Midwife/OB GYN Recommendations in St. Paul

I had a midwife I loved in Sherman Oaks, CA. Went to her for well-woman checkups, as well as for my pregnancy. Now that we're in St. Paul, I'm looking for a new partner-in-my-health practitioner -- either a midwife or a highly recommended OB/GYN. I'm 42, taking birth control pills, and aware that perimenopause and menopause are not far down the road. I want to work with someone who's conversant in both standard and alternative medical practices.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you all so much for responding! I will make a master list out of your recommendations, and then Google Map everybody to better get my bearings on where they are, relative to me. While the baby naps, of course. :)

I'm going to recommend AGAINST Dr. Kenneth Crabb at Advanced Specialty Care for Women. I saw him for my pregnancy and delivery of my son and he didn't listen to what I wanted or needed out of the delivery of my son. Also, I have been having billing issues with them since then (they continually bill the wrong insurance company, don't return phone calls, etc.). I saw the midwives at HealthEast until I found out I was having twins with my second pregnancy and thought they were fantastic. I know that they have a clinic in St. Paul, but I'm not sure where. I'd checkout their website at HealthEast.org.

Hi - welcome to MN. I,too, am a trasplant from CA (Orange County). I am 43 yrs old and a SAHM with two small children (4 & 2) and had to find a OB/GYN here. I am in the suburbs of St. Paul (Woodbury) and had a wonderful OB/GYN that delivered both of my daughters. She was just transfered to United Hospital in St. Paul and her name is Jennifer Kaufman. Very pleasant and knowleageble and easy to talk to. But, now that she is in St. Paul (only 10 miles from me, but inconvenient since I have the two little ones and have a hard time making appointments even in our area) am also in search of a new physician. If I don't get any reputable references from friends in Woodbury, I will willingly drive to St. Paul to continue seeing Dr. Kaufman. I hope this helps a little anyway. I will check the blogs to see if anyone else responds... maybe there will be a reference for me as well. Good Luck!

Stephanie Johnson delievered my daughter 7 weeks ago and I thought she was fantastic. I had never met her before (she's in the HealthEast network of midwives), but I felt very comfortable with her. I'm a first-time mom and she instantly put me at ease, and continued to do so - even through my unexpected natural (no pain relief) delivery.

I also highly, highly recommend Kerry Dixon. I see her at the woodwinds clinic but since she's in the same network of midwives, I'm sure she goes to the St. Paul clinics. I saw her regularly in my last trimester and absolutely love her. She's very attentive and excellent at building relationships, and has been a midwife for years so she knows her stuff.

Good luck!

Stephanie Johnson is an AWESOME midwife. I started seeing her when I was pregnant and she still had a private practice. She's now over at the clinic at Woodwinds in Woodbury, and I've seen her for my "well-woman" care. She is conversant in both traditional and alternative/"natural" practices. This is what I loved about her.

Hi L.,
I'm a 43 yr old WAHM of a 9-year old boy. I also live in St. Paul and I go to the Fairview Womens Clinic just over the river in Minneapolis. It's right off 94 and the Riverside exit. The womens clinic has both nurse midwives (who I see exclusively) and ob/gyn docs. It's been my primary clinic since I found out I was pregnant 10 years ago and I would wholeheartedly recommend it. I have seen all the midwives in the group and have found that they consistently take the time to understand what's going on and offer various options. It's a pretty stable group--the midwife who delivered my son is still there as are several I've seen since I first went there. Some of them also have appointment times at the Fairview clinic in Highland Park. Their Mpls phone # is ###-###-#### if you want to check it out. Good luck and welcome back to the midwest!
