Missed Period, Vasectomy and Negative Urine Test

Hi Mamas,

So I'm 2 weeks late and trying not to get my hopes up. My husband had a vasectomy about 6 years ago (before we met) and we are planning on getting it reversed soon. I took an at home pregnancy test last night and this morning and both were negative.

We both recently lost our jobs but it has been all around a positive thing. We were working for my Dad (i know, I know, it was a terrible idea). I am having a falling out with him from a conversation we had last Spring (personal issue). We have been civil (celebrated Christmas together) and the relationship with the rest of the family is great. I'm happier and less stressed than I've been in months. My husband is likely going to get a job soon that will pay well more than what we were making before so I'm expecting to be able to stay home with our daughter and prep for applying to grad school at the end of this year (woot!). My relationship with my husband has never been better and all three of our children are doing wonderfully. I can't ignore that my period is late the month of some major changes... but I've never had a late period from stress before (and I've experienced some stress, let me tell you!)

I know I shouldn't get my hopes up so I'm hoping you ladies can keep me on Earth. I emailed my doctor about getting a blood test but the longer I wait the more hopeful I am and if I'm not pregnant I'll be very disappointed. So in the mean time, I would love to hear your opinions. Do you think it's pregnancy or stress? Any other possibilities I might have overlooked?

TIA!

So What Happened?

Thanks mamas for the advice that I need to (but don't want to) hear! I'm 28 and haven't had any other notable changes this month (illness, weight, sleep etc etc). I'm a very rational person but I want to be pregnant so much it's hard to keep my emotions in check!

Just because of the negative home tests I don't think you're pregnant, especially since you're 2 weeks late. At least for me, the test picked up that I was pregnant right when I was late, like a couple days after. Stranger things have happened I guess. Hope you do get pregnant or are!
When I was on a new type of pill, I missed my period altogther. I thought I might be pregnant. The weird thing is that it didn't happen again. Good luck!

I'm sorry to disappoint you, but after 2 weeks, the urine test would almost surely be positive if you are pregnant. You are probably not pregnant, and just skipped because of all the stress/major changes in your life. It happens sometimes, even if it never happened to you before.

Of course it doesn't hurt to get the blood test and talk to your Ob/Gyn. But it doesn't make sense to get your hopes too high.

How old are you?
Once I hit my late 30's, I'd skip a period now and then for no reason.
Although it's not unheard of for a vasectomy to heal up over time, I think it's more likely the stress of all the changes you're going through right now.
Just because it never affected you before doesn't mean it won't start to affect you later on.
Time will tell.
Try to relax and don't build up expectations one way or the other.

About 6 months after my husband got a vasectomy I stopped having my period. I took a blood test only to confirm that I had primary ovarian failure and was going through early menopause. What a bummer.
Of course, my husband said he got a vasectomy for nothing. lol
It's probably stress related, and you don't mention your age. But as you get older, things get less predictable and regular.

If you're two weeks late and getting a negative urine test, then chances are likely that you're not pregnant. You should still get checked out by your OB, though.

There are several things that can cause you to miss a period. Stress is one. Illness can throw your body out of whack too. A change in weight, a change in schedule, peri menopause, menopause, a simple miscalculation of dates, birth control pills, too much exercise, some medications and thyroid issues...can all cause a skipped period. And my OB once told me that women often experience at least one unexplained missed period in their life...it just happens sometimes.

It sounds like you would be overjoyed at the idea of being pregnant. But in all honesty, I would not be getting too excited just yet. Between the vasectomy and negative tests, things are not really pointing in that direction. BUT stranger things have happened. Hopefully, you'll be celebrating a new bundle soon. Good luck.

Yeah, I always had clockwork periods...until I hit 30 then they went screwy. So, if the urine tests are coming back negative, then I wouldn't get your hopes up.

Lots of reason why a period can comes late, not the least is because it feels like it. :/

Even just a change in schedule, can alter cycles. Medications (even OTC ones,) illness, allergies, stress, age, spending a lot of time around other menstruating females, travel, temperature change, not eating well for a time, changes in sleep cycle, thyroid problems, iron problems, etc. There are literally dozens of simple reasons, that can alter your cycle. For the sake of your emotions, I would accept there is a simple answer, and you are not pregnant.
