Hi Moms,
Give me your opinion about Mattel's Monster High Dolls. I know what I think; just curious how others view these dolls...

Ok. Here's the deal. My almost 6 year old wants one for her birthday. I don't want to offend anyone, but in my opinion, they look like hookers! Monster hookers, I guess, haha. Too much like the Bratz dolls for my taste. Just wondering if I'm a stick in the mud or what :)

What can I do next?

I think they're pretty neat. I bought the "Alice in Monsterland" one to include with my Alice in wonderland collection I've had since I was little because I thought it was so different.
I think it takes the "scary" out of "monsters" for kids. I don't think everything has to be "cutsie" for kids to play with.
They're clothes are a step above Bratz and not too far off from Barbie stuff.
My kids get a kick out of zombies, vamipres and the like :)

They are definitely too highly sexually charged - and they are high school aged dolls, if my child went to high school looking like that, I'd have to shred all her slutty clothing she had stashed somewhere because I would not have bought them for her.

During Christmas my seven year old daughter wanted nothing else but a Monster High Doll in fact she had to have Clawdeen Wolf. I went through the same thing your going through with regards to looking at these trashy dolls. She wanted this doll so much and I have never seen her want something soooooo bad. I finally broke down because my daughter is very reserved she will always point out when the young girls in the mall are dressed inappropriately. So I got on E-BAY and purchased one for her. After she opened her gift from Santa she was so happy. I did explain to her that I thought that Clawdeen was not dressed appropriately and if I was her mom I wouldn't allow her to wear such things. She actually agreed and told me that she just loves her teeth and hair so much that she doesn't pay attention to her clothes. Clawdeen is my daughter's most played with doll, I don't regret it but I am glad I had the talk with her.

Cute for older teens, no way for the younger girls and preteens. Haven't read the back stories, so not sure about that part. They are less trashy looking than Bratz, but still not what I would get my child.

I don't see how they're different then any other doll.
Just my opinion.

Just another gimmick to sell more dolls. My girls have one each that they got as gifts, they're in the box with all the other barbies...I guess it's a "eh, whatever" for me.

i have a 6 yo and luckily i don't think she has ever seen an advertisement for them. I don't like them at all, I'm not a fan of the bratz either and even some of the Barbies push the line for me.

I really love the mom that said she discussed with her daughter that the clothes weren't nice. I've also seen them want an items so bad and then never play with it.

Personally i think she is still young enough that saying no is fine and offering something else in it's place would probably distract her.

If you are a stick inthe mud then so am I. I figure there will be enough to deal with when she is 16 no need to start her off at 6.

I saw them at target the other day and almost bought every one of them(thank god hubby was with and didnt let it happen). I would display in my room. I think they are a little much for little ones. I am a tattooed pierced mama with well, not my original hair color. They are totally who i was before kiddos. So, as silly as it sounds I would keep them, to keep a part of my youth i guess. I would eventually sell them at a garage sale or consignment store.

I dont think they are for the youn'ins. but older teens, eh why not?

IMO,
-Libby

I don't think they're aimed at kids your daughters age, so that will have to be your call on whether or not she gets one. For the age group, I think they're cute. I did notice they also have stuffed dolls that were more like a ragdoll maybe that would be a good compromise?

I think they're cute. A little hoochie-looking at times, but better than those "Bratz"... Why? Is there some controversy or something??

It is my understanding the books are for young adults.. teens.
My niece is in 7th grade and has talked about them, but she is actually past dolls. She said she "does not actually want any, Thank you very much!". She is hilarious.

What I have found is that the girls in college are collecting as "collectors items" Because they are sure the entire thing will be very short lived.

my 4 year old has a couple. she likes them and i dont see the issue with them. they arent too differently dressed then a barbie and other dolls. to me its a toy. if she was a boy would you be against her having toy guns and knives? but just because some moms dont see and issue with them doesnt mean other moms share that view. its your choice to let your daughter have one.

Well, they do remind me a little of the Bratz dolls. I know some parents were very, very serious that they would not allow their kids to play with those dolls or receive them as gifts a few years back. Personally, I didn't feel the need to make such a huge taboo of it all. Anyway, my 11 year old wanted some Monster High dolls in the worst way for Christmas. She's at that stage when she is still really a little kid at heart, loves to play with toys and dolls still, but feels awkward and embarassed because she doesn't want to be seen as babyish. The dolls go from being proudly dressed and displayed to hurriedly stuffed in a closet, and back out again. I am wistful about her growing up. Soon she won't even be asking for dolls anymore. I'm willing to overlook the length of the skirts, etc. It's not like I'm allowing her to dress that way, and she's not even asking for those type of clothes. They are just toys to her. Santa brought the Monster High dolls, and also the book.

My 6 year old has every monster high doll, she watches the webisodes online and so do most of her 1st grade friends. Our daughters don't look to their MONSTER dolls for clues on appropriate dressing, as long as you dress nicely, so will she. It's make belive, a less scary, girly way to play monsters.
