I wouldn't wash my child's mouth out with soap or squirt vinegar in it. I would take away privileges.

Neither one, ick. really i thought these tactics were oldschool and we have since discovered better methods.

Like real life consequences. As adults when we say something inappropriate the offended party will not squirt, soap, vinegar, or hot sauce in our mouth. They will de-friend, fire, expell, divorce, walk away.....etc.. I believe a more appropriate response to backtalking would be an explanation and a removal from an activity.

I mean our kids are not like our animals in which a little spray bottle will suffice as a reminder to "hush"

If you want respect from your child or peers, you must give respect.

Bullying your child is WRONG. AdHd or not..... Have compassion and love for your child or he will grow up to hate you.

I looked at your previous posts - you mention your son is ADHD. If he's been diagnosed, are you getting help from the school district or anything? Are you getting any help yourself in terms of being taught how to handle this stuff? It sounds like he has some rather compex issues and if you aren't being given the tools to deal with this, things are just going to get worse. I wish you the best and hope you can get some help!

BD, I know that you've had some really ugly remarks on both of your posts. To be honest, parents have lots of different views of how to handle children who are rude. Plenty of parents "back in the day" washed their kids' mouths out with soap for back-talking or saying bad words. Those kids are adults now, and unless they have horrendous parents, they don't hate them, like one poster said. These adults whose mouths were washed out for talking back have turned out to be decent human beings.

A friend of mine who has really good kids used tobasco sauce, and only had to do it a few times when her sweet tween daughter turned into a smart-mouth overnight. It didn't take but a few times to snap her out of it.

I don't know how old your child is. You are not a monster if you do it. There are other things you can do, but they are probably harder. Supernanny's approach handles this along with other behavioral problems, and it well may be worth your while to do it.

By the way, Grandma T on your other thread did it, and no one here would have the gall to plaster her like they plastered you. She's a pretty smart lady - so talk to her if you need more advice.

All my best,
Dawn

Well I think you'd have better luck if you get a time out chair be consistant even in a mall and giver him/her a time out. Have you ever watched Super Nanny?

I wouldn't do the vinegar and water thing. I have taken to at times when time outs don't work and I can't hang with it, I keep the ready to eat Pink Grapefruit with no sugar in it. If my kids cruse it's the cursing fruit they have to it 3 bites. It won't hurt them and usually most kids act up when they need a good poop. So it helps that too

WTW? Serious? I've heard that but I don't think that's smart or right.

A child talking back probably get the behavior from a parent. There are proper ways to deal with an unruly child but I don't think that's it. And sometimes it only escalates a child's already unruly behavior. Consider the company you keep and/or his/her friends.

Put him/her in some organized sporting activities (check your county for free/discounted). I hear karate is good for children as well and they start as early as 4yo. I think it's Karate Atlanta and they're offering deals I believe.

I don't know about that mixture, but I do the washing my daughters mouth out with soap.yes, it may "old school" but at least then children listened to their parents. I have a friend who does hot sauce. The soap isn't toxic especially if you're just rubbing it on their tongue to get the point across. IMO though
