I am looking to change my custody with my ex, however our divorce was in pinal county and I now live in Mesa, (maricopa county). Can I go to a court out here to start the custody battle. Also looking for a family lawyer to help either at a discount or Pro bono for a domestic violence survivor...Any suggestions would be very helpful...

What can I do next?

S., there is very little pro bono assistance available, and what is available is "triaged" out to help the most needy. In your case, since you are already out of your abusive situation, it's unlikely that you will be able to get pro bono help.

However, having said that, you can still possibly do what you need to do for free, if you are willing to do the work yourself. Go down to the Clerk of the Court during business hours and ask the people at the desk for materials to file for a change of custody. They should give you everything you need, and at least some advice for filling it out (although not legal advice). You will usually need to demonstrate some significant change of circumstance to get custody reconsidered. There used to be a lot of helpful information online through maricopa county, too. Good luck to you.

S.,
Kudos to you for seeking support. As far as changing your custody arrangement is concerned, you can hire an attorney in the East Valley, but you will have to go back to court in Pinal County to change the custody arrangement. That shouldn't be a problem, aside from a longer drive. I know of a couple of family law firms in the East Valley: Nirenstein Ruotolo Garnice Group is a firm in Tempe that does only family law. Also, Wilson-Goodman and Fong is a firm in Gilbert (I think). They practice in a lot of areas, including family law. I do not practice family law, but I'm happy to answer any questions I can, so feel free to send me a message. Best of luck to you!

I was also in an abusive relationship. I feel for you and am glad you had enough courage and self esteem to get out of it! I'm sorry I don't know about the custody battles - my ex signed them over and my husband (now of 33 years!) adopted them. Good luck!

S., I have been in the same situation. My marriage was 15 yrs, w/ my divorce & my 15 yr anniversary on the same day. I went to try to help my ex- due to he was too far behind on C.S.- 10 months behind. I am right now going through Wilson-Goodman & Fong- So far I am dealing w/ C.S., Child custody & now recent a Protective order- on the ex. & a new trip of dealing / 2 liars- My ex & his new,Fiance, he has not even told his kids, our kids, because he doesn't think it is right for the ex-wife & the new lover to meet, when he moves them into live w/ him. You should really go talk to Wilson-Goodman & Fong- they also have an office out here in Queen Creek, South on Ellsworth- South of Ocotillo. My attorney is the best, and they do have some really good attorneys there & they have a really good repor w/ the Judges. The are n the phone book give them a try.
