Molluscum Contagiosum - San Antonio,TX

My son had this. To this day, I don't know how he got it, but it really bothered me. He first had some on his hands, then belly and eventually got a few on his face (about 3 or 4). I took his to Texas Children's dermatology dept and they did the treatment with the liquid nitrogen. Now, it may not sound like fun or sound like something you would want your child to go through, but it was the best thing ever. After about 24 hours it would scab up as though he had a small scratch and over the next 1-2 weeks, it completely went away. My son had about 4 treatments total. I would like about 1-2 months go by between treatments or I would schedule him as they would pop up. It is considered an outpt surgery, but is literally just an office visit. The nurse is also the one giving the treatment. They were very much qualified!!! This occurred I want to say when my son was around 4 or 5 years old. He is now 10 and after those few treatments years ago, he has not had this problem re-occur. So, if you are asking for an opinion, I would say definitely just take him in and let this do this treatment. We tried the creams and they did NOTHING! Plus, they were about $100 or so for the smallest tube. The treatment with the liquid nitrogen is worth it! Not to mention, in my opinion, the most effective and fastest way to get rid of it. All three of my kids have had it. Starting with my son who was in preK. We went to a dermatologist and they tried to burn them off (there were just a few) next thing we knew there were a bunch more. We tried retin A which seemed to help him, but did not help the other 2 kids who got molluscum right after the first child's bumps cleared. We tried iodine tincture on the open ones which prevented further spreading. I tried tape stipping with my kids to break them up before putting the iodine on, but they didn't enjoy the tape stripping part very much. Tagamet (Cimetadine) may have helped clear my other son's but my daughter has had them for about a year. She is now 4 and it is most likely because she just keeps scratching and spreading. God only knows what actually worked, but none of these hurt, except for a little scarring from the burning with "beatle juice" on the first kid and my daughter's scratching hers open. Not too bas, just looks like my smaller chicken pox scars.

You can google molluscum and cimetidine (sp?) to find the pedi dosage recommended.
My pediatrician said her daughters cleared during the 2 month wait to see their dermatologist.

My step daughter had this on the back of her legs and the dr. froze them. We applied meds and kept her from messing with them. We kept away from really hot baths and kept lotion on them. It has been a year and they are totally gone.

Not to worry, this is curable. I had this issue myself on my thighs and upper calves and went to see a local dermatologist. She said it was some sort of bacterial infection-thus, molluscum, and the first visit she clipped off a few and treated them with medication. After I was done with the medication they diminished - completely. I have never seen them since. I feel for your poor baby since she has them on her face. I am sure that with the proper treatment it will be taken care of for good. Good Luck!

My son came home from the hospital with two bumps on his right hand. we finally noticed it when he was a few weeks old. for a while we didn't know what it was and just left it alone thinking it would just go away on its own. When he was a few months shy of a year it started to spread all over his body. some bumps were bigger than others. thankfully the ones around his eyes were very tiny. I talked to his pediatrician about them and since he was too young for a steroid creme and they were not obtrusive to his face we decided to see if they would go away naturally. our doctor said that usually molluscum goes away within two to three years anyways and since it wasn't bothering anything we decided to not freeze them off or anything either. he is about to turn two this april and doesn't have a single bump left on him. he has one tiny scar on his lower back but that is the only sign of the virus he once had. I know every case is different and I am not sure of the severity of the ones on her face but I would say let nature take its course. If you want to try the meds I don't think it could hurt anything and expecially; if you feel that it is hurting her self esteem or things like that then I think it couldn't hurt to try. As for the freezing off I would be careful with the ones on her face because it could leave a scar. Good luck with everything let us know what you decide to do I am interested to hear. T.

I'm not a Physician and I don't intend to prescribe anything to "cure" your daughters condition but you may want to consider the following information.

I read the response where one of the moms said a Dr. called it a bacterial infection. If this is the case you may want to consider MELALEUCA (ERICIFOLIA) ESSENTIAL OIL
Melaleuca ericifolia is a variety of melaleuca oil that is known to be exceptionally gentle and non-irritating to the skin and is supposed to work well for bacterial infections. It has also been known to have calming properties. You may want to try it diluted 50:50 with an organic almomd or grapeseed carrier oil. Lavender Essential Oil is supposed to work well for blisters caused by fungal and viral infestations. Of course, I don't know what your daughter has but you may want to try simple natural alternatives before burning anything off your daughters face.
