Hello all. I am looking for some information for a friend who suffers from TERRIBLE migraines. She had a pregnancy that ended in a 1st trimester miscarriage and experienced migraine clusters during the last few weeks she was pregnant. Anyway, she and her husband are ready to start trying again and she is looking for a new OB GYN. Can anyone recommend a doctor in the Naperville area who has experience in dealing with migraines and prenancy? Or can you offer any words of advice or encouragement? Thank you!

What can I do next?

Unfortunately, I'm looking into a new OB/GYN in Naperville myself. My neurologist is working with me during my pregnancy to try to control my migraines as much as possible. I take Phenergan at the start of a migraine with two Tylenols and it helps. Phenergan is pregnancy safe and if I have a bad migraine I can go to the ER for a daulidid (sp) shot to break it. I'm also doing some massage therapy soon to see if that will help. I can also take some Darvocet at home if needed.

I suffer from Migranes, particularly during pregnancy. I do not like taking ANYTHING for them during pregnancy, so I get regular massage therapy in conjunction with accupuncture. It works wonders. I have learned not to talk to my OB about it as they are so wrapped up in the "medicinal" way of doing things. I had a midwife with my previous pregnancies and had much more support as far as how I was treating it.

My friend suffered from bad migraines while pregnant so I will talk to her and pass on the info.I used to get them around my cycle and during pregnancy, but don't anymore. (knock on wood.) I know how painful they can be and your friend's loss is probably adding to it. If possible, maybe make some casseroles or order the family pizza, any stress relief (even just not having to make dinner) may help.

She might want to have her progesterone levels checked.

Hi E.,

I can relate to your email. I am a 60 yr. old grandmother who has had a lot of similar issues in my life, including horrendous migraines!

Three things have helped me immensely with the headaches. All are natural. The first is a matter of time. As I grew older, (out of the child-rearing years), the migraines became less often and far less painful. I know that is not real comforting, to her now. However there are things that can help. I suggest you check into Chiropractic care. That helped considerably.

MOST IMPORTANT! Are you aware of the dangers of the many common TOXIC chemicals in the home? I have found that information totally devastatingly shocking! Please allow me a chance to tell you about the wonderful, SAFE, TOXIC-FREE solutions that I have found!

Getting TOXINS out of my home has made a tremendous difference for me! My 35-year-old daughter has made the same change in her home and has found considerable relief, from her migraines, as well.

In addition, I have asthma and gasp for air every time I am in the store NEAR the TOXINS aisle! I thank God that I have found this wonderful, HEALTHY solution for myself, my family, and my home, as well as my daughter and her family!

Please reply to my email or give me a call at ###-###-#### and allow me to tell you about it. Also, check out this site: http://www.livetotalwellness.com/bevk for more information. Please do YOURSELF, your friend, and your families a favor and let me help you!
I have found a BETTER way that CAN HELP! Please let me share it with you!

Hi E.,

I had the same situation and was able to take Darvaset (sp) after the first trimester. Docs vary greatly on what is and isn't "safe". I've also had kidney stones and two surgeries while either pregnant and/or nursing and was given drugs while in the hospital that some docs would approve and some would not. Certain drugs can get through your milk and or placenta, others don't or it's so minimal the risks are very low. My migranes were terrible with both until about the 4th month of each pg. My doc recommended additional caffine (I can hear some moms out their screaming right now!) and that helped me greatly - I have two very healthy and developmentally appropriate children - your friend has to decide what is and isn't appropriate for her family and the health of her baby. Best of luck!

I suffered with multiple migraines throughout all of my pregnancies and had 2 very healthy beautiful babies. If she is prone to hormone triggered migraines (migraines that come with her period) the likelihood that she will have them throughout pregnancy is pretty high. There is however not much you can do to treat them however, because most of the migraine meds are unsafe. I had some success with bio-feedback (a form of meditation), and when they got really bad my doc perscribed a bit of vicodin, as it is tylenol based and not harmful for the baby. I don't know of any OB's in Naperville, though most OB's are (should be) fairly experienced in migraine treatment in women especially during pregnancy. She could see a neuorsurgeon, or migraine specialist as there are many treatment options out there and there are specific types of migraines which can be 90% eliminated through proper testing and treatment.

Has she had her migraines checked out by a doctor yet? Not to be a downer, but a really close friend of mine started having migraines during her first pregnancy and it turned out to be brain tumors. I won't go into details about the outcome but PLEASE encourage her to get them checked.
