Mirena Side Effects - Jacksonville,FL

I have had Mirena for about 3 years now. When I first got it, I bled heavily for a few months. The bleeding in the first few months was on and off though it seemed like it was more on than off and I thought it was never going to end. I used to joke that how the actual birth control works is by preventing you from having sex in the first place by making you bleed the whole time...lol. Now my monthly periods are very short and light although every other month or so I will have a heavier period than normal but they are still not as heavy as I was before having Mirena and it only last about 3 days. I love Mirena! It is the best birth control that I have tried and I highly recommend it! Hope this helps.

If you are worried you should always ask your doctor. For me personally I bled for about 3 weeks like a period and had heavy cramping then everything went back to normal after that. Normal periods and everything. I hope that you will check with your doctor because not everyone is the same or has the same medical history. I hope that helps.

I bleed for about a month after getting mine inserted, but when i asked my doctor about it she said that that was normal and the same thing happened to her :oD Don't worry - it will stop - if your still concerned ask your doc at your 2 week follow-up appointment :o)

I also put in the Mirena on the 8th of this month and I have not stopped spotting since. I've always heard that it is normal though, sometimes it's more and sometimes it's less it varies a lot. It is especially heavier after intercourse. Honestly I haven't asked the doctor because I've heard it's normal but you know your body and if it seems to be too much then I would call it's something new for you and I'm sure you are not the first one with questions. I had pretty heavy bleeding for 3 weeks after having mine placed, but it was worth it as I have not had a period at all since then.

I had what seemed like a two week period starting a day after it was inserted. After that I had a three day very light period a month later, another like that a month after that and then nothing for two years!

If it HURTS I'd call your doctor for sure, otherwise, I think you're probably fine. Give it another week or so.

I have had my Mirena for about 1 year, (come to think of it next week will be 1 year) I had some bad cramps my first 2 days some spotting, but not much, then some spotting about every 3 months after that, but nothing for me to have any concern about. But if you feel something is not right I'd call the doc and have him/her make sure the Mirena did not shift out of place. Best of luck to you.

I had a mirena and i had some spotting in the beginning - not heavy bleeding. I would call your doctor;s office to see if this is normal, especially if you are having cramping. Everyone reacts differently, so what one person experiences is different from another.

A food for thought... I am now pregnant with our 2nd child, 2 months after having my doctor remove the IUD. When I was researching how long it takes to conceive after using the IUD, there were a number of women who had a difficult time getting pregnant post IUD - months to over a year. So just something to think about, if you are planning on having another baby in future.

Mirena was an absolute nightmare for me...I bled constantly...heavy at first like you are talking about but then it was like every 3 or 4 days I would have a heavy period, it would disappear and return 3 to 4 days later....I always had mild cramps....I put up with that for a few months until eventually it came out on its own....Some woman swear by Mirena (like my best friend) but for me it was a nightmare. If you feel like something isn't right I would call...better safe then sorry...Sometimes the excess bleeding is just hormonal and other times it could be that the IUD was improperly placed. I had period type bleeding for the first few days but after a week it was more like spotting. I continued to spot for another 10 days or so (2-3 weeks in total) and when My doctor checked it's placement a month later I spotted after that too.
My periods have always been light, even when I went off the pill, they were never more than one heavy day with a couple of light days to follow. Maybe if your cycles are naturally heavy your spotting after insertion is heavier?
Now it has been almost 5 months and smooth sailing. Good luck. I love not having to take a pill, I know I can't screw this one up!
