Mirena Experiences?

I am hoping on getting the Mirena on Thursday but I would love to hear any of your experiences good, bad, or otherwise. I am breastfeeding so I don't know if this would affect my eligebility (sp) and I am also afraid that it would lower my libido and make me gain weight...like with the pill. Any advice/experiences?

What can I do next?

I have had mine in since September and I love mine! I did have spotting like the other girls in the first month but I am in my second month and I am right on time with my period and so far no cramps and no heavy bleeding! I would recommend taking advil or motrin before you go to help with the cramps when they put it in and after but hopefully you will like it!!! I havent noticed any weight gain but I have also been on Weight Watchers to keep my weight down after I had my lil one! So far so good! I def think its worth trying! Good luck!

I loved it! I had it put in 6 weeks after my son was born. I actually just had it removed a little over a week ago b/c we're trying for #2! I had no side effects from it! I was one of the lucky ones who didn't have a period at all. For about 5 weeks after it was inserted, I had VERY light spotting off/on, then nothing. I never felt it, never had any problems! I do have a friend that had to have the string trimmed about 6 months after getting it b/c it was scratching her. But she's had no problems since.

For me, it didn't hurt to have it put in. It was uncomfortable, but not painful, and very quick. It didn't hurt at all either to have it removed. I will get it again after we have our next baby.

I hated mine. It made me very cranky and moody, and I did gain weight. I had it in for 9 months, and I with in a day or two of taking it out I felt like a new person.

Mirena did not affect my ability to breastfeed nor did it affect my desire to have sex until I felt the burning pain that accompanied it. That was enough to limit the horizontal tango to once every three months or so... extremely effective birth control. The cramping every single freaking day and complete unpredictability of my periods (3 days on, 2 days off, a day or two on, a day or two off) wasn't super either... I started cramping 2 weeks after I had it put in, and it happened 24/7 afterward. I went through labor without pain medication - I am not normally uber sensitive to pain, but it rendered me almost non functional and my doctor's office kept telling me, "Mirena doesn't cause that". Are you freaking kidding me?

I had it removed less than a year after I had it put in - the cramping stopped within two weeks, as did pain with sex, and the overall feeling of malaise that I had lived with since having it put in.

So that said - would I recommend it for anyone? Yes. A teen mom.. maybe.

I was in your same situation & I chose to go with the non-hormonal Paragard. It's just like the Mirena, but it's copper. I have had no problems with it at all & I just finished breastfeeding, it caused no weight gain or bad effect on my nursing. My OBGYN said I could choose either one & they shouldn't effect the nursing. Also she told me if my husband felt the strings to come in & she would trim them so he wouldn't feel them. (The strings are kinda like fishing line really flexible but could be pokey.) I was afraid the insertion would hurt.. but I also had no problems with that it was only slightly uncomfortable for a min.Oh & this prevents preg. for 10 yrs. instead of 5. & If works immediatley after placement & you also can get preg as soon as it's removed as with the mirena it may take a few months for your cycle to get reg. Maybe talk to your Dr. about it.

It has worked fine for me. Only sight cramping when it was put in but stoped after a few hours. None since...

I did have spotting for about six months. After sex I would spot for about a week.

My husband does say that he can feel the strings poking him and has caused him some tenderness and wounds from the continuous poking.

I am planning on him getting fixed and having it removed later.

Otherwise I have had no prob with it. Lighter periods are nice!

I've had a good experience with mine, and it's been 4 years. It took a couple months to adjust to it (some major spotting for a few weeks), but since then I rarely have a real period anymore and it hasn't caused me to gain weight or lose my libido. I was a mental nut case on the pill and I was worried that this would have the same effect, but it hasn't. It's not for everyone, but for me it's been great.

I got the Mirena IUD a year and a half ago and love it. I would say that my only complaint is that I have had some weight gain around the middle and my bust size increased. I spotted daily for the first 3 months and then spotted periodically for the next 3, so about 6 months. This aspect of the IUD was frustrating. However, for the next 9 months, I had extremely light periods that were only about 3 to 4 days in duration and required nothing but a pantyliner. Now, a year and a half into it, I haven't had any sort of period in two months. Insertion was a bit painful for me as I have a tipped uterus and I cramped for about 24 hours afterward. Once the 24 hours were past, I had no pain. I am very happy with my decision. We didn't need it for birth control as my husband has had a vasectomy. I needed it to control and lighten or diminish my periods since they had become so heavy after having two children that I was severely anemic.

I have it since May and love it! I had cramps the first day, and I have been having light periods which is awesome! Although, at the beggining I was spotting for more than 14 days and my doctor gave me some pills to regulate it and finaly stopped. I have not experience any gain weight but I have been in a diet to keep my current weight. And believe me, it will not affect your libido at all, it will only get better for you don't have to worry about getting pregnant again. I will recommend you to go to their website and ask a lot of questions to your doctor. Good luck!
