Milk Supply Decreasing - Help!

I have been breastfeeding my 10-month old daughter since birth with no sigificant issues with my milk supply. This week, however, my milk supply has decreased significantly. I was only able to pump a total of 7 oz yesterday when I usually can pump 12 - 15 oz. My daughter has been a bit sick and on antibiotics that seem to have reduced her apetite during meal times. Any suggestions on how to get my supply back up? Thanks for you insights.

What can I do next?

Drink lots of fluids and stay cool. It's been very hot and if you don't keep hydrated, your body will give priority to perspiration to keep your core temperature cool rather than using that fluid to make milk.

It could also be time to start weaning your daughter. Continue to feed and to pump and see if your supply returns to normal levels. Don't be afraid to supplement with juice, water, or formula, but she is coming up closely on the time when she will be given the go ahead to drink 2% milk.

Cats lose their appetites when they have an upper respiratory problem because their sense of smell is so integral to their appetite. Kids are very similar in that respect. Antibiotics can give stuff a metallic taste or generally decrease the appetite.

Drinking gatorade helps to increase supply. Try to rest a lot over the weekend and drink, drink, drink. Let your baby nurse for comfort if she will. Stimulation to the breast helps.

The same thing happened with my 5th child at around 10 months. Wonderful supply and then one day it decreased and within a couple of days it was gone. It was the saddest day of my life. I even called LLL and they could not offer any advise except that sometimes it happens.

Get her to nurse as much as possible to get the supply up - a baby is better than a pump. Also, call a lactation consultant to see if they can help. They did wonders for me. You can get fenugreek pills - an herbal supplement for increasing your milk supply - at a health food store. Good luck!
