How many of you out there have suffered from these side effects of Mirena?

Depression, Fatigue, Loss of Libido, Concentration Problems, Acne

I did read the warnings before I had it inserted however, these things seem to be creeping up slowly on me and steadily getting worse. I wasn't sure if it was connected to the birth control, but as i am looking back things just got worse and worse after it went in.

As far as removal...did it hurt as bad as it went going in? I have heard of the Mirena crash...is it bad? Please advise me as I am very seriously thinking about having this thing removed!

What can I do next?

I had mine removed for all the reasons you mentioned, except take away depression and add multiple, large ovarian cysts. I would like to say my hormonal problems ended there, but I got pregnant 2 mos after removal which ended in a miscarriage at 11 weeks. I feel certain the leftovers of that device had something to do with it. The crash wasn't bad, it just takes a while to straighten out hormonally and get all cleared up.

Yes, I had all those except acne, but I had weight gain too. I had it about 1 year (I think) and I got it taken out. It did not hurt at all. I'm glad I did. Putting hormones, even the slightest amount, into your body is just not good for it.

I didn't have too many problems with the Mirena in, although I have heard a lot of ladies out there have. My periods were wildly irregular (sometimes every 2 weeks, sometimes once a month, sometimes no period for 2 months) and it was annoying to never know when to expect it. My libido did go down a lot. My skin got kindof bad. I had 10 lbs that I could not get to budge, even with exercising an hour a day and dieting.

I had it removed in November. My skin has cleared up a bit and I lost 10 lbs- but I had to work for it, it didn't just drop off on its own. I had a major "crash" that lasted a month. It started a week or 2 after removal. Extreme fatigue (napping 3+ hours a day, falling asleep when standing up!) depression, feeling on the verge of tears all the time. After a month I went back to normal. I did a lot of things to get back to normal faster: vitamins, amped up exercise, cutting out diet soda and caffeine, changing diet- I think those things helped a lot).

Getting it removed took 5 seconds and did not hurt at all and there was no cramping or bleeding afterward. I would get it out if I were you. Like I said, I didn't mind it when I had it, and I appreciated not having to remember taking BC daily, but I wouldn't do it again. It scares me to know the effects it can have on a body!

YES! I had severe depression, fatigue, loss of libido and weight gain. I gained 10 lbs in 6 months and was working out religiously. I also felt very depressed, and was a mean person as a result. My loss of libido was very real as well. It came on slowly and my husband and I had a long talk about how I had changed so much that I was almost unrecognizable to him. We traced it back to around the time I had Mirena inserted.

My doctor blew off all my concerns over side effects and tried to talk me into another, more permanant, procedure. I had Mirena removed. I didn't feel a thing. It was very quick and less uncomfortable than the insertion. She said I may bleed for a few days. I bled for a few months after having it removed. Maybe it was my body's way of cleansing itself. It took me a while for the "fog" to lift, but I would say I felt like myself again pretty quickly. However, not 100% until months later.

I would say, definately have it taken out and you will notice improvement in all those areas of concern! Good Luck!

I had weight gain, acne, bad cramps, and long painful periods. However, I had an increase in libido, but it was difficult sometimes due to the pain and string that my hubby felt! My OB/GYN told me to keep it for a while and let my body get used to it, but the symptoms got worse and worse. After a year, I had it removed, and it was great. I cramped for a day, but that's about it. And I didn't really "crash" per se, it was more like "cleansing." Mostly because my body felt better and better, my acne cleared up, and my weight started dropping.

I had similar side effects like mood swings, acne and weight gain, as well as loss of libido. My OB/GYN actually believed me when I told her I felt the side effects were getting worse the longer I had Mirena and she removed it. She told me she had heard similar stories from a few of her patients and felt like the longer you'd had it and the older you were (I'm 34) the worse those effects were.

I didn't have a crash exactly but had a few months of extremely bad periods and more difficulty than in the past adjusting to birth control pills. It was all just a really big bummer: my insurance refused to pay for the removal, I was having hot flashes, teenage like acne and pregnancy like emotions.

I've never known any doctor or nurse who say that hormone related side effects can't be related to taking hormones. MANY will recommend Mirena to people who have hormone related side effects to oral hormones, because women *tend* to have fewer side effects the lower or more local the dose. But hormone related side effects are a list of about 50 different things. Anyone can get any of them, or any combo of them, at any time.

I had *increased* sex drive, better concentration, more energy, and clearer skin on hormonal birth control... but one of the side effects of hormones is that they can trigger certain gynecological cancers. As they did with me. So even though I have a whole list of *great* benefits on hormones, the whole death thing, means I can't take them.

Well, after reading the other repsonses, and having asked some questions here recently, I'm glad to know I'm not turning into a crazy person! I will have had Mireana two years in August. I am calling my dr. tomorrow to have it removed. Over time, I have become even more irritable, apathetic, ZERO sex drive, acne, can't remember a single thing! I have not heard of the Mirena crash....sure hoping I don't experience that! Good luck, and I will post after I have mine removed!
