Hi D.,
I work for a school district and so I would suggest to call your child's school and see what programs they might offer. We have a department called Special Programs which offers help in all different areas. It's beneficial for children who, like your son, might just need a little extra TLC in this area.
Good luck and don't be discouraged. Every child learns at his/her own pace.

This is exactly what I am going through. My daughter is 8 and she was tested in 1st grade. She was so far behind in school that when we found out that she was dyslexic I asked the school to hold her back a year. They said they didn't do that anymore. So I put her in a montessori school. She did do alot better there. I think just not having that typical school structure helped alot. She learned more in that school in 7 months she was there then she did in 2 years of public school. Then we moved here. She stayed with her dad in Minnesota til school was out but he lives in a different town so she had to start public again. She isn't going anywhere. She might even be regressing. This is a very hard thing for me because I have never had any problem learning. I learn really fast actually. So hearing that other people feel the same way is great. My only question is... What school should I put her in out here? I'm completely lost.

Hi D.,
I'm a bit of a health nut as I don't believe in most of the western medicine/pharmaceutical practices after lots of research on these issues. So this will explain my response here.

Here's a link that discusses the importance of Omega 3 in our diets, if you don't already know about this: http://www.mercola.com/2001/sep/8/omega_3.htm

And another solution that you can try yourself at home from the same website: http://www.mercola.com/2006/feb/25/dealing_with_dyslexia_...

Both are worth a shot in my view.

Here's some more tips for you from other sources:

My husband is Dslexia well there is programs for this but if you want to help him at home well there is a few things you can do

1. Put his home work on collerd paper it takes the exzity out of it.

2. Rember they learn sight hearing and hands on. so try to teach him in three difernt ways in a row. Like on a chalk bord and pitchers also a story.

3.Test this is so hard for them you can go to his teacher about this learning dissabilty and request test in advance so he can review so when he takes it in class it wount be scarry also you can have his teacher put his test on collerd paper.

Black and white is just to difficalt for kids with this learning diss. to even look at and not get scard.

I think this will help you a little bit and if you have any questions just wright me

not only is my husband this way I usto work with lots of kids in having a learning diss. I went to collage and have a digree in T.A. 4 Sp.Ed

The reason why I wanted to do this is I have learning diss. to

Has the school told you that the school district can help your son. They are required by law to test and provide support for learning disabilities as well as for anything that hinders school success. Call the Multnomah County Educational Service District. Their services are free.

My grandson, who is 3, has been diagnosed with speech apraxia and Multnomah Co School District is proving him with speech therapy and play therapy as well as providing support to his mother. She is pleased with what they have been able to provide for her and her son.

There are alot of learning games for computer he may respond to. Go to Fry's they have a huge selection. Also flash cards are available. You could get the boys to make a game of it. Also alot of kids respond to music. I know they have CDs that teach sounds. Has he had his ears checked? Maybe he's not hearing them right. Another good place to check out real good learning tools is the Discovery Store. The Discovery Store may be kind of expensive, but they have some excellent products.
Have you talked with the school councelor? They may have further info/suggestions or can find out what is available.

D.,

If you find a solution to this issue, please let me know. I have the same problem with my son who just turned 8 years last month. We are concerned that he might not graduate from the 2nd grade. He struggles with reading and math, yet anything having to do with art or creativity he does fine. He's always off in his own little world and gets sidetracked very easily. I ask him to do something and on his way to doing it (after being asked many times to do it), he'll get off on some other task and forget what he was asked to do. I often wonder if he's ADD or ADHD.
