I am a single mom of a 6 year old boy that was diagnosed with ADHD last year I am looking to chat with other mothers in the same boat as I am. Mornings are hard for me when getting him ready for school as well as nighttime when he is getting ready for bed (which is before the meds kick in and after they wear off) Since he was diagnosed and put on meds he is much better behaved as well as he is excelling in school. I am just looking for some feed back.

i have an 8 yr old son that i found out he had ADHD just be4 he turned 5. Best bets are having clothes ready for school & Structure /Structure you get the picture. A routine helps any kid for that matter be more settled. 1 of the best way of telling if your child is ADHD is if Caffeine calms him down. Coffee puts me out so i know its true. Doctors have told me to give son either like a dish of ice cream or a PBJ sandwhich every nite be4 bed to help stay asleep. My son is also extremly bright he just gets bored fast .Email me if you woould like

Hello T.,

I'm Tina and i have a 7 year old son that has been diagnosed
ADHD. He was diagnosed at age 4. I know exactly what you are going though, he takes meds for school. I have other to give him after school but i hate to keep giving him meds all the time because he has to take a pill to get him to go to sleep. the only thing that really helps me is that we have a 4 wheeler and he loves to ride it so in the evenings he has to do all of his homework and anything else that needs to be done before he can ride. but it is still hard. i don't have any solutions but i do know exactly what you are going though.

hello,
I too hve two sons agges 12 and 14 with ADD and ADHD. The most important thing that I can tell you is schedule. They need to know when and what to expect every day allday. The hardest time is when they get off the bus because the regiment stops. I have a preset time for homework and then play. We also do Karate. This helps teach them self control and focus. We go to GoNoSen in Peekskill. We have been going now for 8 years. Both of my boys have had problems sleeping at night because once the body shuts down the brain kicks into high gear. We give them Concerta during the day and Clonidine A very small dose in the eve just to relax them so that they can fall asleep, I tried everything over the counter even NYquil at one point but I felt guilty like I was trying to drug them. That is when our Dr. gave us the Clonidine. What a miracle. My 12 year old still gets wild after school but with age they learn how to handle it better. Things will improve. Just don't expect them to sit still for long periods of time. When you are driving or they have to sit still make sure that you give them something to do. As for the clothes for the morning,You may think that this sounds awful but I used to get them dressed the night before so it wouldn't stress them too much in the morning. It takes a while for the meds to start working so you have to allow for that. My friends tell me that we are a fast moving family but that comes from having to keep up with the two boys. Get him a GameBoy or something to keep his mind busy but then you will probably need to limit the time. Please get you son classified or at least the 504 plan for school just to help him. Do not be too h*** o* yourself. You did nothing to cause this. We used to feed the boys as they were running around the dinner table at night because I could never geth them to sit long enough to eat.Forget long drives in the car -- they couldn't stay inthe car seats long enough. Plan short trips and do a little at a time. People may not understand why your house is a mess but it is ok. You have a special needs kid that requires more time and effort. Choose your battles like I did with the clothes at night. It is worth it to keep your sanity. My relatives are very h*** o* me because they think that my kids don't need to be medicated and that I don't try hard enough. Little do they know. Do the best you can and it will all work out.
If I can be of any help let me know. ____@____.com

my 8 year old stepson was diagnosed with ADHD when he was 6. it has been a tough road, especially with his grades in school. my sons doctor told us that with the ADHD medicine, it doesnt just take the problem away, u have to teach ur kids how to manage their behavior and their schoolwork, while they are on the medicine. its like teaching them to control themselves. now 2 years later everyuthing is going well. grades are up, and for the most part he behaves well. but lets not forget they are just young boys and regardless of ADHD or not they have got a lot of energy.

hi T., I have a fourteen year old child who has ADHD and has beeen disagonised since she was five years of age. I am writing this just to give you a couple of suggestions, that have worked for me. For the morning time get his stuff ready the nite before, {clothes, breakfast dishes, and even school stuff} One thing that I have also used is lavendar calendars, or anything that is lavendar for when he is going to bed. Don't allow him any thing with cafferine, or even sugar a couple hours before he goes to bed. Also try a warm bath. Also talk to your doctor about using one of the one day meds like concerta if they are given as soon as he wakes they should be out of his system before he goes to bed. It does get easier as they get older in with dealing with it. good luck

Hi T.,

I have a five year old ADHD son. He was put on meds in Septemeber, though he was diagnosed with the ADHD earlier. I givehim is meds first thing in the morning before he goes to school. I have to tell you I really don't see much of a difference when he takes them, except he isn't running from one end of the house to the other. I know in school he still has to get time to go to the gym to release some energy. He has a hard time focusing on tasks that do not involve physical activity. Bed time isn't that bad, after his bath he goes to bed, and it seems that as soon as his head hits the pillow he is out. My suggestion is to try to keep your son as active as possible throughout the day.

My son was diagnosed at the same age as yours and is now nine. I find that giving him breakfast with his pill first thing in the morning seems to help. When the pill wears off I give him some quiet time alone reading and make sure he gets plenty of rest.
What kind of medication does your son take?
My oldest was on a type of medication where she was taking a half of a dose after school.Ask your doctor f this is an option for him. Good news is that she out grew ADHD and is off her medication this year. She is thirteen now.
