Mirena IUD and Weight Gain

I think I've just put two and two together. I've had a Mirena IUD for almost 2 years and have steadily gained weight. I was always one of those lucky people who could eat whatever they wanted, not exercise, and remain thin. I have since had 1 child and turned thirty, but I am now eating better than I used to and exercising TWICE A DAY and still gaining. I didn't think metabolism can change THAT much!! After the birth of my daughter, I lost all of my baby weight plus 7 extra pounds without even trying in 2 months. Then, I got the IUD, and have chubbed up consistently since then. Has anyone experienced this??????? I want to know if this is common before I go running to my OB to have it removed.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I had so many people respond that they also had this same problem, and then i researched it on the internet and it IS pretty common--the doctors just don't tell you. You can't forget that doctors get kickbacks from drug companies, so you can never fully trust they are on your side. I'm going to get the darn thing taken out--I already made an appointment with my doc for next month. Check back in a couple of months and I'll let you know if I'm back into my old jeans!! I'm pretty sure it's not my thyroid, as some of you suggested, as it's only about 10-15lbs. That's just a lot on me, as I'm only 5' tall. Thanks, though, to everyone who responded. Hopefully it's not my metabolism slowing down with age--I guess I'll find out!

I have an IUD. I have had it for over 2 years. I do not have the mirena Iud. Mine is good for ten years. (believe that the mirena is 5 years) I have not had any weight gain with mine. ( i am 33 and it is harder to keep the weight off unless i really watch what i eat) My dr suggested the IUD b/c i would not have the weight gain that you can from the pills and the fact that I conceived my 2nd child on the pill.

Wow. Until I read this, I hadn't even thought about it but I think this is happening to me too! I've had mine for the past two years and I feel the same way. Like no matter what I try, I still have an extra 10 lbs. on me. Have you asked your OBGYN about it?

Oh no, your post made me realize I may have the same problem! Got it when baby was 8 months (Feb), was losing weight steadily, down to 132. Since the IUD, have been gaining weight steadily - last check I was 137 but I think I'm more now. Arghhh...!!! I have always been thin, both my parents are thin, so this is strange to me.

Honestly I think alot is Age.. I have spoken with several friends on weight gain and have determined it is between 28-30 that most people start putting it on and then by 30 you know it. I noticed that with that age came so many body changes. I am not pregnant with my 3rd and boy do I have some work when I am done. Good Luck. Getting older isn't always graceful.

i also have the mirena iud and have started to lose the weight. age, hormones, and stress are great factors of weight gain. i had twins in 2007 and was having the hardest time with my weight because my hormones were so out of wack and i was under alot of stress. now i can control my stress levels and have started working out again and the pounds are melting without my effort. good luck!

I had had Mirena before and had no issue with weight gain.I was actually told by my doctor that is has the very lowest percentage for weight gain also and have never known anyone with it that gained weight. But it can vary from person to person.HOWEVER even if it was the IUD that was causing some of that weight gain it prob isn't the only thing causing it.If you live as healthy as you say then it shouldn't cause you to gain that much weight.Have you ever had your thyroids checked?

I recently had the same issue with the Mirena IUD. I had it changed to the Paraguard, and the weight is starting to come off. My doctor said that the weight gain was a fairly rare reaction to the hormones in the Mirena. I hope this information helps you.

i have a mirena IUD and have had no problem with weight gain. cept this last year, I turned 31 this year and my bad eatign habits and no exercise has caught up with me. And remember when stepping on the scale muscle weighs more than fat does so when you first start exercising you will gain a bit of weight as you start to burn the fat and build muscle.

I also have the Mirena and haven't experienced any weight gain from it. Are you keeping track of your calories everyday. You might think you're eating healthy but a bite if this here and there add up. Track your calories for a week and get a "real" picture of how many calories you're eating in a day. Sometimes until you see it all written down it's hard to get a real picture.
