Milk Allergy or Lactose Issue in 4 Month Old?

Hello :) 3 weeks ago we switched our almost 4 month old to enfamil gentlease formula because of fussiness and a very bloated stomach. Exactly 1 week after that he started having very water diarrhea so he was put back on the regular enfamil. A few days after that the diarrhea was still persistent and after multiple calls to my sons pediatrician I finally just went and sat in the waiting room until they would see me. This was Monday. My son is happy and was eating well and a bit fussy but not extreme. He doesn't sleep much during the day though and had developed a rash on his bottom and cheeks. The premed said try soy and see if that clears up the diarrhea. For the first couple of days it did but now we are back to the light rash and bm's after each feeding that aren't as watery as before but not quite peanut butter like either. Is this normal on soy? The dr also suggested nutramigen next. What are their bm's supposed to be like on this type of formula? Thanks in advance!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

UPDATE: so we tried the nutramigen today per the ped's instructions and we had major water blowouts just about instantly. The ped said this may happen because we originally tried the gentlease and he said the nutram may make it worse. So we are back on soy as of tonight. While he was on the soy (prosobee) it started to thicken up but he was going about after every bottle. We tried the similac soy and it's instant mucous in the diaper so now we are trying the goodstart to see if that is any gentler. Anyone ever experienced this? Thanks so much everyone. He was breastfed until 11 weeks and I got a nasty flu bug and continued to bf but had to go on some medicine due to 104 temp and I lost my supply and could not keep up with him.

My daughter had the milk protein allergy. She had a rash on her face and head (mostly top of head)...I thought it was baby acne. Take a poopy diaper in to the doctor. We were told once we switched it could take as long as 2 weeks for the milk to be out of her system and for her to be feeling better. It wasn't quite 2 weeks, but it wasn't immediate either. Soy formula usually hardens poop (1st baby was on soy). Good luck!

take a poopy diaper to your pediatrician.

could be any number of things.

is your baby only formula fed?

rinse the baby's bum in water with a smidge of baking soda after a BM to remove the feces and neutralize acid irritation on the skin (rinse with plain water to remove any baking soda grain), and coat the skin with a generous application of petroleum jelly. if the rash persists or becomes raw and painful looking ask for a prescription of Nystatin to clear it up.

Good luck.

I had this issue with my kids. I found out much later that my kids had a gluten and casein "sensitivity"--which is actually an allergy. We have 5 different types...anyways--I would have them do a test to find out if your child has these sensitivities. It is a blood test, and many insurance companies will pay for it.

Even if they do not, it is worth it in the end! Not only can you child get dehydrated, but these sensitivities or delayed allergies can cause some really great internal damage that many people do not realize is happening. This can cause other issues down the road, as well.

I would have your child tested. I wish I had my second tested sooner, before the internal damage was done..I was glad I had my last tested, because we avoided a lot of heartache--and was able to set him on a path that helped his body accept these foods, and now he can eat almost anything in regulation....

My daughter was the same way....but a little older since was breastfed. We had to put her on nutramigen...and when she turned 1 we tried milk, goats milk, soy and then settled on rice milk because it was the only thing that worked.

The signs of her 'intolerance' was loose stools that smelled like a dairy farm (yuck!) and awful diaper rash. The rash was not only due to her stools, but her urine. As long as we stay away from milk (she does OK with small amounts of cheese) then we are good. Of course, we gave her a chocolate milk from McD yesterday and here we are today with bowel movements every hour and horrible diaper rash.

While it is not a true allergy, such as hives and anaphaxis, it is a problem that can only be solved by eliminating milk. Good luck!

You're right, he does have allergy (sensitivity) to milk and soy. If you do not take care of this ASAP he will have developmental/sensory issues later on. Get him to a DAN! doctor in your area or come to Broward to see Dr. Udell.
ALso consult with a NAET practitioner to eliminate the allergens he has for good!

We have a son with a dairy allergy and similar rash as yours although he was mostly breastfed in the beginning. He would break out in hives all over his face after getting formula, then the rash would follow in his diaper after formula or if I had dairy and then nursed. The formula we found that had no problems was Nestle GoodStart. They process the milk protein so it's easier to digest. It's expensive but cheaper than Nutramigen, which is usually given for dairy allergic infants. Children with dairy allergy often have soy allergy as well, so I'm not confident that switch would clear up the issue. My pediatrician was ill informed about the allergy issue, I finally had to see a pediatric allergy specialist to get the blood test done and get some helpful advice. Good luck!

It doesn't sound like an allergy. Allergies usually manifest themselves as hives or a rash, generally starting around the mouth and possibly spreading across the rest of the face, neck, and/or whole body. You may also see vomiting, swelling of the tongue or lips, and/or difficulty breathing. Diarrhea is generally not a sign of an allergy.

It may be an intolerance. I don't really know about that, since my son has an allergy and we haven't dealt with an intolerance.

I hope you figure it out!

Please let him eat real food-see WestonPrice- get him off manufactured food-it is such awfull stuff.
You can make formula from barley- get the pearls and cook until pink, see Weston Price for another alternative- yourson is trying to make brain cells, build a body, and needs certain things, and manufactures want to make money.
A rash is his body's way of tell you something is wrong- Weston Price, Feingold, Adele Davis, Dr. Royal Lee, the resourses are out there- and you need to study for your son's future.
best, k

I dont remeber what the bms looked like with soy its been to long. my oldest had to be on soy and my baby didnt.sounds like the rash could be yeast I had it in both of my boys my babies was extremely severe. worse than his brothers. wether it was caused by the soy I dont know both had them and only one had soy. I would take him in and get him checked for a yeast infection. I dont think the formula matters either for a yeast infection
