just came back from our Monterey Vacation and we stayed at the Best Western Beach Dunes Inn, Marina - 4 miles north of Monterey. The price is very reasonable and the place is very clean. It is a walking distance to the beach and you can watch hang-gliders take off/land at beach. It is a lot better than staying right in Monterey, where the hotels are small and cramp and old. Check out their website, where they have a webcam and you can see what the area looks like in real-time.
