I just switched my son from breastmilk to organic soy milk instead of regular cow's milk but I'm wondering if I made the right choice, I've been hearing negattive things on soy milk and soy products, I tried,go and grow formula, rice and almond milk and he will not drink it, he loved the soy milk so I'm doing that now, any suggestions appreciated,

What can I do next?

I personally don't think soy milk has enough fat for a growing brain. I would keep trying the cow's milk.

Hi-

Actually you should never ever eat or drink soy anything. The body can not digest it. It causes migraines, bloating, irritation of the intestinal and stomach lining just to name a few. It mimics estrogen in the body and can cause cancer, early onset puberty, behavioral disorders--the list goes on and I am sure you get the idea.

You can get goat's milk which is the closest thing to breastmilk. Meyenburgers is an excellent brand sold at Trader Joe's.

www.westonprice.org has a great section on no soy. It should only be eaten in its natural form as edemame.

We do not do dairy of any kind and use organic rice milk. if you keep introducing that or the almond milk he will eventually adjust. It does take up to 3 weeks to change the tastebuds.

Pure, clean water is the best.

I hope this helps!!

I would personally avoid soy if at all possible- many of the health benefits of soy have been exagerated and the estrogens in soy are not healthy for us. Rice milk does not have the fats in it that kids need for brain development. We used rice milk with our son due to allergies so we also had to give him extra fat in the form of oils. Kids don't really need milk but they do need calcium, vitamin D and fat, and whole cow's milk is a pretty good source of all three of those things. Human milk is obviously the best source of nutrition for babies/kids.

Personally, I would rather my kid drink soy milk than cow's milk. Milk is not necessary at all though, really. Just make sure he gets plenty of fat and calcium. It doesn't have to com from his milk. Milk should not substitute for meals, it should be a supplement.

I just went through this with my 1 year old. I decided on organic whole milk. The one thing that steered me away from soy is an article I read linking soy and reproduction problems in males because of the estrogen.
I have a son, so I chose cow milk.

Good luck.

He doesn't really need milk of any kind as long as he's getting vitamin d and calcium from other sources. I've had this conversation with my ped several times because my kids don't like milk.

Unless there is an actual dairy allergy, I would not resort to "milk" from plant sources yet. Goat milk is close to human milk, make sure it is whole for the first 2 years of life. the fats received from the liquid sources are a part of the development of the myelin sheths(sp?its early) on the nerve endings. Alot of times you will see kids develop sensory issues if they didn't have appropriate fats before age 2. Also a good source of calcium is broccoli, any dark leafy green. If you decide on cow milk choose to give bgh free.

Soy is popping up as a concern due to reproductive health, and
allergen factor. Ex. my daughter kept rupturing her tympanic membrane and we had RAST testing done and found she was allergic to soy. We cut it out and she has not had an ear infection or rupture since. She is also alot less congested.

My daughter is allergic to milk, so that is why she initially refused milk formula. She ended up in the ER after one bottle of milk formula at three months old. Thank goodness she was breastfed until about 18 months. With that said, we have been on soy and (Go and Grow) soy formula since she was about 4 months old. She is almost two now. I haven't seen any health issues due to the soy. We give her the extra fat she needs through her favorite food--- avocados. I too have heard all the warnings about soy. I would only recommend buying the unsweetened soy milk. Your son may love the sweetness of the soy milk, and that is why he is less interested in others. Good luck, and of course, talk with your peditrician about what is best for your little guy.
