Metformin and Concieving

I have a love hate relationship with Met. I normally stay in it when im not pregnant and it helps with my pcos symptoms most noteably I loose weight and have regular periods. It is very rough on my digestive system the first few weeks I am on it but the most recent time I went back on it I learned a few tricks. A cracker before the pill, a cracker after the pill and a big glass if water. It totally helped! Now as for conceiving it took me a year with my son... then I went on Met. Before ttc the next ones. I don't remember exact time frames but I was charting and checking cervical mucous and with the last one it took one month to conceive. I am pregnant again now and conceived this one the second cycle after starting the Met. Needless to say I'm a big advocate of taking Met. Good luck to you... I really do think it will work!

I have heard that acupuncture along with fertility treatments can help. And also acupuncture during the pregnancy is also very good.

I had been trying to conceive for 4 years....and am currently pregnant after 1 year of weekly acupuncture visits.

J., I must first say I am truly sorry for your loss. My heart ached reading your story. I too have been diagnosed with PCOS, although I don't know that I put a lot of validity in that diagnosis, but it does somewhat match up. My doctor says I am at the lesser spectrum because I just basically don't ovulate. Anyway, I have 2 sons and with my second son I took Metformin after 3 unsuccessful rounds of Clomid. I took Metformin for a month with birth control to tone done my ovaries from the Clomid, then I did Metformin with fertility injections and subsequently an IUI. Thankfully it was successful on the first round. I know that doesn't help much cause I did an IUI, but if you search mamasource with your topic you will find tons of success stories form Metformin alone. I have read them myself because when I try for baby #3 all I plan to do is Metformin. I think it really does help. I also have a wonderful book about PCOS and fertility that gives some other things a woman can do to help herself, mainly diet and exercise. I would be glad to give you the info on it, just drop me a note. I am out of town now or I would tell it to you. I should also warn you that Metformin is rough on your GI system, so a lot of people quit it. I hope it isn't too rough for you. I think I got used to it after a few weeks.

Are you a diabetic? Metformin is a drug for diabetes, the doctor gave it to me and i threw it in the trash, I wasn't trying to get pregnant of course, it's a drug. J. L

I was on Met when we were trying to concieve my second baby. I was on it for one month and got pregnant . My daughter just turned 2 last Saturday. I also tried acupuncture while on Met. I am not sure if it helped to concieve, but it is supposed to help with infertility issues. I also prayed a lot. I am so sorry for your loss. I hope this helps. Take care.

I'm so sorry for your loss. I had really wacky cycles after the birth of my first child and then had a miscarriage- making my cycles even worse. My OB put me on metformin 1500mg a day and I got pregnant with my second son within 2 months of being on it! I just started metformin again (been on it for about 3 weeks now) b/c we're trying for #3- I'm hoping it'll work just as quickly as it did last time :) Good luck and I'll be praying for you!

I'm so sorry for your loss. I also have PCOS and was taking Metformin while TTC. Definitely gradually work your way up on the dosage like you are planning, and you might even do each dose for longer than a week if necessary, b/c the digestive/intestinal side effects can be awful. After two months on met, I was having regular ovulatory cycles again. So that was great. I have a couple of friends who also took met when TTC, and they both now have two kids each. I believe that with each of the pregnancies, they were on it for a few months each when they conceived.

Unfortunately for us, we discovered that we also have male factors issues, so my ob/gyn sent us to a RE. We were advised to pursue IVF. While undergoing the treatments, my RE wanted me to continue on the Metformin, in addition to the IVF drugs b/c it helps egg quality in PCOS women. I'm currently 20 weeks pregnant with a baby boy!!!

I wanted to let you know that low carb dieting also helps with PCOS. Do a google search on low carb diet fertility and you'll see the evidence is out there. PCOS/insulin resistance and the like wreak havoc on the ovaries so emliminating most carbs that your body converts to sugar, will help this. It would be like doing the Atkins diet in the first stage. You may want to consider it in addition to the Metformin to give your body a boost. And keep taking your prenatals. Your last baby/pregnancy was probably h*** o* your body. (((((((hugs))))))))))
