Missed Misscarage and D & C

I thought I was 13 weeks pregnant this Sat. I was bleeding and went to the ER to make sure I still had a baby in there. I got the news I wasn't expecting: that I had a 7 week old fetus and no way of confirming if it was alive until I got the second blood test. While they tell me its possible I miscarried and then got preg again, I know in my heart that the timing doesn't work out and that the baby is not alive. This means the fetus has been in there about 4 weeks and I've now been bleeding for 6 days. Does anyone know if a D&C is inevitable? If I'm able to expel it naturally, will I be able to see the baby? My out of state parents are passing through for one day and two nights and I don't want to be in the hospital while they are here. How long can you delay a D&C? Thanks everyone. FYI, I'm disappointed but not devastated. I know God is in control and if its in his plans for us to have another baby it will happen.

Your Doctor should be telling you the best options.
If you expel naturally, not all the tissue may expel either and you will need to have a D&C... a D&C ensures that all the tissues are taken out. Thus, less likely hood for infection/complications later.

I had a miscarriage once, at 6 weeks. I had a D&C. It was done in the office, and I went home afterward. Then rested.
For me, I did not want to see what came out. At 6 weeks, it is not a "baby" per say... just very tiny like a gummy bear (please excuse the metaphor) but that is how my Doctor explained it to me. It will mostly look like tissue (like a heavy period)... not a discernible "baby" per say.

You need to do what is healthiest for your body... even if you expel naturally, you need to have a follow-up... to make sure all the tissue was expelled.

I would not delay a D&C if that is what you need.
For me, the procedure was like menstrual cramps. Not real painful. And it was quick.

After I had my D&C.... my Doctor recommended not trying for another baby for about 3 months, so my body could heal. After that, I did get pregnant again, fairly quickly about 6 months later, and I now have my son!

Consult with your Doctor... and see what is best. If you must be in the hospital when your Parents are here, then that is what you need to do. Unless, your Doctor can delay it until they leave. Ask your Doctor, that is the only way to decide.

All the best,
Susan

If it's purely a time thing...a D&C usually takes less than an hour, and then you're home. Feeling lousy (physically) for about a day. Miscarrying naturally can take weeks (unless you're nearing full term...and then you have a bunch of other issues we won't go into), and as others have mentioned, frequently needs a follow up D&C. Miscarrying naturally carries a lot more risk attached to it, and takes a lot longer, but some women prefer it.

I've been here, early & late. It sucks. And there's no right answer, other than the one you choose for yourself.

Best of Luck,
R

I am so sorry for your loss. I lost a baby at 12 weeks, and since I was already in process of miscarrying, I chose to try and expel naturally. However, a couple of weeks later I had surges of bleeding, and ended up needing the D&C anyway. I passed a lot, but did not see anything resembling a baby, sadly. The D&C was an in and out procedure, with minimal cramping after the fact. Based on my experience, I would opt for the D& C right away - just to avoid all of the physical and emotional pain that occured for me in between. My blessings to you and your family.

My heart goes out to you. I just had a D & C on November fourth, I too had spotting and cramps and had an ultrasound and I should have been at 9 weeks and the fetus growth was 7 weeks and no heartbeat. I had a follow up u sound to confirm. The D & C seems like the best way to go. I myself did not want to watch pieces of "Tissue" plop into the toilet and wanted the ordeal to be over with. It really was a quick procedure....whole time in hospital took 5 hours and i was home with my two year old before bedtime.

I am still a bit dizzy i think from the anesthetic and a little bleeding but nowhere near the blood that was shooting out of me prior to the d & C. I hope this helps...

If you do have to have a D&C, you will most likely go home that day. I had to get one at 20 weeks and went home the same day. Make you you have a good dr. I'm so sorry that you have to go through this. It's never easy to be told you've lost a baby at any stage.
