Mom of a 5 Year old....Am I over Reacting to These Symptoms??

Ok, so my 5 year old recently fell backwards off of a metal slide and cracked his head on the steps on the way down. THANK GOD we caught him before he hit the pavement, but we still ended up having to get 3 staples put in. Staples have been out for about 2 weeks now, and he's now started complaining of headaches, which he's never done before ever. So it was a red flag for me. Also last week he had a rash only on his face that looked like a heat rash that would come and go over night. Now he's complaining his tummy hurts and even had an accident over night on sunday (actually pooped his pants in his sleep). So, with the accident, and now tummy aches, rashes and multiple headaches, I'm thinking I should take him in just to make sure that something isn't going on. Made an appointment for today, but was just curious if anyone had any advice or had a similar story? I feel like I'm over reacting, and that the doc will see it that way, but this behavior just isn't normal for him. Especially the headaches. :(

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you to all of you wonderful mommy's who gave me advice and offered support! Words can't express how much I appreciated all of that.

My sons doctor said it could be a number of things, but since it was so close to him having a head injury, and never having headaches before, he thought it was a good idea to do a scan. So a MRI was ordered for late yesterday afternoon. Didn't hear anything last night, so today I finally called. Nurse called back and said that the results showed that my son has some fluid build up in the front of his head, which would explain why he always told me his head hurt in the front. :( The nurse told me the doctor is going to call the neurologist, and see what he thinks the next steps should be, if anything.

I'm so glad I took him in!

since i'm new to mamapedia, i'm not sure if i can post updates to this post again after this one. if i can i'll let you know what the doctor/neurologist say. if not, thank you again to everyone who offered thoughts and prayers! you girls are great! <3

Take him to his pediatrician, tell them what happened and his symptoms and that you need to have him seen asap.

The first thing they tell you to look for is things that are different than normal. When a child starts doing things he never did before then it is time to see a doctor. If they do not give you peace of mind take him to another doctor. Your instincts are what God gave you to protect the most precious thing on earth. Listen to them. I had rather be told that I am over reacting than to be told I did not do enough. saying a prayer for him!!

I don't think you're overreacting at all. It's good that you're taking him in. Just wait and see what the doctor says, maybe it's just coincidence, hopefully, but it's a good choice to have him checked out!

I don't think you're over reacting at all. These behaviors are "different" for your son and the behaviors/symptoms have occurred AFTER a head trauma, and that's a very good reason to have him seen asap. Best of luck!

I would take him to the e/r that he had the staples put in. They normally don't like to subject younger children to radiation, but to rule anything out they will. My husband likes to call me neurotic but I'd rather take a chance then worry. You could call your pediatrician but normally they will just tell you to go to the e/r anyways or they may just have you come in and give u an RX for a CT scan which may save you some time at the ER - good luck!

Absolutely! You are not over reacting. He could a medical condition or could simply be having a reaction to a very scarey and traumatic experience... Don't waste time second guessing yourself....always listen to your gut. If it's nothing then you and your son will sleep easier! Keep us posted and lot's of prayers being sent your way.

I've never had to go through this, thank God, but I definitely think you should have your son checked out. The complaints he has now may be something completely unrelated to the injuries he sustained in his accident. You do get headaches, rashes and an upset tummy with the flu but it isn't flu season. Maybe he is having a bout with some other viral or bacterial infection or has come down with food poisoning. But the timing is suspicious and I would want to have it checked out by an MD. I would also suggest taking him to go see a chiropractor when he is feeling a little better. No doubt, his fall may have tweaked his neck a bit, maybe why he is having headaches and tummy trouble.

I hope you get some positive news today and that your son feels better soon.

he has the symptoms of a concussion. even if it's not, that's what doctors are for, to rule stuff in and out. you aren't over reacting, head injuries can be serious. take him to the doctor. if it's not really "anything" you'll know that too.

You are NOT over reacting. I would be concerned too and would push to visit a neurologist. I know you want us to say you are over reacting, but you would have to check all this out no matter what. It could be nothing, but you cannot take a chance.

I would specifically request a CT scan or MRI for your son. That is not an overreaction based on his fall and his symptoms. It will also put your mind at ease to know if he has any brain injury. Don't let the doctor put you off on this one - better safe than sorry.

Actually I am one of those moms who think that many mothers over react and this time I want to say, I do feel you have reason for concern. I would take him in and talk with your doctor. I think they should order a head CT and see what else is going on. I do not like for kids to undergo more scans than ever are needed, but the poopy accident actually has me more concern than the other additional symptoms. So NO you are not overreacting. For sure have it investigated. When parents have children who have "Dry Death Drownings" even sometime the only sign was that the kid was very sleepy more than normal and had an accident in the pants.
Listen to your gut and if you know this is behavior out of the norm, do not take NO for an answer. Us Mommies many times know better than the medical professionals when it comes to our kiddos. Believe it or not, the most life changing medical discoveries I have made came when I was being a wife or mom and not a medical professional. Good for you to have an appointment, but do not take No it is okay as your answer until they show you the facts.

i dont think you are overreacting at all and if your doctor tells you that, GET A SECOND OPINION. this is your son you are talking about. your instincts are more trustworthy than any doctor. if your doctor wont help you figure out whats up, find one that will.

good luck. praying for you.

The new symtoms are similar to strep. At least in my kids, they always get the stomachaches, headaches and diareha, but never really a fever.

Since he had a bad injury, its ALWAYS better to be SEEM overreacting and have it evaluated, then to worry about what the drs. will think, not go and be wrong.

Just last month my 3 1/2y daughter had a cold. Started coughing. On the 4th day she started getting really tired and begging to go to bed (NOT like her!). Took her in on day 5. Turns out she had the start of pnemonia in one of her lungs. SOOO glad I took her in.

Oh, and I agree with Laurie D about the chiropracter and back injury. A back injury can cause headaches and bowel accident. I had a back injury, was having the same symptoms. Finally when I couldn't stand straight. I went to the chiro and all of his 'are you experiencing...' questions were spot on. He said that bowel issues that are spur of the moment and you almost don't make it to the bathroom are a common symptom of a back injury.

Good luck. Hopefully its just strep =)

Sounds like a trip to the Dr is in order. I think this may totally be unrelated to a fall but sounds more like a sinus infection. Yes infections can make you sick to your stomach, rashes etc, it could also be stress from the fall. But taking him in would be on the top of my list. Good Luck and prayers that everything is okay!

The headaches could be related to the healing head injury, or could be a result of stress -- the whole experience must have been somewhat traumatic for him. The other symptoms seem like they are from stress, not from a straight medical problem. I wouldn't worry or make too big of a deal out of it, just be really calm and reassuring to help him with his fears about what happened.

I would say that it's entirely possible those things are stress or fear related...but if your doc makes light of it, you don't have the greatest doctor! Any time you have weird reactions to a head injury, I think it's worth checking out--better to be told you overreacted than to have something be wrong and not find out.

I don't want to scare you but the headache can be a sign of slow bleeding in the brain. My mom hit her head in March and just had surgery in July to remove bleeding. I would take him in and get a CT scan of his head.

When you took your son in the first time, did they do an MRI or CT scan? He may have a concussion and experiencing delayed symptoms. I would contact his physician and make sure to have him checked out.
A CT scan or MRI should be done any time a person has any type of significant head injury, especially a child. I hit my head a couple of years back and never went in to see the dr, and about 2 weeks later started falling down at work. I went in and had an MRI done and found out that I had a severe concussion from the fall and still had swelling on my brain, which caused a myriad of problems, from falling down suddenly to short term memory loss, dizziness, nausea, vision problems, etc. Take your son in and have one done. Better to be safe than sorry!

I would take him in for the headaches. That is all I would mention in regards to the stitches situations.

I'm sure the heat rash is a heat rash. it's been disgusting out but after you address the headache and let him/her see what they think about the headache I'd casually ask about helping him with the heat rash.

I'd also casually mention the pooping the pants but accidents happen. It happened to my son when he was 5 maybe two times. He's now 7 and fine. I'd see that as normal. Now if it happens all the sudden a bunch I'd mention that later.

But the only thing that I'd worry about is the headaches. The other things are perfectly normal. I think you are looking for Zebra's when you have a whole lot of horses.

(sorry that came from the medical saying if you hear huff beats think horses not zebra's)
