Mixing Medicine with Food

My 15 month old daughter has to take an antibiotic every night for a year to prevent her from getting another urinary tract infection. The medicine is in a capsule that I have to pull apart and mix with food for her to take. Tonight was her first night with it, and I mixed it with vanilla pudding. She did wonderful with this! However, I don't want to have to give her vanilla pudding every night for a year! haha What are some other ideas for giving the medicine with food? I figure that if she doesn't have something for dinner that's easy to mix the medicine with (like mashed potatoes) then I'll give it with some sort of snack after dinner (like the pudding). I would also need to have some things on hand that would be good for travel, in case we aren't home for dinner. The pudding would work since it is individually packaged and doesn't require refrigeration or preparation.

Any other ideas?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I haven't been able to get her to eat applesauce in the past (even tho she liked the baby food jars of it), but I'll have to get some more and try it again. I tried mixing it in a little bit of water, and she didn't mind a bit! She loves water, so that will be a great way to give the medicine to her. Thanks for everyone's ideas!

hi...my 1 year old son takes singulair in a chewable form everyday, but we mix it in his food since he doesnt understand how to chew the pill yet. I usually mix it in his morning bottle, but when he doesnt take a bottle i usually mix it in a small about of water or juice. i use a small amount just so i know that he is getting all the medicine and not getting full before its gone. If you give milk or water at dinner that is a great way to hide the antiobiotic so you dont get in the habit of a before bed snack. Hope this helps some!! M.

My husband has worked in the pharmacy dept for 8 years now. He said that you can dissolve the medicine/powder in juice or water. Just make sure it dissolves completely before you give it to her.

You could use apple sauce. You can get the no sugar added in the individually packaged and it doesn't have to be in the fridge. I like to do mine children's in something like this because they get it all in one bite and you don't have to worry about them eatting alot. Good Luck.

I'm not sure what foods your daughter likes but a couple of healthy alternatives could be single serving applesauce (which you could travel with since it doesn't have to be refrigerated) or yogurt.
If it will dissolve in liquids, you might also try dissolving it in her juice/milk/water.

I remember my mom using applesauce. It comes individually packaged now also. Yogurt might be another alternative but of course not very travel friendly.

We are on a daily antibiotic to for preventive UTIs. Have they tried the antibiotic liquid BACTRIM? That is what most kids are on for that. My 9 month old loves the grape taste. I didnt know if they tried this already or she cant take it, I would ask the dr about it atleast.

At the local grocery store you will find all kinds of solutions. Apple Sauce, etc.. Any kind of snack that can be carried in a diaper bag would work. I would check out to see what the grocery store has to offer. My boy is 4 and I have forgotten what I got him at this age for snacks.

Pudding, Apple Sauce, Yougert, ice cream (soft serve),etc.

I have been in your shoes more than once! I didn't like giving my son pudding all the time so I tried something a little more healthier. APPLESAUCE! It is also individually packaged, doesn't require refrigeration or preparation, and has a many different flavors. Or you could also try mixing it in peanut butter a serve it with crackers. Jiff has individually packaged containers also! Well hope I helped you alittle bit! Best Wishes!
