Hi there Mamas!
I have some questions for any of you who have experienced what I'm going through. I am at the tail end (I hope) of what was confirmed as a miscarriages. I was finishing off my first trimester and began bleeding lightly yesterday after doing some housework and it ended up going into a a full blown termination of the pregnancy by this morning. I went for an internal ultrasound earlier this morning and they confirmed the uterus is already back to regular size and that the lining is still thick confirming it was actually a 3 month pregnancy. I understand that I will continue to bleed for the next few days but here's the questions: 1) how long did you bleed when miscarrying? 2) how much cramping did you have AFTER you passed the sack and fetus? 3) if you tried getting pregnant right away how long did it take you? 4) does the doctor/midwife let you try right away after you stop bleeding? 5) how common is miscarriage, actually? (no, I don't mean stats. I mean in reality how many of you have had a pregnancy termination? 6) how many of you had more than one miscarriage and how many of you only had one? Thanks so much for all your imput. I appreciate it all. I'm feeling a little down right now but I know it wasn't meant to be for some reason or another. It's hard but it's life. Thank G-d for everything else.

So What Happened?

Thank you Ruth, Karen and Patricia for your insight and support. I would love to hear from more of you mothers out there who have had experiences losing a pregnancy. Not that I want to hear others having to feel my pain rather that it is comforting to hear women tell their stories of losing a pregnancy and then having a normal one next time around (shortly afterwards). Thanks again for everything. Your shoulders for leaning on, mouths for talking, and ears for listening. Its all very much appreciated during this difficult time.

I had one miscarriage before I had any children. I actually bled for one month before it stopped, I am not sure if that is common to bleed so long. I only cramped for one night, I think that was the night I lost the baby. We actually did get pregnant the very next month, not on purpose, but it happened! My doctor advised us to wait three months, but nature took it's course!! I know many people who have had miscarriages, I think it is very common. I know it is a hard thing to go through, but remember it must have happened for a reason! Keep your spirits high! Good luck.

I am very sorry for your loss. I think that even when we understand about miscarriages, it is still hard. Mine was over 13 years ago, so I can't remember as many details, but I will try to answer your questions the best I can. I have found it to be very, very common. After I miscarried, it seemed like everyone I knew, from my mother-in-law to many friends, had a miscarriage story to tell. I think it is one of those things that often does not get talked about, which is a shame.

I don't remember much cramping after the miscarriage. I had one child at the time, and was so sad that I didn't feel ready to try for another immediately. Most doctors recommend some wait time, mine suggested 3 periods, which for me turned into only 2 months, unusual for me but I guess my whole system was out of whack. At that point, I felt more ready to try again for another child, and got pregnant right away, my second of three children, no other miscarriages. Usually if you have had one miscarriage, there isn't much reason to worry about other pregnancies, it is so, so common. If you have multiple miscarriages the doctors will want to check you more carefully, and this is less common.

I am so sorry for what you are going through. I too just had a miscarriage. It is tough, but is very common. In the past month I know of 6 friends(and my sister) who have miscarried. Yes it definately has been a topic of conversation in our circle. So I will answe your questions to the best of my ability.
1 &2) each miscarriage is different. I didn't bleed and had to go in for a d&c immediatly. Other in our circle bleed for anywhere between 1 week and 6 weeks before. Cramping was also varied.
3) my husband and I are hoping to get pregnant really soon so our doctor said we can start trying after my first period. she wants to make sure everything is working. friends doctors said three months.
4) i think this is totally situational. So ask you midwife/dr.(i used a midwife with my first pregnancy and a Dr this time because we moved)
5&6) I know this is a stat but my dr said 33% of all pregnancies end in miscarriages. I have had friends who have had multiple miscarriages and have 2 or more children. My sister has had two and I have had one. So you never know. Testing depends on the situation and the doctor. My sister did not have test done after her first miscarriage, but my doctor ran loads of tests after my d&c. ( i will know more about the results after my checkup on thursday-I had my miscarriage on the ____@____.com weeks)

finally, hang in. It is pretty emotional and let yourself be sad for your loss. If you need to talk with someone who is going through the same thing, feel free to contact me.

I wish you the best,

M.
