I have had this for about 5 1/2 months now and I like it, but I thought I would never stop having spotting just like another mom said! It is nice to be spontaneous, but I still have to wear a light pad at least once a week because of the spot bleeding. I also have terrible cramping for about 2 weeks when I had it put in. It is a good thing though, (especially when it makes the husband happy that he doesn't have to wear condoms...) I know it will even itself out soon, and it really is not that bad. I would recommend it to someone who doesn't want to deal with the pill.

I've had mine for a couple of years now. Love it. At first I felt like I was going to spot forever, but now my periods are light and almost without pain. I had been getting to the point where my period was so painful I would have at least one day where I could barely function every month. I did gain a little weight at first, but it came off a few months later on its own. I was a little nervous about the hormones and the long-term effects, but they say it's safe and the relief from having to plan my schedule around when my period would happen is wonderful!

I have been on mirena for a year now. It has been good for me. There is some break through bleeding for some people. And there is no side effects. As for insurance, they may not cover it. If you have a RX plan you may get a prescription for mail order only and save money. I paid $80 for the mirena and my doctor bill was $200 for insertion. GOOD LUCK

Hi S.,
I don't know if I am the one odd person out there, but Mirena did not work well for me at all. I am assuming that the other post today about airborn is also from you and that you are breast feeding. If this is incorrect, you may want to disregard what I have to say. Some background on me: I breast feed my son (now 3 1/2) for just over 2 years and had no supply issues with my breastmilk. Now with my daughter (now 6 months) I got the Mirena put in about 7-8 weeks after I had her and I have had some major supply issues. She is a great eater but my supply has greatly suffered throughout the 6 months. I have been working with a lactation consultant and the only thing that we can figure is different between my son and daughter while breastfeeding is the mirena. My diet is the same. A few weeks ago I started to feel like I was getting my period and my milk supply almost went completely away. I have had to give my daughter anywhere from 1-4 bottles of formula each day. I had the Mirena taken out about 3 weeks ago because of my supply issues and I am still having problems with my supply. I really don't have any idea if the mirena was the cause of my problems but I can not figure out what else it might have been. My OBGYN claims up and down that the mirena should not have made a difference. Also, sex became very uncomfortable after my daughter was born, it hurt. I didn't know what the issue was, but since I have had the mirena removed sex is back to normal and does not hurt like it was. So, I don't know if I am the abnormal person out there with a reaction, but it sure didn't work for me. I would suggest that if you want to go the IUD route try the non-hormone 10 year version and I wish I had. Or wait until you are no longer breastfeeding.
I hope this helps and whatever you decide works for you!

I currently have the Mirena IUD and love it. Certainly check your insurance options before you go with it...but, depending on how long you want to be on it, I'm pretty sure it's worth the cost compared to the pill. I love the fact that I don't have a full blown period, only very light and that is on occasion. The only con I can say is that it was a little uncomfortable going in, but it was worth it. I really love that I don't have to think about contraception on a regular basis...one and done. Love it!

Tried it and love it. I went on it about 7 weeks after I had my daughter and its been about 7 months now and I've had no problems. In fact, I haven't even had 1 period. It has been great! I would advise it, although I'll warn you that it does hurt having it put in. But after taking some tylenol, the pain was more like men. cramping, so it was really no big deal. Take the plunge, I'm glad that I did!

I tried it and it didn't work for me. I kept feeling the fishing string poking me. I had my doctor trim it as much as possible, but it didn't work. I had it removed a week later. I am very sensitive to hormones, and can't take the pill. But while I was using this, I was fine. It's a shame it didn't work out, because I loved it other than the poking.

Thanks for asking about this S.! I looking into MIRENA right now. I've been on the patch for about 5 years now. I stopped using it about 4 months ago and at my yearly checkup yesterday I asked for different alternatives. My OB gave me a pamphlet about MIRENA. We have two beautiful children and we know we don't want anymore. I was going to put a message out there to all the moms today and there was your request. Thanks! The information truly helps. This is an awesome website.

I did not care for the Mirena IUC. I take comfort in getting my period. I don't think that it is natural to skip your period for 5 years. I used it for a year and switched to the Nuvaring. It is comfortable, not as much of a hassle as the pill, and I get a period. Try Mirena. It is not for everyone, but it may work for you. If you don't like it, have it removed and try something else! Good Luck

There was another thread on this a couple months ago with a lot of good info in it- try searching for it. Also adding Mirena does NOT have a cotton string- it is the nylon type "fishing line". The cotton string is what took previous IUDs off the market because they caused infection. Not the case with Mirena.

S.-
If you are certain you are done with babies for awhile I would highly recommend the Mirena. It has to be the best thing ever, nothing to think about and even better, I no longer get a period! I have had the Mirena for exactly one year. Like a couple other ladies said though, check your insurance, it is EXPENSIVE if insurance doesn't cover it but well worth it. Insertion is a little uncomfortable but hey, you've given birth so you will be fine!
Good luck

All I can say is Love IT! I had 3 children very close together and the last thing I could think of was having another child right now. Although I am not saying I am finished, I may want one more but just not right now. A warning on it and your OB will tell you this too. If you can wait it out for 2 months it is so worth it. Everyone deals with it differently but I bled for 2 months straight. They said it would just be spotting but it was defiantly more than that. Now I never have to wear anything and really have no side effects or PMS symptoms. It is wonderful. I wish I would know for sure about the fertility after you remove it but supposedly there should be no problem. I would highly recommend it!

I have it and I LOVE IT, no more thinking about BC. I've had it for 2 years now and I still do get a period but only for a day and only every 6 weeks or so. I was at my OB today and every woman in her office has it and we were all talking about how great it was.

I got this over 6 months ago and I really love it. I couldn't take the pill or patch, but this works great for me. The insertion does hurt and I felt nauseaus but it was well worth it. Some woman have spotting and bleeding, and some have their period dissapear all together. I am that type of person. It makes me "nervous" at times, but I like the not thinking about it part. I haven't felt the string more than once. Mine is a soft cotton type string and not fishing line.
